Growing up in 70s, Columbo was a must watch , great TV
I'm 76 and I have seen every episode of Columbo, at least. 5 to 8 times...
I went home for the holidays and my father (70yrs old) and I took a trip to Walmart because he was keeping his eye out for ANY season of Columbo. He would speak of it fondly. He ended up finding the whole box set for only $50 and I showed up in the electronics section to see a sneaky grin on his face, he was so pleased with himself! SO, over the Christmas holidays and New Years we would watch an episode or two a night before bed; My Dad and Mum and I. It was one of the coziest, loveliest times of my life. At 34 years of age with my parents. I will treasure it forever.

Nice comment but if he actually did it, that would have been overdoing the show. Peter Falk was a man of moderation. He used to do small jokes, small talks always in moderation. That's actually one of the reasons I like him so much. So here in this Johnny Carson show, he knew how long he should do the show. Not too little not too much.
Peter Falk was a real gem.

You are so right. Johnny Carson was the best late night talk show host ever. I use to love when Carson would have on Rodney Dangerfield. After his comic routine Rodney would sit down and then just continue his routine, and Carson would let him go on and on. "I tell ya Johnny, with my wife I got no sex life ya know. She cut me down to once a month. I mean I'm lucky, I know two guys she cut out completely"
Columbo is the best of all detective shows. My all time favorite. The best use of celebrity guest appearances ever. Unique in its approach. You witness the crime then see it solved.
I've always loved him. I've seen him in comedies and serious movie's . He was always brilliant in them. His timing , deliverance , and his facial expressions and that voice . He truly was original and unique . All around a great actor. There's no one like him.
Both Peter Falk and Johnny Carson were hilarious in this video. I loved it when Peter takes 2 rolls of film out of his pocket when he said that he brought some film. Lol.
Colombo and Peter Falk are my favorites of all time ! Very charismatic person-he was extraordinarily popular-and still is.

As someone who is probably much younger than the average Columbo fan, the show made me really understand where boomers were coming from when they lamented the decline of American culture. The 70s episodes are pure class, the later reboots are offputtingly trashy and pulpy. I think it has everything to do with the precipitous decline in the level of dignity Americans experienced in their day to day lives as the new deal was eviscerated by politicians who had been captured by corporate interests. Everything, not just the tv shows, lost the deeply imbued sense of dignity, integrity, and inherent value as people's economic lives slowly, sometimes not so slowly came crashing down around them. The same systems and institutions that were once upheld as pillars of a functional society were reduced to absolute mockeries of their former selves as their legitimacy became eroded by cynical bourgeois interests seeping in and deconstructing them. All that to say, if the society you live in, the world around you, the institutions you're supposed to rely on to protect you, have no respect for you and are totally uninterested in providing a dignified life for their citizens- How are you supposed to take the mere CONCEPT of dignity seriously? You couldn't make a show like Columbo today, because the America he lived in and the America we live in are two entirely different universes. All because the capitalist cartels that control every aspect of our society need to make the line go up more. The sheer reach of the knock-on effects created by that sad fact never ceases to astound me.
@shaunbeer7367

I'm totally impressed that he stayed in character in his clothes. That shows that he understands that everybody identifies with him that way. And that's where hisbread is buttered.

Johnny was truly the best 🌃 time host, Peter Falks character of Columbo I think showed how a police drama could be done without chase.scenes, violent shootings, etc. The way he would start to follow up on his hunches of someone in particular in each episode was just very good to excellent Screen writing , and some of the best TV Dramas ever done.

I'm old school. The 2 greatest crime-related programs ever on television were Columbo and Perry Mason. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. The shows were polar opposites. Reminds me of some Laurel and Hardy scenes. While they're working on a roof, you see a glass greenhouse below. You just know that greenhouse won't be intact for much longer. Or when they're on a boating lake. You just know everyone's going to end up in the water. Sorry - this is meant to be about Columbo, but I wanted to mention L & H.
