I would recommend you go to www.flutopedia.com/. Good explanation of determining factors for measurements and a calculator that works.

can you not drill a hole in a 1 /2" dowel of pine?

You may find that is no simple task drilling into end grain as the drill will tend to go off track. I suppose it isn't impossible just very difficult to do.
