Personal Ensign - 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff + Post Race & Interviews

Спорт

Personal Ensign electrified the crowd by rallying from an apparently hopeless deficit to nail Winning Colors in the final stride and end her perfect career with a narrow triumph in the Distaff for fillies.
The victory, her 13th and narrowest in 13 career starts, won her a long standing ovation from the fans. The last American runner who retired undefeated after a full career was Colin in 1908.
Winning Colors, who won the Kentucky Derby last May, opened an easy early lead as Personal Ensign was trapped in traffic. Winning Colors sprinted away from the field into the stretch and Personal Ensign's chances looked slim as she still had four lengths to make up with a furlong to go. Widest of all under Randy Romero, she was gaining with every stride, but still needed a brilliant late surge to score by a long nose.
Personal Ensign raced the mile and an eighth in 1:52 over the muddy track and paid $3 for $2 to win as the favorite.
Personal Ensign, a 4-year-old daughter of Private Account and Grecian Banner, was bred by her owner, Ogden Phipps, and is trained by Shug McGaughey. She now goes off to Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., where she will be bred to Mr. Prospector next spring.
Winning Colors, who would have given Lukas a third straight training victory for the day, was gallant in defeat and finished half a length in front of Goodbye Halo to lock up the 3-year-old filly championship.

Personal Ensign was one of the greatest fillies to ever run. It took a beast to beat Winning Colors that day. Randy rode a great race and was just Incredibly on point that day. She was one of the best in the sport.

"To be a jockey is to be an athlete" Virgilio Decan "Aly Khan" (July 13, 1931 - ) Venezuelan retired horse racing caller. "I´m very sick, but I haven´t give up. I know God is going to be with me no matter what. And I know prayers help" Randy Romero (December 22, 1957 - August 29, 2019) Probably those were the last words Randy Paul Romero told to the press last June when he was in a hospice care victim of a cancer. And undoubtedly he proved to us to be an exceptional athlete and a very courageous man. Romero suffered an estimated of 25 fractures in racing accidents, but he returned to the track with the same enthusiasm. Now he is in a place where there is no pain and suffering. God bless him! My condolences to his family and his friends from Venezuela.

"Like Personal Ensing, the career of her jockey, Randy Romero, was infused with great courage. Romero was severely burned in an accident in a hot box at Oaklawn Park in 1983, and broke just about every bone of his body in a series of riding accidents. But he willed himself to come back time and time again. On Breeder's Cup Championship Day in 1988, Romero and Personal Ensing were number one" Jay Privman, Breeder's Cup, Page 177, Moonlight Press

The three most exciting races I have seen were Secretariat's Belmont, Zenyatta's Classic and this race. Winning Colors had everything her way - lose on the lead on a sloppy, speed favoring track. But the best horse won and derservedly so.

Dr. Fager wasn't really a sprinter. If there was a Breeder's Cup Classic in 1968 he would have run in it and won it. He won the United Nations at 1 3/16, the Whitney at 1 1/8, the Suburban at 1 1/4, the Californian at 1 1//16, Hawthorne Gold Cup at 1 1/4, Sweep Classic at 1 1/4, the Rockingham Special at 1 1/8, and went across the wire first in the Jersey Derby at 1 1/8 before being taken off the board.

You have to call Dr. Fager a miler, not a sprinter. If he was actually a 6-7 furlong horse; he would hold all world records. He is the only horse in history to clock under 1.08, under 1.21, under 1.33 and under 2.00. and the only horse to carry 130+ in those times. He is the only horse to hold a world record with 130[existing]. From seeing his races live, i can attest that he was "easy" at the 1/6th pole in all but 3 races.

It's too bad that Personal Ensign's damsire/broadmare sire, Hoist the Flag, had to retire due to an injury, after only 6 starts and never got to be in a Triple Crown race. He was like her, he "never finished behind another horse". His only "loss" was from a disqualification. Seattle Slew's jockey, Jean Cruguet, thought that Hoist the Flag was better than Seattle Slew. Given how great Personal Ensign was, that may have been true.

Please try to learn more about horse racing history. Pretty Polly, Sceptre, Ruffian, Shuvee, Alciabiates, Laby's Secret, Black Caviar, Makybe Diva, Goldikova, Zenyatta, Dawn Run (what...steeplechase is not racing to you?),...and, perhaps the greatest of all time, Kinscem. You need to consider those great racers who have competed at the very highest levels and shown the top performances against males. Personal Ensign never competed in the Met Mile, the Melbourne Cup, the Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Ascot Gold Cup or the Breeders' Cop Classic. If she had, in any of these races, then she would not have finished her career undefeated. My apologies for missing here several greats of the past whose names I cannot immediately recall, in a reasonable time for this comment to be placed.

"Como personal Ensing, la carrera de su jinete, Randy Romero, fue insuflada con gran coraje. Romero fue quemado severamente a raíz de un accidente en un sauna en Oaklawn Park en 1983, y se rompió casi cada hueso de su cuerpo en una serie de rodadas. Pero se sobrepuso para volver una y otra vez. En el día de las Copas de Criadores 1988, Romero y Personal Ensign fueron los Número 1" Jay Privman, Breeders' Cup, página 177. Moonlight Press

TheProfessorOfLife Dr Fager was MUCH more than a sprinter. He was just getting warmed up at 6 furlongs. He ran 2 sub 2 minute 1 1/4 races against the great Damascus. His perfect distance would be 1-1 1/8 miles. Virtually unbeatable by any horse who ever lived at that distance.
