I decided to go a different approach with a song, wanted to experiment with Frequency shifting and some other plugins I got recently. Most of the patterns were made within 30 minutes the rest was done over the course of an hour after that. I played with the arpeggiator and randomizer tools of FL Studio a little to get variation in the notes, I also used it for panning the arpeggiated pattern. This was merely a concoction of experimentation and curiosity.

Do you use scales? Because the melodies and chord progressions sound a bit chromatic. If you want to aim for a specific feeling with your chords and melodies you should try to use scales. Scales are a sequence of specific notes that you only allow yourself to use when writing a piece; in fl studio midi the on-scale notes are shown brighter and the off-scale notes are shown darker. To use scales for your melodies and chords you can click the top-left arrow on the midi ui, go to "view" then "scale highlights", for the scales to choose I suggest going with Major (Ionian) for brightness, Minor Natural (Aeolian) for darkness and maybe Minor Harmonic for gothic-ish darkness.

thanks for the advice, I am very new to this, but I was sticking to D# in the Ionian scale, then alternated into a different scale towards the end.
