Pernik: Historic Bulgarian City

In the 4thc BCE a Thracian fortress was founded on the site of the Medieval Bulgarian fortress of Krakra. Greek, Roman, and Byzantine occupations of the site followed in the succeeding centuries.
In the 11cAD it had become the sited of a fortified town under the legendary Bulgarian governor Krakra of Pernik.
Krakra successfully defended Pernik against two Byzantine sieges - one in 1004AD and the other in 1016AD.
After the Ottoman occupation, Pernik lost its significance and became a small backwater settlement.
The beginning of Perniks modern history started in the 19thc when it became the center of coal and industrialization.
