Or: several mysterious points in the human psyche and how to coexist with our self-loathing selves. The first part of the film presents to us the qualities of Alma as a woman with past experiences and lacks self-confidence. This film asks many critical thinking questions.

Well done. In my viewing of "Persona", I focused on the women, the story and feeling of pain, and of the torment of confession. The characters are trying to reveal, who am I? But when exploring that, there's the realizing of horrible things, which can be done to others (the boy for instance). Is it better not to know? To always live in denial? And that leads to the imagery of film/a person cracking up; of life as a lie, a joke.

Great video as always! Btw, I don't know if it was intentional but Alma means soul and it's ironic that one of the characters has that name.

Profound insight on this deliciously layered piece of art. However, was I the only one that laughed at the way he says "All hell breaks loose" at 8:27? It's like he said it the way I was thinking it after having watched that preceding section.

Hey Thomas, I enjoyed this analysis of the Persona film, but I wanted to express one issue I had with your examination of this film. I think you mistaken the themes of Modernism with Post-Modernism. Post- Modernism focuses more on subverting culture and the fragmentation of society. Modernism has a relatively more traditional perspective on culture along with viewing society as more unified. Another thing to mention is that Persona was released around the time of the early Post- Modernist period(1966) where modernism is typically agreed upon ends around the time of the end of WW2.

In this case we have to mark the difference between history and the form of art.. In historical context 1966 is postmodernism, but this film has pure modernist aesthetics (Crisis of identity, fragmentation, irrationality).. Time doesn't determine genre that you are making (we can say that most of the modernism ended after WW2 but not cinema).. + cinema is late phenomenon and it doesn't have big historical background to lie on so we cannot judge genres as easily as you suggest...
