Pershing Lecture Series: Embattled Weimar, 1920 - Dr. Scott Stephenson

Featuring distinguished U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Department of Military History lecturers and authors, the Museum and Memorial is proud to host the Pershing Lecture Series, which fosters understanding of World War I and its impact on the law, international policy and culture of today.
By 1920, it seemed Germany’s first democratic government might endure. Under the leadership of Friedrich Ebert, the new Weimar Republic had weathered the storms of revolutionary violence that rocked Germany after the end of World War I. But in March 1920, the republic faced an attack from the radical right - the Kapp Putsch - and the radical left - the Ruhr Uprising. Join Dr. Scott Stephenson of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College to explore how the two assaults highlighted the fragility of Germany’s tentative experiment with democracy. Interesting to see a part of history that seems to have faded into obscurity.

It's too much of a change in too short a time scale. Can anyone name a country where the transition from absolute power to democracy went smoothly? (I said a country, a colony rebelling and forming a country afresh doesn't count...)

And even among seceding colonies a civil war usually follows their secession, either immediately (Ireland, India) or after a generation or two (US of A).
