I have watched Part 2 and now watching Part 3. I have noticed several well-known and famous actors in character in both Part2 & 3. This is a very good documentary.

Still sad to think that in London Pooor he described the people as "savages". Why the east "the dark side associated with poverty and squalor"

Best episode of this series ! On Victorian Britian, it shows the shame of a society which was to treat those who could care for themselves with comtempt ! Society can be judged by the way it treats its most vulnerable !

@34:36 Tom Hollander evidently has never heard any of the many recordings of Eliot's voice. 🤣

Listening to this as I have lived in London and sensed no depth or 'magic' in it. As I intend to stay, I want to find some interesting stuff in it. Mind you, I see museums and galleries but compared to the endearing charm of Yorkshire, that's not much. I need stories I suppose to like a place.

The greatest city remark is not an endorsement or an approval of Victorian London. It's a comment on its size, financial power and the reach it had across the world at the time. I'd have thought that from the tone of this documentary this was blindingly obvious.

Sadly his anti establishment and royalist view vastly skew and undermine the accuracy of his findings, interpretations and recordings across much of his work. If you read any Ackroyd work also reference other sources to obtain an informed balance.
