He has to. Everyone is ignoring thatr fact. He cannot be taken off the ballot is a lot of states. CA, for example, can only take him off if he dies or they change the law, and they don't have the votes to change the law. If he steps down to another candidate, they lose CA and that, most certainly, cannot happen.
