Pesticide-free DIY: Rid your home of Stink Bugs! (Viewer tested!)

Over 1000 viewers commented on my first Stink Bug video and these deterrents are all based on what they found worked for them! This video is all about how to rid the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys) from your house. There are many creative methods described involving dish detergents sprayed on outside walls where they are massing, use of essential oils indoors and out, rubbing aromatic dryer sheets on screens and edges of doors, freezing with pressurized dust-off spray, using wet paper towels, simple light traps and many other methods. I describe how to identify the invasive Brown Marmorated Stink bug and how to distinguish it from native stink bugs species. I show you why these bugs are also called shield bugs. I test using live stink bugs the exact size of crevices they can enter. I show you how to make a Virginia Tech University tested home-made stink bug trap the really works and much more.

if you cut a pair of panty hose or something similar and then slip it inside the vacuum hose and secure it with a rubber band then you have an easy way to dispose of them. A container of soapy water to knock them into works as well because one of their natural defenses is to just let go and fall. Haha I commented before he got to this part 7:28

I am so thankful that the leaf-footed bugs, so far, haven't come inside. But they have laid many eggs on the north side of the house by the back kitchen window. I have to get them under control before the tomatoes grow and turn red. Besides them, I have to fight off the cardinals. Just before they turn red, the trees fill up with cardinals. I think they sit up in the trees and lick their lips, waiting. Thanks for the video. I found one where a guy make a trap for outside, and I thought it was you, but it was JRProductionsRGH. I love your site, though and shared it with my daughter.

Frank, Adams County, PA here. Live in the woods and get a fair amount. Finding 1-3 inside per day even in the winter. The lights are brightest in the kitchen. Have found them coming in through the chimney and have done my best to block. Your video was excellent but I honestly feel they can squeeze through tighter spaces when they really want to.(heat, breeding). My chimney is fairly well sealed but the chimney cap has small hole that I have to believe they are squeezing through. The idea of washing done the wall with Dawn sounds like a great idea. Every October they are all over the outside wall of the house that gets the most sun. I didn’t realize they leave the pheromones also. I use dawn inside with decent results so outside it being a deterrent and removal of pheromone scent sounds good. From other Sounds like Peppermint works well also. Thanks for the ideas and update.

Hi Rich Boyd ! Thanks for your observations and insightful and thoughtful share. I agree with you re: squeezing in. My test conditions had a smooth granite surface that lack traction so really has limited real world application. With traction I am sure that they can "squeeze" through even tighter spaces as you say! Let me know if you test some of these solutions and how they work! good luck!

Hi! I found your videos while looking for something to help my brother to get over a phobia of stinkbugs. I really love the passion and enthusiasm you have for mundane, everyday wildlife, even pest species! It's super refreshing to see in this society where even many animal lovers harbor hatred towards certain insects- particularly things like stinkbugs, wasps, or mosquitoes that are seen as nuisance species. I've even seen people wholeheartedly calling for their extinction! Unbelievable!! I had no idea these guys were invasive here and that they're such a big agricultural problem- I'll definitely try to kill them whenever I find them from now on, instead of just leaving them be or letting them outside. I'll definitely be trying the dish soap methods in the future, since that seems to be the most humane method without them releasing their smell- I'm actually SO sensitive to it that I can't even taste or smell even the tiniest bit of cilantro anymore, it'll make me gag and retch! Thank you so much for making this video, I'll be sure to check out more and I'm looking forward to the content you put out in the future. It's so awesome seeing someone else this passionate about local wildlife ❤️❤️

We have to deal with them all year round 😡. Funny thing is I'm on a fixed income so I keep my thermostat down very low and put on a sweater to stay warm. I believe since I live in a townhouse (the end one) that maybe they can be coming through to our house from the others. I will be putting some lavender and marigold plants outside the house and trying some essential oils and garlic at the same time on the window sills.. hey the more hopefully the better. I can't stand them. And yes that dive bombing has me jumping out of my recliner fast as all hell! I crochet and sometimes throughout the whole night and you can just imagine how fast I can get a huge blanket and 2 Chihuahuas off my chair so I can get that sucker and kill it!! Good luck 🤞

The biggest take-a-way from your video is to compound the natural methods used. People just use one method and when that doesn't work, they will use another. Instead of using one method at a time, use them together. And with the natural methods like using essential oils and/or fabric softener, use are also making your home smell nice. Thanks you for the info!!

As soon as you mentioned using a sweeper, I thought to myself...he must not be able to smell them! Because as soon as you try to sweep them they stink up. I keep a bottle or jar half way up with isopropyl alcohol. I can either just put the opening over them if they are on the ceiling and they drop right in. If they're on the wall you can use the lid to help flick them in. I just leave it on the window sill ready to grab. It remains stink free for several months till you get it kinda full then it might reek a bit....just throw it away and get a new bottle or pickle jar.

Very startling! They are loud and even though I know they don't bite I scream and abruptly get up, my husband grabs his cup and scoops it up and takes it outside. I'm going to try the turkey pan, light, water and dish soap and then seal the house up after they get hungry and leave this spring.

I will use either 2 disposable plastic cups or 1 cup and a thin piece of paper to catch them when on walls, ceiling, etc. Place 1 cup over top and slide the cup to knock the stinkbug off balance. Place another cup on top then dispose as you wish. Wash and reuse the same cups designated for stink bug removal. The 1 cup method is enough to trap them but those stickers move quickly.

I don't use pesticides because of my pets. I tried a mix of essential oils like cloves, cinnamon, lemon grass which repels other bugs but they seemed to like the oils I used. So I started catching them in a small disposable cup and flushing them down the toilet. They are very resilient, adaptable and even ornery at times - flying at me when they know I'm coming for them. This is my best stink bug solution. I keep empty jelly jars, or whatever I have on hand, in each room where they like to gather. I simply trap/collect them in there and put the lid on. Smashing, or spraying them causes them to release their horrid oder; thus, attracting more bugs. Once they suffocate and die, I empty the jars and reuse. Within no time, my home is free of these nasty bugs.

In my upstairs room I don't use heaters in the winter during the day, then when I go up at night and warm it up, out they come from who knows where. The only good thing is that they are very easy to catch since they are so slow. My cat often points them out to me by staring intently at one I have not noticed. He won't try to catch them, probably does not like the smell either, but I can when he alerts me.

I put light traps all over my house and in the attic and basement, and they didn't work at all. Tried all different types of lights, and used all the methods for this that I found, and still didn't work. I have a dedicated vacuum cleaner that I use just for them and keep that on the porch, since you can't get the smell out once you've vacuumed them. That equals lots of water for mosquito larva😢, but also for dragonflies. The girls and I always did a dragonfly ‘happy dance’ when we’d see that they were hatching and starting to fly around the yard, gobbling black flies and gnats up!😊

@@littledabwilldoya9717 I hear ya. It’s the wild and remote areas that seem to have swarming gnats. I’ve built several small frog ponds which attracts so much wildlife, including dragonflies which are so interesting and like you said, help to maintain balance. Bats are another critter that would help… their population has diminished a lot due to disease.

They love the light. I live in Michigan and I had them so bad last summer. I couldn't keep them out too many cakes they love tiny cracks. You could have brand new windows and there in. Why don't foreign countries spray for them?? So when they come in from the cold???? What do they eat??? I know they come in but what do they eat all winter in your house.

Over wintering insects enter a semi-resting hibernating state called diapause. Lower metabolism and no sexual development. Stink bugs feed on fresh green leaves and fruit during the summer. The sink bugs get drawn to the warm interior of your home and think spring has arrived!!! The interior of the house is really too warm and dry for them to survive the winter with out eating. No food in the house for them and they will eventually starve or dry out to death.

That’s a good point about the smell, my wife and kids all have a different smell explanation on them and I can’t pick up on any smell or maybe an earthy forest smell? Other than that I don’t find that they stink.

Speaking of pesticides...does anyone here know what chemical farmers use on their crops that has a VERY strong smell, almost like an extreme cilantro scent? In the spring, they spray it on the crop next to our house and the smell is so intense we can smell it inside our house! We have to keep all our doors and windows shut as much as possible for a couple days because the smell is so strong. I've always wondered what it was. We've used 2-4D and never noticed a smell with that at all.

So I’ve recently run into a stink bug issue. It seems that they are getting into my house through my window a/c. I’ve taped off around it but I think they are still getting in through the actual unit. Any idea how to prevent that from continuing to happen

Unfortunately I can't say with out seeing the unit. But you do need to figure it out ...they can damage internal components or short it out. Sorry,
