Periander of Corinth: Great Ruler or Mad Tyrant?

Ойын-сауық

Periander is one of the seven sages of ancient Greece, a collective of rulers, thinkers and profoundly wise individuals who helped shape the world of Archaic Greece. Periander was born in Corinth, one of the most powerful city-states in Greece and became its ruler for over 40 years. Among the seven sages, he is by far the most controversial figure, since the sources either paint him as a depraved tyrant or a great ruler and leader.
All the Quotes of Periander of Corinth:
- Exercise is everything.
- To be quiet is a nice thing, to be arrogant and abusive, a dangerous one.
- Profit is shameful.
- Democracy is better than tyranny.
- Mischievous pleasures are mortal, while virtues are immortal.
- When you are happy, be modest, when you are unhappy, be sensible.
- One should not live a life in thrifty manner.
- Take care to make yourself worthy of your parents.
- Treat your friends the same way, both in their good times and in their misfortunes.
- Do not share with others secrets entrusted onto you.
- If you should abuse someone, do it on the basis that you will quickly become his friend.
- While you live, they should praise you, when you die, they should speak wel for you.
- Bypass whoever you personally feel as bad.
- Your laws should be old, your dinners fresh.
- Do not be happy by punishing those who commit errors, but you should also hinder those who are willing to commit them.
- Do not show your misfortune, otherwise you will give joy to your enemies.

The story about killing his wife and exiling his son reminded me of when Constantine the great basically murdered his wife and one of his sons. Of course Constantius later topped his dad in the whole murdering family members thing.

Souds like those who put him down were green with jealousy. He was a successful ruler, and probably rich for himself as well as his city state. No-one to take over though, so they all started quarreling and soon forgot his achievements. Then again maybe not!!!
