India is a diverse nation with lots of culture, colour and perspectives. There are women who shudder to say the word period and independent single moms who do face adversity but will raise stronger women. I am an Indian. I have lived my whole life in India. But not even my Grandma feels embarrassed to talk about periods. I just wanted to say this cos I felt bad being in india for a sec.. And then I was like this is our country. We are diverse but we have the capability to help each other out. And there is nothing to feel ashamed of.

The people shown in this documentary are clearly from a rural area that is not developed at all. Not all indian girls are taught this is a sin . In fact I’m a normal girl just like you dude ..the only difference is that I live in my home country and you live elsewhere. What I’m trying to say is you’re not lucky just bcuz you were born in America. We’re lucky bcuz we were not born into poverty.

There are women who shudder to say the word period and independent single moms who do face adversity but will raise stronger women. I am an Indian. I have lived my whole life in India. No wonder why this girls are shy about it and don´t dare to ask for pads, the guy kinda judge me and the lady who help me was nice but she was also kinda awkward. But then again when I was visiting Kerala and all the pads were easy to find. It´s just diverse like you say.

Hey ash, I’m not sure if this is a good way to explain it , but back in the days where everyone was subjected to doing yoga and a lot prayers, women weren’t allowed to pray or touch those objects because they contained a lot of energy/ vibration due to the prayers, as a woman’s uterus is sensitive at this time of the month, they believed that the intense vibration and energy from prayers would disrupt the cycle and turn hormones upside down, but that was a long time ago. Nowadays not many people pay attention to prayers or religious, but still follow this ritual as a lack of understanding. My mother doesn’t let me enter the mandir at home as well because we still practice prayers seriously but she lets me go around the house , and since I only menstruate for 3 days, she lets me come to the temple/ touch religious objects after the period has ended as the uterus is less sensitive. As a someone in a super religious family, I’m glad that my mother is someone who only follows “superstitions” if they have a plausible explanation, and also the males on her side of the family are very understanding and know what a period is (to the point where I was surprised that not many men know about it ) so I feel comfortable around them.

The fight for gender equality is a big one and has many layers to it, sure women in rural areas do not enjoy such freedoms as women in cities do, we have a long way to go. But this doesn’t mean we should invalidate anyone’s eperiences by calling it “drama”.

I told my parents that my periods started. They were so happy that they called my uncle, aunt, grandparents and told about it. My brother didn't know about it. But I told him about it. Whenever I get cramps, my father and brother helped me alot. We talk about these in class as well. We learnt more about it in 8th class. Hey, I think the pads are relatively eco friendly, looks like they are made from just cotton and paper, so possibly biodegradable. If the women can be encouraged to dispose of them correctly, I think it could be ok. Not to mention that they are produced locally as small, community businesses, not by massive corporations. Also, in places where they have no access to clean water, disposable sanitary products would be far better than something that needs to be cleaned, like menstrual cups. Cloth pads are good options in themselves but not being able to clean them well enough, as discussed in the video, is why disposable products are encouraged.

In these modern times not being allowed to go to the temple during periods seems like being stopped from doing things, but such traditions usually have reasons. In olden times there were no pads at all and getting up early in the morning to do the prayer activities and such may have been difficult for the women. Not to mention other tasks like going to get water from wells and all. From what my dad told me, there was a custom for women on periods to stay in a corner of the house and not roam around to work. Now such methods aren't practical but in those close-knit societies neighbors would help out with tasks like cooking so the women could rest.
