You guys have gone completely retarded with that nostalgia bs lol. P3R is better in every aspect. "oh but the vibes". This is one has it's own cool vibe and this is not a bad thing or worse thing.
While reload definitely is petty and have better facial and body animations, however I love the stylized melancholy and dark shadow of the original. Like for example I prefer the introduction of the velvet room in the original then reload. So far my only problem of reload is that little too bright for the atmosphere compare to the original more dark and at menacing style.

@susantuna3434 same. I can't even vibe with the new music and the Velvet Room is the best it's been since Persona 2! But the style and atmosphere is just making me want to go back to PS2, even at 60 fps. I don't want to have to mod it to feel better about it, but that's probably what I'll end up doing. If it had the same love P5 had I'd be enjoying it a lot more
It's this weird situation where new art direction is the problem. The original was much more moody and atmospheric, you could feel the environment. The new one, whilst the characters themselves look much better, they don't seem to have much connection to their surroundings. The dorm is very bright now, compared to the gloom lighting of before, your dorm room is empty and flat, whilst in the original it feels like it has more detail and life to it (especially with the light flooding in through the open windows and the dust in the air).
@conspiracypanda1200

Kinda makes me want to get the PC files and do a texture overhaul. I can't mod, but I understand art and aesthetics. I think toning down the brightness and muddying the colours a little bit would go a long way to giving back the game's identity. Like, P3RE is _pretty,_ don't get me wrong, but the glitzy graphics fit the drama of the Phantom Thieves way better than it fits SEES, and even P5 had its dirty and cramped environments. This game needs to be toned down to something more visually melancholic for the sake of the characters and story.

Hmmm... I like the original more. The way that it's almost silent about the characters's thoughts like Yukari putting the gun to her head where it feels raw, gripping, and ruthless as you're wondering if she's going to do it or not and her panting. Over the Remake where she's talking about putting the gun to her head. It feels more telling than showing in the Remake where in the Original it was Showing instead of Telling and that told a lot. OG goes straight to the point and has a quiet sobering ambience to the scenes, you feel this isolation with the MC walking through the train station and on the subway. Remake takes it time to show the environment and how pretty it looks and happy everyone else and the MC walking about the day-to-day life. Comes out a little jarring. Even the opening with the Moon (almost horror like) and Sun (another day) is a good way of saying the difference between them are like night and day. Sure, the Remake's artwork is beautiful with more impressive details and designs but it comes off as too pretty and colorful for the kind of atmosphere that Persona 3 has and something feels lost spiritually because of it. Like they're trying to make it more like Persona 4 and 5 with how more full of light and colors they have where 3 wasn't like that. The way the MC just walks in the Dark Hour in the OG is haunting and his disinterest attitude where the Remake they go out of the Animated Cutscene and him not really reacting even a little. Walking through the bloody puddle in the OG is missing from the Remake. They're little changes, but it does say a lot about atmosphere. Even the music and sound direction. Felt more ominous and foreboding in the OG. I do like how signing your name in the Remake looks. Cool and stylish and gets into instead of a simply HUD screen. Also, the old artstyle works so well to convey that gritty reality in 3 so well with how the characters are drawn and express themselves.

One change that really bugs me is when Minato first uses the Evoker. In the OG even he struggles to pull the trigger, it can be seen as symbolic but also he has no idea about this world of personas. All he knows is that Yukari tried to use it to fight this monster but he could just as well be shooting himself in the head. In the remake there's none of that, he just accepts everything and does it with no struggle.

I never played the original Persona 3, but in my humblest opinion, Reload’s cutscenes are way better. While I do think the mood and grim tone gave the og its identity, Reload’s cutscenes are better in conveying what is happening onscreen. The older cutscenes constantly have these close-ups of people’s faces, billboards, and clocks that it’s difficult to tell what is happening sometimes. Along with the constant dips to black and cut-ins of symbolic imagery, I often get confused on what am I supposed to be focusing on. If the camera was at a wider angle, I would’ve actually liked some of these cutscenes. Reload’s cutscenes have wider and consistent shots (both 2D and 3D) that are easier to comprehend and by default are more enjoyable to watch. Although I will say, the shots of Orpheus and Thanatos in the original look way better. They just come off more savage and off putting than how Reload handled it. Honestly, if Makoto’s awakening was done in 2D, both personas would have been even more terrifying.
@samuel.jpg.1080p

@@alexquah784 fair enough, I think the some shots in the original can be hard to follow. @alexquah784 So theres an interesting thing about Reload’s scene with the Protagonist’s Awakening. They tried to recreate the P3 Movie Awakening. And it was doomed to fail the moment they were recreating it in 3D. The Movie Awakening had great and dynamic shots with excellent sound design. The movement of the characters was strong and fluid, they didn’t look like they were stiff / forced to move. Now I don’t know why they even bothered because trying to emulate a scene from 2D animation won’t look beautiful (when there is no love put into it). They really should’ve taken the scene in a different direction, that way people wouldn’t have judged it as much. With all that said, Portable still has the worst P3 Awakening by far. Official tier list goes as follows: 1. P3 Movie 2. P3 / FES 3. P3 Reload 4. P3 Portable

Honestly this. I've never played the original, and the Reload versions of everything just look and feel so much better to me. That original opening cutscene feels very meandering and slow, with too many unnecessary cuts to random, irrelevant people and scenes, while the new one just tells you everything you need to know with much better pacing. Likewise the environment lighting lets me actually see what's going on, while if I played the original game I would probably find myself having to turn up the brightness or closing the curtains in my living room so I can see anything. Honestly, for me, playing the old version would be a massive step down in quality in just about every conceivable way.

Not really. Considering the answer is coming to P3R, there’s literally no reason to play FES or Portable anymore. Regardless though Portable is still worse for being on far inferior hardware.
I much prefer the OG P3’s anime art direction over P3R’s. It was from before digital animation took off so it still uses flat cell shaded color palettes and very little highlighting in the hair and stuff. Very reminiscent of old early 2000’s and 90’s anime like Evangelion.

@@mexodroid1848 well that because new generation gamer don't like ps2 lighting most of them prefer bright lighting rather than gloomy lighting
while i think p3re is a step up from the original, the thing that's definitely lacking the most is the art direction. i think the character portraits are gorgeous, but it really feels as if they sacrificed the gritty and despondent atmosphere that the original had. everything is way too bright in this game, including the ui like the textbox (like why is it that vibrant blue? it doesn't look good with a lot of the environments...) i loved the dull tones in the original game because it perfectly reflects how the MC viewed the world. plus, the original opening cutscene had a really overwhelming, loud and bustling feeling in the city that was almost painful to watch vs how beautiful and busy the city is in reload. and there's the whole added dialogue to yukari trying to use the evoker, which when i first watched it i found to be really unnecessary because the whole tenseness from that scene was over how it looks like this random girl is literally about to off herself in silence (aside from her panting and the running water), constantly contrasting with the obnoxious liveliness of the city. also i get 3d animation is less expensive and also easier than 2d, but i felt like changing the scene of the MC awakening his persona lost a lot of its coolness(? edginess?) because of the 3d animation, that imo i wasn't really a fan of. he didn't really hesitate as much as he did in the original--he was clearly shaking because for all he knew, he was just holding a gun that he was about to literally shoot himself with. the 2d animation of thanatos also felt a lot more ruthless than the 3d one. i feel like p3re didn't make it seem as serious as it should've been...
Both are good, Reload improved graphics and character details and expression but for the original j love hos they emphasize the weight of the atmosphere, the whole animation felt...idk unsettling
Going to go against what everyone is saying and say that Reload (mostly) looks better than the original. Besides the dorm room and a few smaller details, Reload just looks much cooler in my opinion, keeping gloomy colors (again, minus exceptions like the dorm room) but also looking flashier. The original scenes and graphics don't look that polished in my opinion, they almost look more like a beta or test version in some cases (like the battle UI).

Yeah and if they really wanted to get into the mood, the game provides you the option of changing your brightness setting as many of the complaints about this game is how bright it is especially indoors. But that's only the default setting because it's been standardized for all players, including the ones who've never played the original. With that said, the thing I can agree on are that the anime cut scenes being less stylized but that's also been standardized for the modern audience which can't be help since that's the trajectory Atlus is aiming for when it comes to their games.

Well, times change, so do audiences. And it is well, normal for remakes, that they alter things. Some people like it, some people dislike it. Personally I love Reload's artystyle and direction. It is way more modern while also having oldschool vibe with the setting. P1, P2 and P3 orginals were indeed more sinister and spooky in their vibe, but with P4G they changed the pace and mood to take Persona into different direction, with P5 being its peak. They clearly tried to apply this to P3, while also retaining some core characteristics and I think it went out really well on the middle ground. Remakes are always a double edged sword. You want to apply to both old and new players with different perspectives and ideas how this should look like.
for some reason despite all that original shortcoming and less anime styled gameplay(like the dumb AI or something my friend says) i prefer it over the reload especially the anime FMV cutschene instead of in engine cutschene
The graphics are leagues better in P3R, though I think they definitely missed out on the atmosphere of the original in its cinematics.

The opening was so much better paced and directed in the original. The shots were a lot more interesting there, too. The close ups, dutch angles and warped perspectives worked really well for it, Reload's looks really flat by comparison. I also just prefer the character design and shading in the original, it reminds me a lot of Lain.
I wish they made the cutscenes animations and darker
Of the many things that can be said about Persona 3 Reload, there is no denying the the quality of the animations is way better.
I think the og looks better . Don't get me wrong the reload looks amazing but just the gritty look of the og is what add character to it . The reload just looks like persona 5 but with persona 3 overlaying it
The remake was amazing but I still choose to original

Even though I only played reload so far, I'll say I wish it had the atmosphere of the original, something spookier and more unnerving.
My problem with the persona 3 reloas cutscenes are the honestly boring cinematography. The original had some amazingly dynamic shots that really brought out the eeriness of its environment, and the violence of the initial awakening scene. This combined with the more contrasting colours worked so incredibly well. Although, I never personally liked the environmental aspects of the original, because it was personally quite boring, aside from the dorm room.
I think the og anime cutscene is still holds up, even better sometimes. It has a lot of 90s and 2000 VHS anime energy when computers hasn't able to support 2D animators well enough, had to go fully your hands painting on celluloid sheets. Yes they couldn't compare to modern animations on lighting, realistic and smoothness. But the darker mood, simplicity on colors, or pause and flash over the scenery are perfectly fits persona 3's story vibe.
@d-o-k-i

I actually agree. Animators on older projects sometimes had to be really creative to get around the technological limitations. IMO, that could make for some gripping art. Not to say all modern animation is bad haha, I don’t think that.
The scene where Makoto opens the door and it shows the shot of the big ass moon reminds me of Re4 or resident evil openings in general
The opening cutscene in the original is brillant and unique. In the remake it's really classic
what I loved about the OG P3 was it was simply... gritty. it wasn't trying to be pretty unlike P3R. It intentionally made its animation like that to set the tone of the game... the game is supposed to be really really gritty and dark and just flat out uncomfortable.... pretty much what death is about. dark and uncomfortable to see and experience. P3R looks so generic. its literally devolved into just another anime game... instead of an experience of living a life that ends in suic!de

While I agree with you that the atmosphere is weaker. To me persona 3's greatest strength was the darker atmosphere and story that still felt like an SMT game with dating sim elements. Whereas persona 4 and persona 5 don't really feel like SMT games to me (though are still great). P3R artstyle makes it look like persona 5. The story is still great. And gameplay is much improved. So i disagree that it's not just another anime game, because it's still better than 99% of them. But the atmosphere is quite a bit weaker, :-/. So from a story perspective, it's not the best way to play this game.
The fact the movie adaptation is better than the reload cutscenes show that it isn't hard to be faithful and have a higher production value.
The original Persona 3 opening is heavily inspired by Serial Experiments Lain, which the director was probably a fan of. The new opening really lacks that influence, and so lacks the dark and heavy atmosphere of the original.

I think the original cutscenes had a better setup, simple things like not remaining on one picture for too long etc. it just came off as more disturbing and dark, but Reload definitely looks better graphics wise. I'm just glad they kept the blood in the awakening scene.
I think they did a good job with the in game awakening scene, although it wouldve been cool to see it with updated 2D animation. Also I wish they kept the heartbeat before Makoto used the evoker. Opening scene is so much better in original. Like the cuts between different parts of the environment and cutting in and out to burn my dread last battle was so unnerving and one hell of a memorable start to a game, and it's a lot more bland and straightforward how it's done in Reload. There's like no artistic direction like there was in the original. Like they did not need to make Yukari say those lines basically explaining what she's thinking, when it was conveyed so much better without it, and made it feel much more real and intense.
I'll just say that the first cutscene in fes version was just peak, while Reload lacks a lot of thing, and I mean A LOT.
I do love the improved textures and environments, but there’s something oddly appealing about the low-poly and damp colored models the OG provided.
Gameplay and graphics wise i prefer Reload but Cinematics wise I prefer the og by a long shot
I like the fact that the og is more creepy and dark 'cause it match with the story but I'm glad I played the reload, I really love the art style, the soundtrack and also the mood, they did a great job making it more appealing. I know people loves the og version but I think has aged badly
theres somethin g so unsetling in the minuscule eyes of the og, i had forgotten a lot about it
this is what happens when you try to put a "modern" spin on an old game and you don't involve any of the original staff reload is utterly lacking in direction. it's unfortunate that this is gonna be the standard impression of p3 going forward
I kinda like the original, as dated as it was. There’s just something about the grittiness of 2000s anime cutscenes just adds to the dark tone of P3.
The old has more Drama/ darkness and i still Like the Animation Cut Scenes. But the new is Beautyfull too.
Style wise and anime cutscenes i like og more, color wise and seeing the gameplay i like the reload more
Reload definitely should have used 2d animation during the first fight. The 3d animation just looks goofy such as Orpheus transforming into Thanatos and when it crushes the arm of the shadow.
The opening in the first version is more based than the remake
I love how original P3 valvet room's background blinks
I love the OG creepiness and weirder vibes
as an animation person, i really wish persona had more fluid transitions into each other, makes everything feel more alive and natural
I love this game its my first time playing it I never played the original but I'm enjoying the remake I never played a game like this before My favorite game so far in 2024 never thought I would get really into it but its hard to put down the controller because how good it is
I love how polished reloads visuals are but i absolutley hate how it lost the original game's artstyle and the feel of the original game's cutscenes.
Reload is absolutely better in my opinion but I still really love the look of the ps2 version. When I see that opening play all of the sudden I'm fifteen again, downloading this random anime game called P3fes onto my ps3 not knowing how much it would actually shape how I interact with video games. Even though Reload is the best way to play it nowadays, I very firmly believe that the ps2 version's visuals still hold up super well.
Both openings are definitely a product of their time. Reload is pretty clean and is CG by todays anime standards. The original on the other hand, really reminds you of the rough and hand drawn anime of the early and mid 2000s. One that comes to mind is Boogiepop Phantom and many other anime during that time.
The original opening scene is definitely creepier and more atmospheric than the remake. Also Yukari's "Who's there ?" sounds a lot more dramatic .The whole build up is more tense and menacing in the OG despite the low budget animation.
Glad to see I am not alone. The opening cutscene changes stood out immediately. While they are not bad, compared to the old animated cutscenes they failed to capture the same raw emotion P3 and P3 FES had. Thankfully as I continued, this was overshadowed by the additions Atlus has added to the game. SEES members feel a lot more fleshed out from the OG, and the newer scenes that they added are solid. I hope they do The Answer well in future DLC or rerelease as Atlus loves to do.
i played version for psp and had no idea its actually supposed to be full 3d wow
Honestly P3 FES looked a lot blurry and the cutscenes for me, i Honestly prefer seeing the characters and scenes clearly, as as the lighting fits the mood. I Honestly don't mind the brightwe for the real world, it makes the world feel more real, compared to FES/P4. I like the lighting for the time of day. The darker elements are still there in Tartarus, which fits for what it is. That's just i personally feel about it. I haven't seen all of reload, so far it looks like an amazing remake.
The 3d looks nice but I'm kinda sad they replaced so many of the 2d animated cinematics with 3d ones. They're easier to animate, I know, but the 2d just looks so mucn better to me
it feels a lot nicer to play reload but it feels like they didn’t understand what made the cutscenes good

01:40 Persona 3 OST - Burn My Dread Last Battle 05:45 The Truth
I freakin' knew that Reload gonna be awesome everywhere... except cutscene direction... *Sigh*
The remake seems to be underutilizing the camera angles to create a sense of unease at the beginning. When the camera is far away from the protagonist's face, it creates the feeling of otherworldliness. The lighting is also at times a bit... Too bright. There should be less light sources with different colors for mood building. In your room, there should be more orange and red light coming from the windows to signal morning, and blues signaling night. One thing that's way better are the character designs and some individual scenes. Pharos looks really goofy in the original, and the roof cutscene has pretty bad pacing in the original. Some of the camera angles were weird, where both Yuuka and MC's faces don't fit into the same frame. The composition of the scene where Yuuka got hit by the shadow was also kind of unclear in the og.
OG has a better atmosphere but reload made exploring tartarus more fun and less of a hassle so i think they did a pretty good job with this remake
70€
Honestly my only issue is that yukari speaks in the opening, the stuff she says is exactly what the viewer can see and it’s so much more unnerving when there’s no dialogue
I know in ATLUS games of recent years, they've had much better Yukari character models compared to the more simple versions we had for the original PS2 era Persona 3 and P3:Portable. That said, Yukari's model in Reload is *amazing*. She was already my favorite companion in P3 and a perfect friend for FemC in P3:Portable. She looks fantastic here. I still can't get over the voice actor change for Akihiko with the English one. The old one had this cool and very distinct voice.
I see they remove the iconic "burn my breaaaaaaddddd" song.
Whoa, seeying this just makes me appreciate more how polished the original was for the time, the battle animations and anime cutscenes specially for me. I mean, Reload looks great, but the original was so far ahead at it's time. As good as Reload is, it's not as "impressive", let's say. I'm loving reload anyways.
