PETER BERNSTEIN on OPEN-STRING COLORS and the MAJESTY of MONK
This is my full-length interview with Peter Bernstein, from December 2021. I originally posted just this excerpt: • PETER BERNSTEIN on APP... . The audio quality isn't particularly good here - sorry - but Peter's wisdom is well worth leaning into.
0:00 Introduction
0:30 Playing with other guitarists
3:45 Playing the music of Thelonious Monk
10:02 Incorporating open strings
11:03 "Lush Life"
20:02 Playing in different keys
22:44 Gene Bertoncini
26:42 Playing horizontally along the fretboard
28:58 Playing solo guitar
38:52 What attracts you to a particular song?
40:45 It's not about having more stuff to play
Peter Bernstein (www.peterbernsteinmusic.com/) is an outstanding jazz guitarist. His approach is deeply rooted in the tradition, yet highly personal. He has co-led a trio with organist Larry Goldings and drummer BIll Stewart for many years, and he has led his own trio as well. (His wonderful trio session of Thelonious Monk's music is out of print - though you can hear it on KZread: • Peter Bernstein - "Mon... ) Bernstein also pairs frequently with other great guitarists, including Steve Cárdenas and Pasquale Grosso.

I saw Peter's quartet at the Village Vanguard two weeks ago. Really - there's no one like him.

Good interview. The sound does, indeed, need some tweaking.
Iv'e hidden so much by utilizing resolution. implied phrases etc'. cause these hands are indeed old, only way to keep up with you great guys,
