    @@benrobbo2902 Whitaker was miles ahead of RJJ as far as technique and pure boxing IQ. RJJ had the athleticism, but not the technique or IQ to match Whitaker. Something that became apparent as RJJ hit his 30s.

    To my opinion I've been watching boxing over 40 years and Pernell Sweet Pea Whitaker was the best defensive fighter and had an excellent chin to this day even better than Floyd Mayweather because Pernell Whitaker engaged and would go toe-to-toe with you he wood box with you and brawl too Mayweather runs all the time .and all these other up and coming Fighters but Pernell Whitaker to me was the best defensive fighter all around pound for pound. I miss watching Whitaker that type of skill and that type of guts you don't see that anymore in today's Fighters he would always be the best defensive fighter in my humble opinion and the experience of watching fights and being a former fighter myself Pernell Sweet Pea Whitaker the best of all time. Then Hector Macho Camacho then Wilfredo Benitez then Mayweather jr defensive wise.

    In Whitaker's era there was only one p4p and his name was Julio Cesar Chavez. I followed boxing unbiasedly for 35 yrs and can say that no fighter in the world from 1985-90 was more feared than "JC Superstar", not even Mike Tyson. The Duva's never thought twice about putting Whitaker in the ring with Chavez in the '80's when Chavez was at his peak and Whitaker not once called Chavez out or challenged him. Chavez had to evacuate the 135 lb division after dismantling Rosario (another fighter Whitaker curiously never even tried to negotiate a fight with ?) to find bigger green. Love Chavez or hate him this is the truth. It wasn't until 1993, not 1988, that Whitaker finally was willing to get in bed with Chavez and not at 135, not at 140, but at 147....a weight Chavez had never fought in and could never naturally grow into. Nothing against Whitaker but it's time we put his "robbery" draw against Chavez and his proper place in p4p talk from his era into perspective. Keep it real.

    Actually Jacob's gave Pernell problems because as a natural southpaw , orthodox fighters have a disadvantage of all the little details they face but Jacob's was a natural southpaw also so the little quirks that southpaws naturally have didn't work but Pernell still won but Pernell got tagged more than I ever saw against Jacobs.

    Sweet pea the man, the Trinidad fight might be great if it happen two years earlier, but a Dela Hoya match was so huge for Whitaker to resists, the only fight missing in his resume is Ike Quartey, Well I think he beats Terry Norris and pretty entertaining for Pea beating up the late Hector Camacho, from the story I remember they bumped into each other and Pernell really got irked on the macho man.

    Floyd clearly had the better career, as for a fight between them to me it would be 50-50, maybe I'd slightly favour Floyd because of his size advantage, but slick southpaws like Whitaker (or today Rigondeaux) are the hardest guys to fight, period.

    Pernell was one of the best, but to say that "no one"? That ego is way too big. Loma, Mayweather, and there two others that come to my mind that have mastered that style. Just one of the best. Putting Pernell against Mayweather, I think Mayweather will edge him. I mean De la Hoya and Trinidad made him look ordinary, why would Mayweather not do the same?

  • @doctor8830

    @doctor8830

    Mars Flee Pernell schooled De La Hoya and kept up with a young Trinidad (Pernell was on his way out btw) Loma and Mayweather have different styles to Pernell even though it was inherited by Pernell and Pernell beats up Mayweather any day of the week and twice on Sunday

    Lol stupid Comment, one Pernell Whitaker was not in his prime when he fought Oscar and he still made Oscar look silly, Oscar was 23 while Pernell was 10 years older, and Oscar said that was one his toughest fights, because of Pernell skills. come on really you brought up Trinidad who was like 24,who fought Whitaker when he had no legs 🦵. Lol Trinidad farther Trinidad Sr. Wanted to fight Pernell at the time because he came off a year lay off and they knew Pernell Whitaker was partying hard around this time, so they essentially knew Pernell wasn’t going to have no legs 🦵even though Pernell been calling out Trinidad since 95 but they didn’t respond till 1999 when Pernell had no legs 🦵.Prime Pernell Whitaker was from 88 to 94. In 1992 he beat the stew out of Harold Brazier who beat Micky Ward, he beat the stew out of Rafael Pineda who at 40 years old in 2004 gave a very young Cory Spinks and Zab Judah a run for their money. But yet Back in 1992 Pernell Whitaker dominated a prime 25 year old Rafael Pineda who just came off a Roger May-weather KO. In 1995 Pernell move up in weight and beat Julio Vasquez who just came off a KO of a young Winky Wright. In 1991 he out boxed the great Azumah Nelson. I love LOMA but lets weight till he fight someone like Oscar. LOMA still have to prove himself. Mayweather is great but he never fought no one like Pernell, Zab Judah may be the closet but then again PERNELL WHITAKER AND ZAB JUDAH share a common opponent and that’s Rafael Pineda. Pernell Whitaker fought Rafael Pineda when Pineda was a champion and he dominated Rafael Pineda in 1992 while Zab Judah struggled against a 40 year old Rafael Pineda in 2004. So comparing Zab to Pernell is like comparing Floyd to Adrian Broner, but Floyd is proven and a great but lol I’ll give Oscar credit lol because he did give Floyd and Pernell a swollen eye 👁 which is rare to do against great defensive masters like Pernell and Floyd.
