I forgot his name but there was a priest who got cancelled because he dared to speak up about what was being taught to children at some school. He was all for gay rights etc etc but then they started using revolutionary rhetoric but when he tried to speak out about it he got suspended. Basically anyone who dares to express the "wrong" opinion gets cancelled and, if they are well and truly unlucky, get doxxed/lose their job and have their lives completely ruined. Fair enough though, nobody forced me to listen, not being a god isn't meant as an insult, and as far as I know he's a good bloke and I'd have a drink with him and all that, he just isn't a musical god, he's a good businessman who knew what he could promote to the hilt to sell vast amounts of and do very well out of it, fair enough again, but not a god.

@@arrangrant6037 I can indeed explain that. The advertising authorities wanted ads to be more diverse and reflect the country as a whole. But ads are short and they use visual shorthand to represent this (rather than having characters spend time going 'I'm a working-class mum from Burnley, and here is my friend who likes Strictly and breeding pugs'). Which is why we get the mixed-race couple, the gay couple etc. A similar thing happened in the 80s when ad companies wanted to appeal to feminist women in corporate jobs so we got a whole slew of ads featuring feisty ladies outdoing their male counterparts (think Paula Hamilton in the VW ad or the one where the office lady cuts the balls off a Newton's Cradle).

I auditioned for Popstars, the Rivals.....lol, I met Pete Waterman on the steps of the Lowry a few days before, and thought I'd hand him a copy of a demo I'd made of a song I thought would be right up his street. He brushed me off and said it was against the rules. I didn't know about the contest or what he was going on about. Anyway I decided to go for it after talking to my workmates who encouraged me, if only to get back at Pete! He of course recognised me when I was in the crowd with my guitar entertaining the troops singing songs by Sparks. I was interviewed on Granada twice, which thankfully friends had seen that day. It was hilarious...I did my audition later in the day with four other auditionees and sang "New Age" by Lou Reed. The others were doing the usual predictable audition repertoire. I performed well but never got past that initial stage, but hey, the judge said "It's nice to hear music for a change.." That said it all for me.

Interesting to hear his take on current issues but the idea that he, Cowell and the rest of the cookie-cutter 'star' manufacturing operations of that ilk was about creating great music is a joke. They operated a conveyor belt of prefabricated bands and solo artists with as much attention to quality and innovation as MFI used to put into their flat-pack furniture. They weren't choosing the best artists, they were choosing the ones that would fit nicely into pre-defined marketing slots, it was a very slick operation of course, very clever and very lucrative, but it wasn't about music. There was a big clue in the name 'Hit Factory'. The fact that some of their 'creations' did so well was almost entirely down to marketing and hype, and, sadly, a lamentably undiscriminating public. Musical talent or genuine creativity on the part of the artists was an incidental bonus. Nothing against the guy, he's a very successful producer and businessman, and probably a good laugh to have a drink with but seeing pop idol as some kind of golden age of great music is just a reflection of how awful and tawdry the current mainstream 'music', is. A very small number of notable exceptions aside, but they almost invariably didn't get created by a producer.

If there is really a 'cancel culture', who's controlling it? No one has cancelled freedom of expression in UK. Sure we have the Equality Act, but it's up to every one of us to keep EXPRESSING our opinions - out of genuine belief and not pure prejudice - and *as importantly* to LISTEN respectfully to the opinions of others. Replacing conversation with rant has created much of bad feeling and causing offence when opinions shouldn't do. To some extent the reality/ talent show/ instant celeb TV 'industry' that PW helped to create dug its own pit in creating a soft, luvvy, cuddly, glitzy, self-congratulatory environment for young people. No wonder many now feel so falsely emboldened and entitled that they easily take offence when a different opinion is voiced.

Go to Milton Keynes Marshall arena on the weekend of mid October if you want to meet him in real life and enjoy his main hobby love in life of his very long accurate model railway layout on display at the Hornby trai show . I met him at similar ones and got a photo with him too and a long train chat and guaranteed no security of his around !

I have always said that if you cannot sit down opposite people you disagree with and talk about the disagreement, then there is only one direction the situation can go. You do not even need to come to a conclusion, but you at least need the ability to work things out. Once diplomacy is over conflict becomes the only option left. Always beware of those people who try to silence the other side. Personally I always welcome people I disagree with to openly state their ideas and intentions, that way I either get to examine the situation more closely or I get to be the smartest guy in the room if their ideas are terrible... win/win!

There have always been controls on artists such as film stars contracted to studios from the earliest days. In more recent times, The Beatles found there were consequences for saying the 'wrong thing' and so it is today. The difference now is social media where keyboard warriors react without thinking.

Yes, pretty much revived her career in the late 80’s, scoring her a Top 5 hit and one of Donna’s now legendary classics, “This Time I Know It’s For Real”. The entire “Another Place And Time” album was written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman and recorded at PWL. It really was SAW at the pinnacle of their careers. Donna returned to PWL and Pete to record again in 1995. She was scheduled to perform on the Hit Factory Live concert a few years back. Donna’s untimely and heartbreaking passing, sadly meant that was never possible.

@@wishkid79 Really another PWL album in 1995 with Donna Summer? So why didn't it reach frution? Plus Stock Aitken Waterman had broken up by 1995 right? Matt left by 1991. I know that Mike and Matt worked together still in the early 90's without Pete and Pete and Mike worked together as well in the early 90's and that was it!

@@SuperMarioBrosIII Not a full album with PWL. She went in to record a few tracks, with Gary Miller if my memory serves me right. PWL was more than just SAW, btw. Stock & Aitken were just the most successful team there. Followed by Topham & Twigg a few years later.

And yes I equally enjoyed the Madchester or acid house scene at that, time, but some nights you just wanted to go out and have a blast on a bird called Sharon in stilettos and that was the music of love 🍆
