When I see a bug or something in my house (I'm not talking about pests, but one spider or something like that) I always move them outside and tell them "you can't stay here if you don't pay rent" It's silly, but I always find it funny

Do I have a story. Ok so I hd just woken up to go to my bathroom and there was this tarantula just sitting on my towel. and half awake I'm just staring at the spider thinking '' Is this real life? '' Then I'm fully awake and realize there is a fucking fat tarantula on my towel. And I have sent all my 18 years of life not encountering a tarantula but in the time that I '' tried '' to be vegan, I encounter this thing. And I'm all alone, and I'm like '' crap i'm vegan I can't kill u. '' So run too the kitchen to grab little container with with a blue cover. When I come back to the bathroom the spider is gone, I wanted to die. I looked around audit ended up in the shower. So I go really slow towards it and with the dish thingy I cover it and it jumps (but I caught it) and I'm literally in my shower just holding it down. I then move it to the wall and slide up (the wall is connected to the floor in a curve, not a 90 degree angle, so It slid perfectly) I stayed on the wall for a bit as well, thinking how I'm gonna get the cover on. then it hit me to drag the poor spider all around the shower wall to the side where e would normally enter the shower. and with the cover, I had it ready and as I slide the container off the wall, I connect it straight to the cover. IT WAS A SUCCESS! So I run outside, and now I'm like '' shit, how am I gonna open it without it jumping on me or whatever. and then the idea came to cover it and open it with the same towel the spider was on. so I go to the grass and open stand the spider jumps and I scream. lol. So the spider lands on the grass and runs immediately. I felt a big relief knowing that I didn't have to kill it. It took me 30 minutes to get it out but I was still relived.

If it's just one harmless bug like a spider or a grasshopper I will put them outside. But we have a cockroach infestation and will definitely be spraying the house. Minimize harm when possible, but it's just not safe to be living with pests like cockroaches or rats. They carry so many diseases.

I recently had an ant infestation in my apartment. I decided it wasn't so bad. They were mostly in one area that I didn't frequent very much and they weren't doing any harm. Then flying ants started coming in and I found the source was a damaged window sill. I reported it to the office and the ants, which I started to suspect were termites kept getting worse. An exterminator came out and sprayed and they patched up the window sill. All is good now, but i still feel a little bad. The exterminator confirmed they were ants. I have a phobia of roaches, beetles, basically any insect that has a heavy shell. I have a hard time visiting my mom because she has roaches. She's tried for years to get rid of them unsuccessfully. So I know how you feel.

can you please make a post about veganism vs indigenous/traditional culture. this loud obnoxious white dude who was recommended on your videos made one but it was very much like emotive and devoid of context. like the PDF of "cattle before crops" which explores the history of domestication and thus food ways within the Sahel and Serengeti. it's understandable that cows and grazers are kept or killed in lands where the biomass is mostly inedible to humans and/or where fertile lands away from alluvial soil are scare. where drought is a fact rather than an exception. I have some family from Katanga in DRC and meat was a nutritional need because hunger seasons occurred yearly where saved crops were all eaten and new crops were too immature to eat. I don't understand why people judge folks eating traditionally where food insecurities are a fact rather than exception. Why don't they look at the work of Weston Price in Africa showing cavities and malnutrition between farmers of poorer soils and mixed agro-pastoralists. I don't understand why Western vegans who've never known what it's like to live in the global South or in the Far north make judgements. Why do people not understand the mutualistic relationships of plants non-human animals and humans? how can people not understand the cultural and spiritual reality of most herders in The Sahelian/Miombo and their livestock? what are your studies pointing to on the topic? because most of these vegans are fucking pompous and oblivious on channels and in the comments.

This is something I struggle with a lot. I had a fruit fly problem a few years back because I'm only allowed to take my trash out once a week (we have to put it out on the street on a specific day and they come pick it up that day). It took me so long to finally realise they weren't going away on their own and I would indeed have to kill them. I can't kill any bug with my hands or an object, except for mosquitos, because I feel like that's self-defence. I'm quite ok with the occasional lone bug hanging around my house and usually just let them be or take them outside. Now mice are another story. I have had pet rats for a few years and my whole family loves them intensely. Since mice are just tiny rats and incredibly cute, we absolutely refuse to harm them. We usually end up trapping them in the rats' food container and carrying them outside, surprisingly enough once you carry enough of them away it usually works for a while. I do wish I had more balls when it comes to pest control, but I'm the softest softy.

I love your honesty. and in terms of vegan advocacy I think this topic can still be helpful, because talking about your experience with it, and showing people that you yourself aren't perfect, and have topics you work on etc, can help them understand that in your eyes they don't have to be perfect, but every little bit helps.

I think Veganism is about the system and how we can change it, by avoiding animal products. Killing or not killing ants (or flys) in your appartment doesn't influence the system. So in my opinion, it's totally fine to kill them. But you should protect bees, killing them would be very very unethical, because they do influence the system more than little ants. That's just my opinion on insects.

Any ideology can be carried to an extreme. Extremism begets it's own rewards. Putting the existence of an insect or rodent above the personal health and safety of yourself or your family is misguided. Compassion, like all worthy ideals, has practical limits. Moderation in all things is an equally worthy ideal.

Ruby Tuesday the thing is, veganism =\= Jainism. You can live a full and happy life like a Jain and watch every step you make so you don't crush a bug, but it's inconvenient so we don't. We kill bugs every day. We eat micro bug remnants every day. I think vegans really pretend to care about bugs but when it's inconvenient for THEM they don't even think about it. Vegans cherry pick.

Also maybe start looking at/handling the ones you find less repulsive. Thank you for posting this video! My roommate and I have had terrible roach problems in our apartment, and even though I kept taking them outside, more would come in. It finally got to the point where we needed to spray (we had five in one night. It was just terrible). We've found a few dead since then, and I feel awful every time I see them. It was such a difficult decision because I don't want to see them suffering or be the one responsible for their deaths, but at the same time, it was something that could not be left alone.

Rhea Vania I'm the same, the idea of catching a spider to put outside to me gives me anxiety just thinking about. I'd rather give it a quick death. I don't feel bad about it and I can't. I just imagine if it knew how to get in, it would get in again, likely due to the temperature control of the house makes it want in. Also I ain't going near that thing with a cup, my worst nightmare is if I did somehow magically get it in a cup, what if I'm outside and I look inside and it's not there!!!! I'd DIE!

If you have an infestation of cockroaches, bedbugs or something similar, I implore you to get that dealt with quickly. I lived in an apartment building where our downstairs neighbours were against killing any living thing. We ended up getting an explosion of pests (including both cockroaches and bedbugs) up to our place that was really hard to get rid of, even after those tenants got evicted. So we were getting almost weekly poison spraying all over our living space and I got super sick from all of it. We ended up needing to move away from there, breaking a lease and it was really expensive for us.

My mom had a raccoon friend that came in for a cat food treat. They removed the cat door then the raccoon broke through the window screens. My dad got a live trap and drove him out to some woods. Attic squirrels when they are out collecting food cover your vents with a fine hardware cloth and it helps keep them out. Bees are really hard to take care humanely, it is only a few nests that can be successful removed with out destroying the hive. We found that out the hard way.

One of my biggest fears is cockroaches getting in my room (I live in Florida so they’re EVERYWHERE) because my door is closest to the garage door and the kitchen. Likes it’s crippling and I lay awake at night sometimes fearing one will be on my bed one day. So I got a door draft stopper for my bedroom and the door to the garage so it’s nearly impossible for a cockroach to get under the door

We have mice in our house, and I recently chose to switch from sticky traps, which kill them slowly, to the old fashioned mouse trap, which kills them quickly. I figured this was more humane, but it’s still a gray area.

I have a problem with mice! The biggest problem, is that I rent and share with few people and the house is old with a lot of holes and double walls and landlord would not seal them. I was trying not harmful methods for half a year, like removing food and using mint oil to scare them away. Cat option is very cruel, so I did not use it. At the end, I needed to order pest control, breaking my heart. After that, landlord would seal all holes and I hope, that they will never come back... Mice would wake me up at night, being loud in the sealing and walls.

I work on a size and room rule with spiders. If they're small, or in the bathroom, they can stay. Also, if they only come out at night. Otherwise, they're out. Odd, I know. Flies, however, can die. My one real hate is flies.

I just want to say... I love your videos. Most Vegans scare me off by their aggression but you are full of facts and have a general understanding for humans as they are and how they want to be. I am originally from MN but moved to Maui, Hawaii 4 years ago. I have been learning about Bugs ever since. I was so scared of cockroaches and other bugs. Now after living here and dealing with many kinds of bugs I am less freaked out. There are many types of cockroaches, some are real yukky and some are not. Check out the Harlequin cockroach...Its kind of pretty. Also the Field Cockroach is common here but lives outside in the fields and does not want to be inside like the German cockroach. The Spiders here eat the annoying ants so I let them live in my bathroom behind the toilet. Geckos and anoles eat bugs. I still hate ants... and they are so bad here looking for water... that one night I went to have a drink of water in bed and they crawled from my cup onto my top lip and face..... It was so scary and they also will nest in electronics so although they dont eat your house and dont bite... they can be harmfulish. The 2 things that really freak me out here are the Centipedes and the rats. EKKK... I hate killing anything... and I do try to get mice and rats with no kill but.... sometimes its impossible. The other pest we have here in Hawaii are chickens. Sounds crazy but true. Feral, Wild chickens.. But I like them because they eat roaches and centipedes.

If you fill your home with mint, spray peppermint essential oil in corners of your ceiling, along your baseboards, make potpourri with dried mint, just generally make your home minty fresh, spiders, ants, roaches and mice will likely move out.

lol my apartment building has cockroaches all over the basement (I doubt the landlord sprays for bugs, he hasn't yet this spring, unlike my last place) and now I actually do have brown recluse spiders the size of QUARTERS in my 2ND STORY apartment. (yes I checked - their back markings and shapes look exactly the same, compared to the one I have had trapped under a glass for the past 2 days.) I'm pretty sure I've been mistaking them for house spiders for months as they've been growing. now I know to look up insects before I let them go outside. lesson thoroughly learned.

I'm with you on the harmful vs not-harmful method of dealing with insects though, for pretty much all the situations of not-harmful bugs I've encountered. I usually just let them be or put them outside of they are annoying or creepy. growing up with wasps constantly invading the house in summer taught me that some bugs you really should just kill, for your own safety and sanity.

Even before going vegan I never liked spraying bug spray. There are more natural methods to kill insects, like borax and sugar paste. What worked for me the best is just having a regular cleaning schedule, dusting every day, and cleaning surfaces with natural cleaners like vinegar mixed with water.

I keep the counters clean, wiped etc. But they still come and infest food etc. I'm ok killing them honestly, but I have a dog and don't want her anywhere near anything toxic and I can't find a way to get rid of them that won't potentially harm my pup. Any ideas of non-toxic ways that actually work?

Glad you talked about this. We actually had a bee infestation, and tried my hardest to set them free outside but eventually there were 30-40 bees in my apartment every day. And they die relatively quickly like within a day... my bf and I even got into an argument about them. He would kill them right away to 'end their suffering' if there were a lot and it was night (since they are attracted to light and will die outside wherever we leave them), while I would just ignore them and let them die 'peacefully' :/

I've been really bothered by insects since I was a child too, and I don't really know where it comes from. I know my fear of bugs probably solidified that one time I stayed at my grandparents home in the countryside and these 3cm big bugs kept dropping from the ceiling all night - such a horrible sound, plus some was landing on me! I somehow got trough it one night, but the second night it was EVEN WORSE and I simply refused and said I would sleep in the bathtub or wherever, but certainly not in that room, nope. Bugs still fill me with creepling fear, the make me totally uneasy, I will get shaky at the sight of them if they're in my house. Luckily, I could semi-overcome my fear of spiders trough time as I realized there mostly slow and eat other stuff like gnats and little flies that also gross me out. Usually when I see a (bigger) spider I tell it to please hide away, because I don't want to see it haha and they usually do (I know it's silly to talk to them, but it makes me feel better). I used to be really bothered by moths too, because they fly around and will collide with your body and eew. But I kinda got used to them and now think of them more as dark butterflies, which in reality, they are anyway. I still don't like them flying in my face, but if they're somewhere else in the room they don't bother me anymore and I can admire their colouring if they're sitting still anywhere.

Let's be honest. The rationale behind this video is not self-defence. It's squeamishness. Keep a clean house (especially kitchen) and any "pests" that may have found there way into your home will eventually leave of their own volition (termite are of course a different and more difficult situation).

I try to be as humane as possible with insects in the house. I realize they're just trying to get by, the vast majority are harmless or nearly so, and my home destroyed some of their habitat. I think, "How would I want a more powerful being to treat me if the roles were reversed?" But there are times, such as a cockroach infestation, when stronger measures are practically unavoidable.
