Pete Waterman's Brand new 'OO' Gauge Layout | Making Tracks

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This summer, a threemonth exhibition will launch in Chester Cathedral and the centrepiece will be a mammoth 64ft long ‘OO’ gauge model of the West Coast Main Line built by Pete Waterman and his friends. MIKE WILD and RICHARD WATSON visited the build in its final phases of construction to find out more.

A long, straight layout, but the track has gentle, sweeping curves. That, to me, is what makes a layout aesthetically pleasing. Hoping to see this in the flesh.

The West coast main line, is a fantastic location to model ! The sheer variety of Diesel and electric power, certainly from the 1960's to the 1990's, and probably up to to the present day, has been quite unlike any other electrified railway in the whole of the UK ! This model is absolutely brilliant and captures the atmosphere perfectly. Well done, to everyone involved.

A lovely WCML themed layout. Those bridges, tunnel portals and the OLE really capture the feel nicely....and its so LONG! Can't wait to see the "other half" of it develop. I'd love to see this layout hopefully at an exhibition in the future. I just hope its length doesn't make it prohibitively difficult to transport. But then I suppose when you've got money like Pete has, you can afford to do everything big... Interestingly, 64ft is almost the exact same length as a full-scale BR Mk1 coach! Coincidence?

My father had a very comprehensive Hornby layout in the mid 1950's and as l child we would go walk to Savages every Saturday morning and buy something new. I returned to OO gauge after in my early teenage years I discovered other pursuits like motorbikes, girls and punk and ska music. It was a shame looking back as my father a BR signalman with his S&T mate built me a brilliant setup which was push panel operated, fully absolute blocked, just had to set the trains path and away it would go and trains following would obey proper rules too with colour signals relayed into points and neutral sections connected to red signals bringing the train to a halt before the signal. I think it was 79 or 80 I featured in the Hornby magazine as being an utter nerd on railways when I was given a tour of the factory in Margate, an excellent day that was and my nerdness was tested too :P The only niggle I have with model rail is the lack of actual realistic running e.g. you set the throttle to gain speed and you use a brake to lose speed and you balance your loco or multiple unit between throttle, freewheel and brake, well that and bogie mounted couplings causing motorway sized gaps between stock but I have come back into the scene with a vengeance and started my current running stock with an ancient GWR Pannier and equally venerable 08 shunter, paid less than a fiver for both and both now look as good or better than factory adding class 86, 73, 37, 33, 9400 Pannier, CR Pug (insanely fast little thing), rebuilt the power cars of a Blue Pullman set and in the process of building up a proper built layout.

Mostly, the gantries are laser cut and the registration arm brackets are brass angle and brass wire with insulators from Sommerfeldt. The single cantilever masts are from Peco and the catenary wire is also Sommerfeldt and Peco. The OLE is automatically tensioned which is not shown in the video as the tensioning system was not installed at the time filming.
