From this region, Cyrus the Great advanced to defeat the Medes, Lydia, and the Neo-Babylonian Empire, establishing the Achaemenid Empire. Alexander the Great, an avid admirer of Cyrus the Great, conquered most of the empire by 330 BC. Upon Alexander's death, most of the empire's former territory fell under the rule of the Ptolemaic Kingdom and Seleucid Empire, in addition to other minor territories which gained independence at that time. The Iranian elites of the central plateau reclaimed power by the second century BC under the Parthian Empire. The Achaemenid Empire is noted in Western history as the antagonist of the Greek city-states during the Greco-Persian Wars and for the emancipation of the Jewish exiles in Babylon. The historical mark of the empire went far beyond its territorial and military influences and included cultural, social, technological and religious influences as well. Despite the lasting conflict between the two states, many Athenians adopted Achaemenid customs in their daily lives in a reciprocal cultural exchange, some being employed by or allied to the Persian kings. The impact of Cyrus's edict is mentioned in Judeo-Christian texts, and the empire was instrumental in the spread of Zoroastrianism as far east as China. The empire also set the tone for the politics, heritage and history of Iran (also known as Persia).

Some people think that the middle east is just 1 culture, but it's not! Zoroastrianism was the religion of the Persians for centuries, the worlds oldest monotheistic religion. People are always slagging off Muslims, but some "Christians" are horrible too. If your not a C*** then I don't care where your from. Persia is AWESOME! I LOVE Persians! I used to live in a country only a few miles away from Iran called Oman! I wouldn't want to go to Iran today because of the government, but I have absolutely no issue with Persia or the majority of Iranian/ Persian people!

@Lord Voldemort Persian is a loose word that is used by many people and in their perspective it may refer only to the royal Persian clan but actually it refers to all Iranians that have been living in Iranian Plateau including Medes in west and Parthians in north and also people in the Mesopotamian area. These are all the people of Iranian origin among which the Persian and Parthian royal clans ruled the whole region in three empires that had been made by the hands of all Iranians not only Persians. Although today some Arab countries constitute the west part of Iran Plateau, the Arab population has been created after Islam in those areas. The capital of the Sasaian empire was right in Iraq. The reason that ancient Romans and Greeks called all Iranians Persian was because of the fame and status of the Persian rulers. Indeed it was the Persians who could unite the whole vast area of west Asia under one flag and one empire for the first time and when western historians mentioned Persian in their sources, they simply meant Iranian in what is today known as Greater Iran.

@Lord Voldemort Exactly, just like Sir Isaac Newton described for himself, Cyrus "stood on the shoulders of giants" and thus became an even grander giant himself- building on what came before and further centralizing (although still decentralized by more recent standards) and improving (continued by Cambysses' conquest of Egypt, and Darius' stabilization) it to create the first global power that was more than just a powerful city state with a few regional vassals.
