Peter Alliss | Five Of The Best Commentary Moments
Спорт
5 of the best commentary moments from Peter Alliss.
Known to generations of sports fans as the 'voice of golf', Alliss commentated on major championships over many years having first taken up the microphone for the BBC at The Open at Royal Birkdale in 1961, a Championship in which he also played.
A long and successful broadcasting career blossomed for Alliss and he became renowned not only for his deep knowledge and insight into golf but also his dry wit and humorous, often self-deprecating anecdotes from his many years in the game.

For me John Cleese summed it up. "If the end of the world was imminent, I could cope with that as long as Peter Alliss was commentating"!

Delighted to find this. The best commentator ever. Shame on the BBC for never giving him the tribute he so richly deserved.

Out of the countless brilliant quotes from Peter Alliss ( the greatest sports commentator of all time) my favourite is when Sandy Lyle was on the 18th at Royal St George’s and about to win the open, a male streaker ran across the green there was quite a commotion and Peter said ‘all that fuss over a little thing like that’ genius
Truly the voice of golf. Never equalled, never bettered ❤❤

Surely that was Henry Longhurst.
Peters most hilarious quote has to be when the broadcast of the Masters starts on the Thursday night and the camera focuses on Chris DiMarco,s claw putting grip and Peter cuts in with a “ Well well well I haven’t seen a grip like that since they took down the old gents at King’s Cross station, and you can hear the muffled laughter and sniggering of the rest of the commentary team, priceless.
Even if I hadn't liked golf I would have tuned in just for the amazing commentary. Same with test match special.
Peter was one liner magican a true legend of the sport rip my friend
Peter commentating on Seve at The Open! Magical!
Peter along with Alex Hay was pure gold, Alex never seems to get a mention really, shame as he was superb player & commentator in his own right.

Fully agree, also compare how little they needed to say compared to the current ones who talk NON STOP, whist adding very little.
It is impossible to select a top 5 list of favourite comments of the great Peter Alliss, it would be more like a top 100. Peter is the greatest golf commentator and storyteller. There will never be another like him, his voice, humour and knowledge of the game was second to none. We will miss you Peter, RIP.
The best comment he ever made was when Bernhardt lancer started using the long putter “The last time I saw a grip like that was in the now demolished toilets near Euston station “ 🤔😂

It's a shame we were all robbed of one last Open with Peter commentating. Thinking of you now.
A legend. Such wonderful, subtle humour. So missed.
I love how Alex Hay chuckles at Peter. Great commentators!! Truly unforgettable.
I will always be a fan of The Open and I will always be a fan of Mr. Peter Alliss. I would like to believe I could be as big a fan of one had there not been the other, but in my head I don't know if that is true. Mr. Alliss you were so good and are so, so missed. Though I am enjoying the 149th competition this year, my emotions are jumbled and my heart is heavy with loss. Not unlike Jim Murray, Chick Hearn, Dick Enberg, and Vin Scully, I just thank the Lord I was alive to witness your professional excellence. You were a model of unfiltered observational irreverent brilliance and impeccable timing. Thank you for the years. Godspeed and God bless, Sir.
The wonderful Peter alliss, so sadly missed, I personally loved his commentaries, his celebrity matches just brilliant, rest in peace sir.
He had a great way of telling a story in thirty seconds. One of a rare breed of British sports commentators that had this knack sadly lost and will never be replaced.
Peter Alliss was the best. I wish we could turn back the clock.
Greatest golf commentator ever without a shadow of doubt in my humble opinion
Golf has changed so much, but I still miss Peter
When Larry Mize chipped in for The Masters, Alliss' commentary was brilliant and simple. "and the meek shall inherit the earth"

That was the first one I thought of!
Used to love it when ABC ESPN would invite Peter Alliss to take over their broadcast. That says enough about how the fans, other commentators thought of him. The Open won't be the same without him.

As an American, I waited for that changeover, and never left 10 feet from the screen. Peter was legend. I would be all alone watching, laughing hysterically and waking up other people in my house in California! God, he is missed!
He was good; great sense of humor. I remember him doing, back in the 80's, a "one club challenge" event, involving seve, faldo, aoki, and trevino, at st andrews. Trevino & him were entertaining to listen to.
Peter Alliss could say in only a few words what most golf commentators would take 10 minutes to get out. (especially American broadcasters)
Way better clips out there than these 5. Always loved Peter's commentaries of Sevy winning the Open championships
Peter Allis the most knowledgeable and entertaining golf commentator.
You missed his best ..... Turnberry 1977, when Tom Watson hit his 7 iron to a couple of feet on the last hole to clinch victory, and Alliss simply said, "Elementary my dear Watson."
I remember watching the British open some years back and he got to rambling about the local train coming through, where it came from and where it was going etc....
Love it, going to be very sadly missed.... A true golfing great legend
The Carol Varderman commentary sadly missing.....it is on KZread to view, delivered by Peter with the precision of a surgeon He was the voice of Golf, listening to the BBC Golf Masters / The Open great memories growing up. RIP Sir Peter.

Fantastic Peter Alliss.. Sadly missed 👏👏👏
A true legend.
Fantastic Commentor, my favourite was at end of one days play, a large crow flew across screen, Peter said "There goes Christopher Lee winging his way home"
Best commentator ever in golf. I really miss him, he made golf classy/fun, and it was just so natural listening to him talk about golf.

It's at times like this (around the majors) I miss the dulcet tones only he had, he was like a favourite cardigan - a real comfort. The voice of golf indeed.
He once introduced Ronnie Corbet on A Round With Allis as a sporting giant.
Simply a legend ⛳️⛳️👍👍
Miss him so much. RIP ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I always enjoyed listening to Peter. He was great. How often is his famous phrase "hit it, Allis" repeated.
His best commentary was at the 1987 Masters after the monster chip-in by Larry Mize. While American counterparts were whooping and ranting - Peter summed it up perfectly in one line... "Well they say that the meek will inherit the earth" Pure brilliance.
Always remember Peter saying after Sam Torrance sunk the putt to win the Ryder Cup, “What a great day it’s bin, what a rare mood there in.” Irreplaceable.
I can't believe you have missed out my favourite Alliss quote "...and oozing charm from every pore, he threw his to the floor." Genius!

I also missed out an important word... "and oozing charm from every pore, he threw his putter to the floor". Can't remember who it was about, just an angry player after missing a putt.
Golf will never be the same without the voice and humour of Peter Alliss.
Always best in the afternoon, after a 'nice' lunch, seemed to flow more!!!!
Legend. Enough said. 💙
Pure class.
Here's one somebody may remember. Late 80's early 90's Open, me and a drinking buddy are recovering or still drinking in the early morning hours in the Co. Rockies, watching live. Pretty sure it was Payne Stewart teeing off and just after he struck the ball a couple of drunk Yanks screamed (slurred) "You're the man". Peter immediately said in disgust "OH MY" or "OH NO". Then came a pause and we're wondering was Peter condemning the drunkards or did Payne hit a shitty shot? The answer came when Peter slowly and deliberately proclaimed "They must have taken one of those cheap flights over".
He was a wonderful commentator and will be greatly missed, rest in peace Peter
RIP Peter you bought magic to our TVs
So sadly missed - these you tube clips of Peter’s commentary are priceless, the laughs I get from hearing his comments 🤣never afraid was he to say what he wanted. Commentary on the Master’s won’t be the same anymore and for what else he did that BBC had - RIP Peter 😥
You live and talked though the best times...sir....
Too many great barbs to mention. Peter was the Master.
The Voice of Golf ❤️
This would have been much better if you had left the music track off and let Peters commentary speak for itself
Missing him still a terrific commentator sadly missed
I miss him so much
My favourite was Pete Alliss saying that the old Caddie Master at Sunninghill keeps a few stray dogs out the back for the benefit of members who arrive without one!

Absolutely. He's up there with Bill McLaren rugby union, Peter O'Sullivan, horse racing, Dan Maskell, tennis, Murray Walker F1, Richie Benaud, cricket, Brian Moore, football, Ted Lowe snooker. That's only my opinion of course.
We miss you Peter
During the 2017 Walker Cup Ken Brown asked Peter Allis if he knew why the US captain John Miller was known as "Spider" Allis looked at the rather elderly captain and said "Because he can't get out the bath?"
Peter. Our mate.
Absolute legend but far from his best bits. Unfortunately many snowflakes would not see the funny side of Peter's humour. What a sad world we now live in. We miss you Peter and you will always remind me of better days ❤❤❤

Nice compilation but why oh why have the music ? I just wanted to listen to Peter.
The greatest
Was one of the British Opens. Lull in the play and the cameraman focused on one of the walkways across the fairway. There appeared to be a few Japanese nationals crossing with their cameras around their necks. " Amazing what you see when you haven't got a catapult handy." Rip Mr Allis.
I know there's no Peter but the DP World Tour still has better commentary than the PGA Tour
Miss the old boy.
One of his best was his comment when an overweight American player walked towards the green "men don't suffer from anorexia do they"!
There will never be a commentor like him again RI,P so sad

Surely the Carol Voderman one should be on here!
His van de Velde commentary was marvellous. Peter was horrified about what happened and showed the empathy of a fellow golfer all through it. Some people criticised him for 'mocking' Jean V, he absolutely wasn't. And Peter knew from the moment Jean took his driver out that disaster was imminent -'I'm not sure this is right' he said. He really is irreplaceable.

please TURN THE BACKGROUND MUSIC OFF
I’m the opposite age and can do what he does as a warm up.
No mention of Henry Longhurst the first and best of golf commentators.
I always felt between him and Alex Hay, tthey worked a bit like Statler and Waldorf. Quite apart from his politics (I don't care for them), he made watching golf funny and interesting which tells you all you need to know - it will never be the same again.
Could have done without the music.
I miss his voice
What a legend. Hoola champion for many years.lol. Brilliant
Whaaaaaat?! I can't hear you over the music!

As Tiger would say… If I watch golf , I make sure it’s muted” He was not speaking of this great man but US coverage ! Today’s telecast is so sour as they discuss shots like the amateur has never seen it or visualized it before. Most golfers can visualize the shot but have little success hitting it. Be like Miller, set up the shot and get out of the way .
"What are you doing? What on Earth are you doing? No Jean, please. Would someone kindly go and stop him. Give him a large brandy and mop him down."
When Paul Dunne was in contention at the Open as an amateur in 2015 Peter said as he was coming off the 18th embracing his mother: "That must be Mum, or maybe he likes older women" Gold
The best commentator I ever heard. I just couldn't watch No.1 though as it is just too much for me.
Golf is not the same anymore
I miss Peter allies but the only thing I really disagreed with was his commentary on Jean V de V 18th. Who would really remember him if he'd taken a 5 iron off the tee, bogeyed the hole and won the Claret Jug? EVERYONE remembers's his brilliantly stoic speech afterwards (and his beautiful and charming wife laughing during the mayhem)! Can you remember who did win? Does it really matter?
Voice of golf ⛳️ not bad player either just a shame BBC turned it’s back on golf mustn’t of been posh enough for it after tennis and ruggers
