Peter Gabriel - Red Rain

The official Red Rain video. Directed by Matt Mahurin.
The opening track of Peter's fifth studio album and the first one to have a proper title: So was a watershed release in his career. Its marriage of the artistic and the commercial made for an indisputable success, with the album quickly sitting atop the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
Aside from some intriguing collaborations - with Laurie Anderson on This Is The Picture, Kate Bush on Don’t Give Up and Youssou N’Dour on In Your Eyes - it was the unity of singer, band and producer that made So such a crucial record in the Gabriel canon.

Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
I am standing up at the water's edge in my dream
I cannot make a single sound as you scream
it can't be that cold, the ground is still warm to touch
(Hay ay ay we touch)
This place is so quiet sensing that storm
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
Well I've seen them buried in a sheltered place in this town
They tell you that this rain can sting, and look down
There is no blood around
See no sign of pain
Hay ay ay no pain
Seeing no red at all, see no rain
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
Red rain
Putting the pressure on much harder now
To return again and again
Just let the red rain splash you
Let the rain fall on your skin
I come to you defences down
With the trust of a child
Red rain coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
And I can't watch anymore
No more denial
It's so hard to lay down in all of this
Red rain coming down
Red rain is pouring down
Red rain is coming down all over me
I see it
Red rain coming down
Red rain is pouring down
Red rain is coming down all over me
I'm bathing in
Red rain coming down
Red rain is coming down
Red rain is coming down all over me
I'm begging you
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Over me in the red red sea
Over me, over me, red rain

This song takes me back to tough times in high school. I remember I was coming home from work, and I was crying my eyes out , and my parents were getting divorced, and this song came on, and I just sat in my car and cried and cried. The next day I went out and bought the cassette. I must've listened to it a million times. The bridge is so powerful and haunting as well.. ❤❤❤

So many 80s songs like this had texture, depth, creativity, and an ethereal quality that has never been reproduced in any other generation They created an atmosphere of darkness, mystery, comfort, and warmth all at once, all of them were so unique, the recording techniques, sound, and production of 80s songs were superior imo and still stand the test of time So many songs touched the heart and stirred emotions in a way no other musical generation has imo, what a special decade in music history, I really miss this time

August of 1991, New York State, a fairgrounds somewhere. The first Lollapalooza. The stage hands had just finished setting up for Jane’s Addiction, and out of nowhere it started pouring. A quick thinker in the back took out the tape that was playing through the speakers and put on this song. Almost ten thousand freaks and geeks, goths and punks, skaters and surfers, hardcores and hippies - and everyone in between - started singing and dancing to this song. Tell me about it...this song helped me get through 2019, a year of a rollercoaster of emotions for me. January: started dating for the first time ever March: first professional recording sessions with my band June: discovering ASMR for the first time which helped me through a lot of my struggles with anxiety July-August: got my first job ever, working part time at a grocery store September: nastiest breakup with that same person who I started dating that Jan. Was so emotional as it was my first ever relationship. That hurt so much, being a sensitive person. December: quit my first job thinking I can find another job soon, then COVID would hit three months later. 0:05 The soft, twinkly keyboard notes, synth swells and Stewart Copeland's hi-hat work serve as a reminder of the good times, whilst knowing you're entering the next stage of your journey. 0:21 Tony Levin's bass slide down just adds to the dramatic emotional aspect of the song for me, acknowledging built up anger and frustration. 0:30 The drum fill which marks Gabriel's entrance with the vocals and piano chords is a release of all of that pain. Emotional songs say so much. I totally relate to how you think this is so emotional...

  • @laudibus1

Peter Gabriel's song is an existential and spiritual allegory that explores the heartache and suffering that people experience throughout their lives. The red rain symbolizes the pain and trials that each individual endures in their lives, and the chorus speaks of the inevitability of that pain - it is coming down and there is nothing you can do to stop it. In the stanzas, the narrator stands on the edge of the "water" of this pain, unable to interact or do anything other than feel its power, like a storm that cannot be stopped or denied. The bridge is then about the letter actually finding the strength to face the rain and accept it, to understand that it is part of life and to trust it like a child. The final chorus prays for strength and acceptance in these times so that the narrator can emerge on the other side of the ordeal. It is an emotional and powerful track that addresses the dark side of life and encourages the listener to have hope and be resilient in the face of adversity. The song is a combination of multiple inspirations. The lyrics directly reference a recurring dream Gabriel had in which he was swimming in his backyard pool and drinking cold red wine. In another version of the dream, bottles shaped like people were seen falling off a cliff. Inside, a stream of red liquid oozed from the human-shaped bottles as they hit the ground upon impact, and was usually followed by a heavy downpour of the same red liquid. At the beginning of his solo career, Gabriel had an idea for a film that he called “Mozo.” In it, the villagers were punished for their sins with blood-red rain. “Red Rain” was supposed to be the theme song. This idea was eventually scrapped, although Mozo was mentioned in the song "On the Air" in Peter Gabriel (1978). “Down the Dolce Vita”, “Here Comes the Flood” and “Exposure” also refer to the Mozo story. The heavily percussive song features two notable American drummers: Police's Stewart Copeland played the hi-hat for the rain-like background sound and was requested by Gabriel due to his mastery of the instrument, while the rest of the drumming was provided by Gabriel's regular drummer Jerry Marotta. A very well done pop song. It has a fantastic sound density and lots of sound collages...! Truly great from Sir Peter Gabriel. One of the best musicians.

Gabriel explained to Mojo magazine September 2013: "'Red Rain' was written after a dream I'd had about the sea being parted by two walls. There were these glass-like figures that would screw themselves into each wall, fill up with red blood and then be lowered across the sand, as it were to the next wall, where they'd unload the blood on the other side. I used to have these extremely vivid dreams that scared the hell out of me." Gabriel explained: "If feelings of pain do not get brought out, not only do they fester and grow stronger but they manifest themselves in the external world." Hi-hat cymbals played by Stewart Copeland were combined with a Linn drum machine programmed by Chris Hughes to form a backing rhythm that simulates rain. Other personnel on the track are: Daniel Lanois - guitar David Rhodes - guitar, backing vocals Tony Levin - bass Jerry Marotta - drums Gabriel added piano and two different synthesizers: a Fairlight CMI and Prophet 5. At one point, Gabriel wanted this song to tell the story of Mozo, a character he developed who alters the lives of those he encounters - a very prog rock concept akin to his work in Genesis. Gabriel envisioned a movie or play based on the Mozo character, but it never happened. This was used in the TV series Miami Vice ("Stone's War" - 1986) and CSI: NY ("Dead Inside" - 2008). Daniel Lanois also co-produced the album with Gabriel. The pair had worked together on the soundtrack to the 1984 film Birdy, starring Nicolas Cage and Matthew Modine. After So wrapped, Lanois moved on to co-produce U2's hit album The Joshua Tree.

I’m not sure there is a better produced song than this. The way everything comes together in a perfect storm, the crashing and splashing of drums with the rumbling of the bass, the cloudy synths and piano, with his increasingly desperate and throaty voice, is just stunning. Ive listened to this song about 1000 times and always get lost in it and find a new detail every time. Daniel Lanois knocked this one out of the park.

June 30th, 1986. My best friend, Jeff, RIP, and I were in Cincinnati to see the Grateful Dead. We had scored some LSD in the parking lot, and gone inside the ampitheater to wait for the show to start. It was a beautiful, sunny day. As I laid down on the grass, enjoying the sunshine, this music began playing on the PA system. I remember thinking, " cool, this must be Peter Gabriel's new album, coming out today. What a treat. It just doesn't get better than this!" Still an awesome memory to this day.

If you've never been around a grenade or bomb when it goes off (your very lucky) its the only thing that comes close to what I felt I was dead center sec 106 seat 10 and POW! You listen today and his soundscape, themes, expression are just as full, rich, and present as they were then. There is no defining or categorizing his music, it's not {rock}, it is not {symphonic}, it is not...it is him, iconoclastic.

This album was released in the 80s. I saw it in Houston when I was 19, now I'm 55. It will forever be in the top 5 of my favorite concerts. I've seen so so many Hall Of Fame bands. Best part of being 55 lol. It was 1986 when I saw him. Maybe 87? Epic and unforgettable. I love Peter!!! ❤️

Man , I am lost for freaking words , when it comes to this man , he is beyond a musical genius. I am 34 and really grew up in the 90's , he is still awesome to me. A fantastic voice and a beautiful but sad song , LOVE IT SO !

Lying on the bed, eyes closed ,listening with ear phones on at full volume, blasting my ear drums out, is the only way to listen to this song. Been doing this since 1986.

This album was huge for me. I've loved it every since it was released. It is my favorite PG album ever, followed by Us. King Edward Van Halen famously stated this was the last commercial CD he ever bought. Speaking to Classic Rock in January 2022, Eddie’s son Wolfgang revealed that So held a special place in his father’s heart and that the song ‘Red Rain’ meant a lot to both of them. He said: “This is one of my favourite albums because it was one of my father’s favourite albums of all time. So I’ll never forget him coming up to me one night with these huge headphones and going, ‘Wolf, put these on.’ Then he put the headphones on my head and cranked the first song, ‘Red Rain’. It’s very hard to listen to now that my father is gone. But that album front to back is Peter Gabriel at his finest.”

Peter Gabriel's voice is perfect, no one can convey bleakness quite like him. The video helps convey the song theme too, refreshing( this didn't always happen). Great job.

Incredible artist. Profoundly talented and endlessly inventive. ✨️ A gifted storyteller, too. He performed this song during his _Secret World_ tour in 1993. I was so blessed to be taken to see him in London by a man I'd just fallen in love with, and who made me his wife a few years later. ❤ He loved _Genesis_ and introduced me to Gabriel's work. We still love it (and each other) - Peter's music and his amazing artistry. His concerts are legendary. An enlivening feast for the senses. 🤩🎶 🙏🏻 *Thank you* to everyone who has shared a story here of how this evocative song impacted their life. So many different experiences. Joy, devastating heartbreak, love. Humans are so beautiful. I wish we could all see that in _Us._
