Persimmon Tree Harvest | Care | Varieties
Charles Malki, Biologist & Plant Expert from ivorganics.com/ discusses persimmon tree care, the differences between astringent & non astringent varieties, and the importance of coating pruned branches that are exposed as well as damage to the bark that generally protects the "heart wood" on branches and trunk. This video was taken from a backyard orchard in Walnut Creek, California-- A Bay Area City! :)

You bring such joy and information to gardening! Just harvested many persimmons off our tree and learned a lot about pruning it in Jan/Feb. Our persimmons have to become soft to eat so I usually peel them and trim all the edible fruit off, then mash and freeze them. Use throughout the year in muffins, smoothies, etc. The IV organic is a prevention product I really like. Thanks for sharing!

It is also grown in Welcome Bay New Zealand. I pick & grade for export. Harvest season from mid May 3rd week of May. Best to pick is when it is yellow orange. Do not pick yellowish/greenish color.
I've read a few books about pruning and can add a tip to this video. You don't want to cover the cambium tissue with any stuff. Doing so will prevent the tree from healing and closing the wound. This is so important that now department of agriculture decided to discourage everyone from sealing the wounds. So what you need to remember is apply the sealant carefully and leave the cambium ring alone. Second thing i can add is if there's a tear on the side of the tree use a chisel and try to make the wound look like a lens (). Do it with least amount of damage possible and you don't have to cut the bark to exact shape of a lens. If wood is infested with decease like fungi you need a more experienced guy to handle it since it might be necessary to remove parts of the wood and fungicide before sealing the wood with a product.

Thanks for the tips. Last year I cleared an acre of wooded land and this year a see a gazillion persimmons starting. Mostly new trees. A few are new growths from stumps that were cut. I had no idea they were here but now I feel like I hit the jackpot. So, I’m trying to learn how to care for them. Some I will have to dig up and give away. Any tips on transplanting them?

Can you graft 2 kind persimmons into one tree? Does it need 8 hours full sun or shaded area? Beetles are grubs damage all roots and young tree barks.
If I want to plant a fruit tree on my property that is on lower ground and next to my neighbor who puts non organic fertilizer on his grass, can I put my fruit tree in a container before putting into the ground so it's somewhat protected from the ground that may have some fertilizer due to my ground is lower than his? I am in zone 7b and thought about planting my fruit trees in containers but I don't want to move them indoor or not sure if they can survive the winter being in a container outdoor. Thanks.

I decided to remove all of the lower branches from my persimmon trees, everything below 6'. The coyotes were eating the fruit from the lower branches and leaping up and biting any fruit below 6', all of the fruit had bite marks and was being damaged. The coyotes were breaking the branches as they struggled to reach more fruit. I was worried the tree trunk would be broken and the whole tree lost from the coyote activity. I saw similar coyote damage in jujube and peach trees. Coyotes eat a lot of my fruit.

Hello bubayou, According to Tom Spellman, spokes person for the Dave Wilson Nursery (one of the largest fruit tree distributors in the country) he said at a prior lecture that all fruit trees will perform better in-ground, better than in pots.... with the exception of blueberries. I too would recommend that you go directly into in-ground planting, where you tree will grow faster, with stronger & better stretched & anchored roots. Unless, the tree is really small, say less than 1-2 feet... there can be advantages to keeping the tree off the ground where pests such as snails, rabbits, etc, can consume the tree before it has a chance to become anything. Here is that Tom Spellman lecture: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f52m1apxaZe3c7Q.html (go to 32:05) Charles :-)

Hello Michael, For your persimmon, as well as most fruit trees, they are most active (growing, fruiting, etc) in the spring, summer and fall-- So feed your trees with an organic granular (which breaks down over 2-4 months) in the spring, summer and early fall. No need to fertilize in the winter when the plants metabolism is the slowest. Other good practices include deep watering, and allowing the soil to dry (never bone dry) between watering, mulching, and pruning in the late winter (after chance of frost has past) and again in the middle of the growing season (such as early summer) to manage size and maximize strong (not leggy branches) that will support the blooms and fruits the following year. Keep me posted on your persimmon tree success!!! Charles :-)

@@IVOrganic Sir, mine are too vigorous and the fruits keep dropping. I had no choice but do a heading cut when the leader of one tree grew to 9ft on its second year. I aimed to maintain five main branches but ended up with three leaders shooting to outer space. Now seven more branches are following those rockets-wanna-be. My trees are two to seven years old and I only fertilized them once a year with vermicast. If only I can eat the suckers like vegetables, then I don't have to grow moringa trees. If it hasn't made fruit by now it won't! It was probably started from a runner off the main tree and they NEVER make fruit. Go buy another tree or two if you want fruit. I hope this helps.

You said to be sure to feed the trees in spring, summer and fall with an organic granular fertilizer for fruit trees. Does it mean to feed them 3 times a year? Thank you kindly.
@IVOrganic

Hello Kitacheeta, Congratulations on the purchase of your persimmon farm!! YUMMY! What variety (ies) are your growing? About feeding, it is recommend that you fertilize your trees with an organic granular fertilizer lightly spring and fall, with the most important feeding being in the summer.... with very little to no care (feeding-wise) during the winter months. The reason for the heavier summer feeding is because the plant is most active with the longest and warmest hours of sun... hence the most active metabolism. I do not have a company I can recommend for fertilizers, however, I am sure you will be able to negotiate a wholesale price with one of the distributors. Please keep me posted on the success of your persimmon orchard! Charles :-)

Hello Maggie Cheung Blaize, Persimmons do grow in growing zones 7-10, and if you were to only plant one, I would recommend the Fuyu variety which is self pollinating. However, having another (different) variety by your Fuyu will help both trees support even better quality, larger and heavier yields of fruit! With regards to your figs, did you plant one variety or multiple varieties-- Hopefully you planted a diverse selection of figs as some may perform better depending on soil. light and fertility, Figs do best with annual pruning of about 30-70% annually once the last chance of frost has passed, but before the buds begin to grow; which should be late February in your area. Please keep me posted on your growing successes!!! Charles :-)

One of the most popular and least expensive ways of getting persimmon trees is as a bare-root tree. Available in early spring at a nursery or garden section of the hardware store. Bare-root trees are only available for a month or two, so keep an eye out for their availability. Better would be to ask the clerk when they are scheduled to be in stock, then mark your calendar for the event. Persimmon trees are usually more expensive than the other trees (peaches, plums, apples, etc...) so be prepared for the sticker shock. Buy as soon as they are in stock so you can pick the best one.
