I loved his interpretation of the Doctor. Matt Smith's Doctor came across as a young lost boy running about but you could tell at his heart he was this ancient burdened soul. Peter's Doctor was an ancient burdened soul, but you could tell at his heart, he was a lost little boy who'd run away. They were perfect compliments to each other's Doctors.

Yeah, I loved the contrast. It works even better when you think about it in context. 10 regenerated knowing his next was his last and wanted to make the most of it. 11 regenerated finally having accepted what he did during the timewar. Like Vastra said I feel like 11 really wanted the Universe to like him. He felt like he needed to be forgiven for his actions, but when he regenerated into 12 he knew that wasn’t necessary anymore and he could be his true self. There was also the added effect that 11 lived among one people (who weren’t immortal) for far too long (800+ years) and obviously saw many of them die over and over. That may have it harder than the time war in some ways and he wanted a colder exterior to act indifferent towards that kinda stuff. And just as a fun fact Matt Smith was the *youngest* actor to play Doctor Who and Peter Capaldi is the *oldest* (by technicality. In the 50th he was the same age as Hartnell when he started, but in deep breath when his run actually began he was 1 year older).

This is just my opinion. The 12th Doctor was the best Doctor of them all. He was the perfect curmudgeon w/a heart of gold. I never liked Tennant. I called him "The Snogger Doctor". If it moved, he snogged it. Plus, he was incredibly vain, conceited and probably the cruelest of the Doctors. Matt was a breath of fresh air. His Tardis Desktop left a lot to be desired but it got really nice after the NY episode. I never got the idea of romance between Matt's Doctor & Clara. The head kisses & hugs didn't mean anything as he also kissed Strax in the Snowmen episode. I felt it was more of a big brother/little sister relationship. Even my older brother would give me a kiss on the head whenever. Even though it was announced over and over that there'd be no romance at all between 12 & Clara, to quote the bard, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Except not a lady, it was Peter who kept saying. The problem was they were just so simpatico. I do not think they had to work very hard at all to show they were soulmates. I believe that the Doctor "knows things" about the companions he takes on but chooses to ignore the knowledge in the hopes of a different outcome which explains the wistful looks you'd see him make at Clara. It is also why he was trying to squeeze in every bit of fun he could with her from series 9. But only a man seeing the woman he loved about to die would he threaten to destroy the universe for her to stay with him. Only a desperate man would break his own vows to bring her back to life. When I asked my husband about it to get a male viewpoint, he said, "A man would only do the crazy stuff the Doctor did because he was scared crapless that he would spend even a day without her by his side. He spent billions of years hitting that crystal thing to break thru to the Tardis. He didn't do it to rescue his ride, he did it to rescue her. It's plain to see how he feels." That was from my sweet, but not overly romantic husband. I guess the "No romance" idea was thrown out the Tardis doors by Series 9. As I said, my opinion only.

For people who are annoyed at Conan calling him Doctor Who instead of just the doctor, this goes all they way back to 1963 when he was called Doctor Who, it was both a question and his name. Look back and you will see through the 60s, 70s and 80s he was billed as Doctor Who not just the doctor.

+John King Well, although he was listed as Doctor Who in the old series credits, the character has never actually been called that within the show itself: he's always just been "The Doctor." Not to mention that we know he also has a real name he keeps secret, and it is most likely not Doctor Who. So I can see both sides. Personally, it bugs me when people call the character "Doctor Who" because that's not what I think of as his name, but I wouldn't necessarily say either argument is wrong -- there's justification for both.

+Schuyler From the Doctor Who wikia: "DOCTOR WHO" For a further in-universe reference of the Doctor's name, please see the "Doctor Who?" running joke. The use of the name "Doctor Who" when referring to the Doctor is disapproved of by some fans, but is commonplace in the British media, the end credits of many episodes, and most prose and comic stories of the 1960s and 1970s. Indeed, the ending credits for the series gave his name as "Doctor Who" or "Dr. Who", from 1963 until Logopolis part four, when incoming Doctor Peter Davison insisted upon a change in the credits of Castrovalva to "the Doctor". This remained in place through the end of the original series in 1989. Executive Producer Russell T Davies used "Doctor Who" when the series returned in 2005, but Tenth Doctor actor David Tennant asked to change it back to "the Doctor" beginning with The Christmas Invasion. Throughout the franchise's history it has been common for media and cast members to refer to the character as "Dr. Who". In fact, even Peter Davison and David Tennant have called the character "Doctor Who" in several different interviews. In the series, only one character, WOTAN in 1966's The War Machines, has ever directly referred to him by this name. In the 2005 episode Rose, a website called "Who is Doctor Who?" is introduced, though the name is presented as a question put forward by a conspiracy theorist and no one actually uses the name in dialogue. A line of dialogue written for TV: The Empty Child, but cut, would have had the Doctor himself use the name as part of a joke involving Star Trek (after being hailed as Mr. Spock by Rose, the Doctor was to have muttered, "I'd rather be Dr Who than Star Trek"). Other media, 1960s and early 1970s Doctor Who annuals, comics and Target Books (most notably the Doctor Who and the Zarbi, not technically a Target Books novelisation, but reprinted by them) have called the Doctor "Doctor Who". Even then, dialogue between characters usually referred to him as "the Doctor".

Robert Jackson I am aware of the reasoning and history for calling him "Doctor Who" -- you'll notice I ended my comment by admitting both arguments could be justified. I just wanted to explain how the name "Dr Who" sounds weird and wrong to *me*, because the character, within the canon of the show itself, to my knowledge has always been known simply as "The Doctor" and so that's the only name I can associate with him. (I don't personally consider credits as true canon, and since the name in the credits hasn't stayed consistent throughout the entire show, I've never seen it as a solid argument either way. The canonical relevance of comics and such is also something that can be argued both for and against, but that's a whole other debate for another day. :P) However, I've had one too many heated debates on the topic already to still get worked up over which name people choose to use. As far as I'm concerned anymore, although "The Doctor" has always been the only right name to me, both are acceptable, correct ways to refer to the character. Heck, people can insist on calling him "That weird Gallifreyan dude" for all I care. ;)

The Doctor cautiously peers out of the Tardis doors, wary of his new destination. His gaze casts upon an unkempt room where the floor was more cables than carpet - nary a soul in sight. The nearest wall was lined with countless monitors that glowed with a variety of a seemingly mundane cast of shows, as the cacophony of clashing melodies vied for his attention. The only signs of life in this bitterly cold room. 𝐵𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑙𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑑? A sense of Deja Vu pulls him out of reality as memories of his time at Satellite 5 and the 'mighty' Jagrafess dance before him. And in one swift and graceful motion, he slams the doors shut. "F*** this sh*t. I'm out!"

Critically acclaimed? Its probably because its only reached outside of the UK in the past 3-4 years. If the RTD era reached the USA when it was on air, THAT would be critically acclaimed. Because the USA haven’t experienced it from the very beginning, and haven’t followed those seasons weekly- Its hard to compete with a hype like those seasons... and easy to imagine why they would say 8-9 are highly rated, because the 9th doctor and 10th doctor are seen as old seasons. Plus the fact that the reason that the series went international was because the writers made it a lot more American tv show style and it sort of lost its campiness and quirkiness that made it very British and Doctor Who

Oh my god, he wrote to the BBC and someone wrote back? The audience's reaction was right, that's just cute as hell. I cannot even imagine how that man feels now, I envy him so damn much. That adds so much humanity to it, I love it. Makes me sad how I know people who hate Capaldi's doctor because they think his morals are skewed and he's an asshole. Uhm... that's called character writing, they have flaws. And also the assholishness is funny (though he is unnecessarily harsh in Season 8 but I feel that that season was written badly as a whole. Fuckin Clara.) Overall awesome interview, but god that was such cheap special effects XD

He talks about it as well in an edition of The Graham Norton Show in the UK. It's hilarious because the letter he sent as well as the reply are read back by Norton and Capaldi is seen to be cringing enormously. He takes it all of course in good humour as he should be you can still feel his embarrassment.

To be fair, the point of Hell Bent was the Doctor goes off the deep end and basically turns evil. (I personally think it's hilarious that he's so worried about going too far but actually can't be evil for more than a few hours, which broke his record of thirty minutes.)

Katie To me too much of Russell T Davies' writing seemed totally random to me. The plots were just randomly put together and ended not because it is what would have rationally happened in that situation, but because. Many episodes felt like "OMG PROBLEMS PROBLEMS, OMG EVERYTHING IS DONE, NO HOPE, THE DOCTOR CAN'T DO SHIT!" Then Davis thought "Ok shit I cant think of a rational ending, LET THE DOCTOR SAVE EVERYTHING JUST BECAUSE!"

Amy and Rory's death was the laziest departure the show has ever had. On the bright side series 8 was decent, seems like he's changed the writing up a bit.

You guys are fucking ridiculous. Who fucking cares if Matt Smith or Tennant are not doing DW anymore. That's where the beauty of it lies, that changes may hurt but they are neccessary. By no means the writing has been atrocious, in fact it is considerably better than most crap we saw during the RTD years and Rose was fucking terrible by the end. If you want to idealize your favorite Doctors, do so, but then I think it speaks volumes of a fanbase who keeps asking Moffat about Capaldi's replacement and if it is going to be a woman when he has just begun his run as the Doctor. That's annoying and incredibly rude. Yes, there needs to be a POC or a woman Doctor, but honestly, first let the fucking man live hs dream. He grew up with DW and clearly loves it, and it is a shame we have to have people spoiling it by asking Moffat such questions. Ask the questions you would've asked Smith or Tennant.

It brings a tear to my eye seeing Peter as the Doctor. He loved Doctor Who as a kid and was even part of the fan club. Now he gets to be the doctor. FNVEIVMWCD

He's not Doctor Who. He's THE DOCTOR. It's embarrassing that he calls himself "Doctor Who"....

+liz h Those who have grown up with or watched the Classic series will commonly refer to him as "Doctor Who" because this is what he was credited as and what everyone called him ... including the actors that played the Doctor. Considering Peter himself grew up in that era with that series I think it's only fitting!

"You're playing Doctor Who". No Conan, he plays the Doctor. Doctor Who is the name of the show. Nerd tantrum is over.

Danny Ganelin Danny Ganelin well Conan probably grew up with the first generation of Doctors Who, when they were actually called Dr Who. Peter also referred to himself as Dr Who a couple of times haha. Check out the first few Doctors. Only until the 5th Doctor (I think) did he start calling himself the Doctor. Maybe do more research before having a nerd tantrum haha

Your nerd tantrum is unfounded. He is Doctor Who, as named in the credits of the very first episode, starring William Hartnell. We are now just used to calling him "The Doctor" but he is and always shall be Doctor Who.
