Yeah and that’s what makes him the greatest dancer in kpop because he has honed his craft so much that you can identify a Taemin move, many dancers are rarely able to achieve this no matter how good they are, which is something MJ was also able to do. Taemin should be extremely proud of himself.

@Harmon McCraw To be honest Taemin’s SuperM solo stages absolutely didn’t showcase his real potential - not because of him, but first I was never convinced about the choice of songs, granted Danger is absolutely iconic, but the second song should have been Move or Want (properly staged with both male and female dancers) and not Sayonara Hitori where he dances alone. And second what really bothered me the most was the constant use of stroboscopic lights, which really killed his performance. I couldn’t see a damn thing because of this damn light! As for my experience with his solo concerts I was really close (sitting 10 meters away from the stage, where I could literally see all his facial expressions perfectly and he was able to read my small banner). What can I say - his solo concerts are spectacles beyond imagination! The tension that builds up from the start, the whole production (costumes, lights, moving stages!!!) the way he performs with his amazing dancers is simply mind blowing... Second time I was a little further away, but still close enough to see him without having to look at those huge screens. Third time was a different concert (TMI), where my place was much further away and as much as I still loved the concert and was excited beyond imagination throughout, the experience have no comparison to being really close to him...

@Harmon McCraw Well I know everyone has their idea of where the best seat is. Myself I'm very particular about this. It depends on the event. When it's the symphony, I want the balcony (sound travels up). Anything involving a performance with many moving parts I always choose a seat at either corner of the stage just high enough to see all the way to the back of the stage but can still get a good look at their facial performance. BEING visible myself is of no relevance because the times when I'm performing on stage...whether in a theatre or stadium concert...my visibility reaches only as far as the edge of the stage (wherever the lighting facing down on it stops). It's like a black curtain in front of the audience (conveniently helps you to focus). So I had a clear view of everything. But the only problem was that the whole time they were right in front of me, I could hardly tare my eyes from the dang screen (I'm also a photographer) & all the REALLY amazing shots they were capturing!!! Pretty hopeless 😅

Some of Taemin's backup dancers are choreographers themselves, some are award winners in national and international championships. It just goes to show how talented Taemin is. Because his dancers can pop off and not worry about overshadowing the main artist. I remember reading somewhere about one dancer who has been dancing for 15 years, and saying that in a concert, the backup dancers usually fill the gap to make the performance 100%. But Taemin was the only one who says that he will give 100%, so they should give 100% too. That is why all his performances are phenomenal and incomparable.👑

YES. Taemin’s role model is MJ and he’s inspired by him. Even the way he sings I can see the influence, where he really puts energy and life into pop songs. But Taemin is also different. It’s not mimicking MJ. He develops his own style. For example his music and dance has more asian element in it. I’m not a pro so I don’t know how to describe it.I am so happy to finally find my ultimate bias after MJ.

I watched a "teaching" (?) or dance workshop he did and he emphasized that doing choreography doesn't only mean using the beats of a song. He said it's also very important to take note of the instrumentation, other sources of sound within the song itself...and most of those sounds/layers don't move according to the beat but fill up the spaces between. And Ian Eastwood co-choreographed IDEA.

Hey Jeff, so the choreo is a combination of Ian Eastwood (who did his Danger), Kasper, Keone Madrid, & Bailey Sok. I think that's why there's so much going on & how barely anything repeats. Edit: and you're definitely right about how he didn't seem to go as hard on the dance practice. Taemin rarely goes all out on dance practices. In fact, Criminal was an exception. If you watch the official fancams from the live, you can see him do the moves more energetically than the dance practice.

I was thoroughly happy to hear your thoughts, thank you very much for your detailed analysis and all the interesting references to theatrical exercises, constructing the choreography, using backup dancers and also planning the whole choreography in a way it would fit a huge stage performance. I also feel that Taemin’s choreographies in general, perhaps this one in particular are very original and full of surprising ideas (pun intended 😂), which make them stand out so much in the most positive way from what we often see in today’s Kpop, which would be strong, very synchronized and robotic dancing. Taemin is a real visionary, he envisions his stages already while selecting songs for his albums and often a song is picked by him, cause he can visualize it being performed on his concerts and that really blows my mind that he thinks that way! I will finally subscribe to your channel, cause I feel that you are honest and professional in your opinions and I admire your knowledge and pleasant personality.

did you notice that for most of the time taemin is almost the only one looking straight forward. most of the dancers look on the floor... he is such a good dancer. it feels like this is a masterclass, you learn so much just by watching his practices.

Thank you Jeff for reacting to this! I always like the way you explain your analysis in details, I think I always learn something new by watching your videos. And as a big Taemin fan, I'd love to see professionals analyze his choreographies and dancing styles but it's hard to find someone who explains it as eloquent as you, and as genuinely interested in the kpop industry as you. Taemin has been working so hard for many years to build his own strong identity as a performer, and now seeing his hard work had come to fruition when the audience can easily recognize his signature poses and moves is so satisfying :)

I'm not sure if you'll see this, however this is a link to like 4 performances by Taemin in Japan I think a year or 2 ago. Heaven (which was released officially in Act 2 and promoted with Idea for the first week) was performed previously and the stage is incredible with it rising 45 degrees and dancing. The other performances are amazing as well, along with the vocals. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpyo2NWMn8KokZs.html Edit: you don't have to react to it since it's a longer video and I'm not sure about copyright or anything, but it would be good for you to watch it to see his energy live and with an audience

I love that you talked about how his stages will be set with like the lights and smoke, because that's literally what he's been doing with his stages. It's so amazing how you can visualize performances like that! I love this reaction, the way you explain movements and intricacies from a performers point of view is really eye opening!! Can't wait to see your next one.

Omigod your final words has summarized my thoughts for the dance video. I was a bit sad when it was released bc it doesnt seem synchronized with me and a lot of the back up dancers individual dancing style was very apparent so it made me wonder why taemin would upload it. What you said made so much sense.

I think he's dancing very technically here since he's practicing and needs to maintain his energy, but for his MV and live stages, he puts in more emotions and definitely goes harder. That's what makes him such a great live performer! Watch his live stage from SBS Inkigayo (blue suit). That's my favourite live performance of IDEA so far with good camera work! 🥰

please pleaseee react to BoA songs, too!! She's the solo queen of kpop since 2000, paved the way to all artists in SM and has an active career until today! Highly recommend Only One, Woman or Eat U Up, she has only smash hits in 20 years, and takes dance so seriously in her life just like Taemin. She does the "killing me softly" part in IDEA.

Thank God I found Taemin. He is a masterpiece. Been an exol for a while now because of quarantine then fell in love with SuperM and was so happy when he released 2 kids, followed by Criminal then now Idea. He just blows my mind. His "move" and "want" age like fine wine. There's something about his moves and his voice. Damn. Only Taemin. I also found out that Criminal was based on Stockholm Syndrome and Idea was based on Plato's theory. It really attracts me when an artist/artists have unique storyline in their MVs and not just pure "cute and handsome concepts with uplifting lyrics". Tired of that. Good thing Taemin, and EXO keep me alive. They're saving pure kpop talent. Looking forward to SHINee's comeback!
