No offense but his list does not cover a lot of ground in terms of different genre's and a very small window in terms of the years the records were made. Very far from obscure as well. IMHO of course. In all fairness for me it would be impossible to name 20 favorite albums because most of us go through phases and what might be a favorite today may not be tomorrow. Don't limit yourself to a couple styles of music! Lots of great music out there and most of it was never got the radio airplay it deserved!

Nothing great here. Might put Genesis , Whitesnake, The Cult, Hall of the mt .. in my top 800 albums of all time. But the rest I dislike, surprised not to see Pink FLoyd or a Queen - not that Pete loves them just that everyone overrated them. I mean i know it's all opinion, I am just glad i don't have to listen.

The best bands are Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield, very early Elvis Costello , Graham Parker and the Rumor, The Smith, The Replacements, the Kinks, The Beatles but not their last two bloated records that everyone loves, Hendrix, The Yardbirds, Love with Arthur Lee, The Move (became ELO but harder rockin). Rush is maybe the worst of the bands.I know they have talent, just annoying.

Genesis---Abacab 4. Rush---Grace Under Pressure 5. Stevie Ray Vaughan---Couldn't Stand the Weather 6. Boston---Don't Look Back 7. Doobie Brothers---The Captain and Me 8. @Alibobs Marland BURN is an underrated masterpiece. It was interesting hearing from people after the Iron Curtain came down in 1991. There are strange and funny stories from then, students, from all over the Soviet Union. EXAMPLE One guy said they had to play Sail Away off Burn for their music exam ! He didn't elaborate enough to say what he actually played.

Great top 20.. So hard to choose.. It would be so easy to put together a top 20 with just Zeppelin, Sabbath and Purple albums.. Those bands pretty much set the course for what was to come. Pleased to see UFO in there. Great band. And Rising. When Dio sings "there's a Rainbow Rising" during Stargazer, it brings tears to my eyes because of it beauty, power and sheer epic-ness. .

@@davidwesley5159 Well, Dio had his own opinions. He didn't like "Rainbow in the Dark" and was about to destroy the song while making the first Dio album. He thought it was too poppy. Probably "Shoot Shoot" and "Mystery" is metal then. He was an excellent musician but when it comes to opinions, he is one of us. It is an interesting view though. It was Dio's first album with a proper band, so it meant a lot to him.

All the other stuff is great but your friends were jealous not angry because you developed good taste and they didn't understand it yet. Music is meant to take you wherever you want it to take you and I was glad I kept an open mind or I would have never experienced all the different flavors of rock, metal, blues, jazz, classical and everything in between the cracks that could be hard to find but when you open your mind and Branch out you will find everything you have been looking for and sometimes a little extra. I love rock music but I like Chicago, Traffic, Steely Dan, C.S.N.& Y. , Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, Eagles, etc. There's so much good stuff that people will question if you forgot where you came from, all you forgot to do was open the window a little wider and let everything in. I used to listen to just what everyone else did until my older brother showed me that good music is endless and it just keeps getting better all the time. Keep on searching and you will like what you find, peace ! 🎸

We have at least one LP in common!! But it’s hard as you say to list a top 20, my list is more based on maybe having just one or two classic songs on an album, if we’re honest there aren’t many albums where we like all the tracks! That’s why I always prefer live albums, where most of the time the artist picks the best of their catalogue... In no particular order... Scorpions - Love ar First Sting Yes - The Yes Album Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell Rainbow - Rising Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II Foreigner - 4 Deep Purple - Burn The Who - Who’s Next Motörhead - Overkill Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Len-nerd Skin-nerd UFO - Phenomemon Journey - Escape Blackfoot - Strikes Rush - 2112 Van Halen - Van Halen Frank Zappa - Sheikh Yerbouti Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent Rory Gallagher - Photo-Finish Rolling Stones - Beggar’s Banquet

Not sure where my favorite albums would rank, but I can say my personal list would definitely include material from Styx, Genesis (prog era), Kansas (first 6 albums), Iron Maiden, Dio, Rainbow (the albums with Dio), Opeth (both the metal and later prog era), Borknagar, Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Strapping Young Lad, and Devin Townsend (tied with Styx for being at the top of my list). Also really like Dimmu Borgir (ICS Vortex era), but not sure if they'd rank in my top 20. Do you have any recommendations for Styx-like bands?

@Crazy Cooter I totally agree with you about Ted Nugent. I could of added him as well because he has made some brilliant albums like Cat Scratch Fever, Weekend Warriors, Double Live Gonzo, etc. If I made up a top 30 albums Ted would surely be there. 🙂

Well I was going to comment my top 20 studio albums of all time, but I can’t leave out the rest of my top 50. There’s a lot of Rush in there. A lot of Yes, Black Sabbath, Mark Knopfler. A few David Bowie albums, a few Aerosmith... A couple Blue Öyster Cult albums as well as quite a few Judas Priest albums. I just can’t make a list that excludes anything from my top 50.

Great list Pete. I'll give it a whack. I could do a top 20 of all time just using Yes, Beatles and Crimson, but I'm going to use the no more than one by each band. So that way 20 artists will be represented. Not in order really, but I'll begin with my favorite album of all time by anyone. Relayer - Yes The Beatles- The Beatles Queen II - Queen Permanent Waves - Rush Turn of The Cards - Renaissance Venus and Mars - Wings Somewhere I've Never Travelled - Ambrosia Dog and Butterfly- Heart Love It To Death- Alice Cooper Larks Tongues In Aspic - King Crimson Axis Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix Experience A Trick of the Tail - Genesis Birds Bees Monkees - The Monkees Every Good Boy Deserves Favour- Moody Blues Leftoverature - Kansas Pieces of Eight - Styx The Division Bell - Pink Floyd Aqualung - Jethro Tull Who's Next - Who Demons And Wizards - Uriah Heep

remember that film where Henry Winkler played an unstable Viet Nam vet? out of nowhere, they end the film w/ 'Carry on my wayward son' .it greatly helps a not so great movie. good list, Pete .your inclusion of DEEP PURPLE 'in rock', shows that ,in the end, it's the power of electric guitar, one of the last Century's greatest inventions, that drives your love of music. same here .nice Les Paul.

@@wetherby6774 They didn't quite become TSO, but producer, Paul O'Neill, brought together several ex-Savatage members to form the core of the TSO in 96. O'Neill himself had produced albums for Savatage from "In the Hall of the Mountain King" onwards. So yeah, TSO were kind of birthed out of Savatage.
