Yes, this song has saved lives. Maybe mine at some point. But I only get that lump in my throat with Kate. Soft spot for Paula though, she’s so sweet

You know, the odd thing is, Joy Division did too. It’s comforting to know someone else is down there with you. Ian was. Not uplifting like this song, but just acknowledging the hurt. Strange how that works

including that of Elton John, who was struggling in the early 90s with alcoholism. This song, he says, helped make him persevere and fight the urge to drink.

The lines Paula sings are the words of encouragment that Peter's first wife (Jill) would say to him when he was feeling low.

From Wikipedia. The song was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty-stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. Actor Matthew Perry (who struggled with substance and alcohol addiction) was enamored with the song; it was played at his funeral in November 2023 and was referenced in signed copies of his autobiography Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which was released a year before his death. Of the song, Perry said in an interview, "It was so cool and I love that. I've been writing it when I sign the book. I always put 'Don't give up' because you shouldn't give up."

I understand Peter saw the famous black-and-white photos of American families struggling to survive the US Dust Bowl and Depression and was inspired to write this magnificent song.

This duet has also been sung by Peter Gabriel with Kate Bush. I believe you have one or two reviews of her songs. Their video of this tune is very effective and stylish. You might check it out later.

During this tour, I guess it must have been, (around the same time anyways) they visited a radio station in Oslo. Artists that visited one of the shows were asked if they wanted to make a quick painting for charity while in the studio. I bought Paula Coles little painting 😊. Still have it in my office.

Love your reactions. My favorite artists of all time are Peter Gabriel and now Ren! See my name lol. So happy to see you guys enjoying them both. I’ve seen Peter Gabriel live 9 times and can only hope to see Ren live as well. This version of Don’t Give Up is beautiful, but you should also watch Peter with Kate Bush doing the same song. It’s very moving!

Thanks 👍, great, actually you don't have to say anything; this song gives me goosebumps for the 100th or 1000th time, a life and relationship maxim. The whole concert is unique because it is musically diverse; Peter Gabriel is at his vocal peak. In an opening comment you said "Woman In The Man..."; I immediately thought of the song Blood Of Eden from the same concert, maybe for later; you'll definitely love it. Someone suggested the faster "african" song Shakin' The Tree as a change, another concert highlight. Yes, of course there is, for example, the incredible political story like Biko, a song from a previous concert; certain facts must not be forgotten in life, otherwise people will unfortunately repeat stupid things.✌

Great reaction!! Absolutely no disrespect to Paula Cole, she does a WONDERFUL job with this song, but the original, album version with Kate Bush is the definitive (for me) - there's something about the emotion in both their voices that touches me deeper (the video is also perfectly done! You might want to check it) Having said that, this is a superb live version!! Yes, every man, every person, needs someone in their life that can pick them up when they are at their lowest! I know I have it in my wife (and she said these very words one day when I lost my job!) He's not just at his lowest, if you check the lyrics, he's practically suicidal ("Got to walk out of here, I can't take anymore. Going to stand on that bridge, keep my eyes down below. Whatever may come, whatever may go, that river's flowing") Don't ever give up!!! Cheers.

Peter has written so many songs that have strong meanings and messages I would recommend Games Without Frontiers, Here Comes The Flood and the sensational song called Biko about the killing of Steve Biko in police custody in South Africa during the aparthide years so moving another one thay is good live I saw Peter Live a couple of times and he often saves Biko until the last song and the whole crowd sang along with tears in our eyes, simply stunning.

you must react to the original don't give up music video with the amazing Kate Bush which came out in 1986 and is far superior than this version. Also may I add that Kate Bush in her own right was and still is a fantastic british artist my favourite music video of hers is cloudbusting with the canadian actor Donald Sutherland please if you can react to both of these songs.👍

I would like to offer a bit of advice here, and a warning of sorts. Me, an absolute nitwit. Been through it with my then gf. You don’t know her or me so no privacy issues. If someone complains, don’t just say ‘Cheer up!’ She heard voices in her head and felt threatened. I could only help her because I took her seriously and treated the voices as real. They were to her. If you don’t do that, you might cause harm. We later learned that it was caused by some awkward medication, but at the time we didn’t know. She thought she was going truly mad. Point is, don’t discard complaints as not being important. They’re real

Kate Bush and Paula Cole are both great vocalists, but they have different styles and training, so their performances will obviously be different. I happen to love this performance by Paula because the way she varies her delivery, from softer, more airy vocals with more use of head voice in the first verse/chorus to the use of more power and chest voice during the remaining song...while maintaining perfect pitch during a live concert in a huge venue. FYI, she also has a degree in jazz vocal performance from Berklee College of Music in Boston.
