There are several thing I appreciate about this dance (beyond the obvious...hello, Lee Know's, Han's, and Binnie's hip thrusts in the performance stages...). I.N just f*cking goes for it. He knows he's not the top dancer, and he's sometimes seemed a little hesitant or reserved, but in this dance he always just goes hard. And it ends up looking really good, partially because he's matching the others' energy and partially because it suits the manic nature of the choreo. He's also genuinely improved his dancing skills. As has Seungmin, for that matter. Conversely, Hyunjin has sometimes had the opposite issue -- his high skill level making him stand out when he's not meant to. Blending is a drastically underrated skill. And as of this comeback, an improvement I've noticed with him is that he's paying more attention to...not drawing attention when it's not his moment. He's now doing better at matching with the rest of the group, most of whom are not at his skill level. Which is making the group dancing as a whole look cleaner and more synchronized. Blending in when you naturally stand out is HARD. Lee Know has always done it; he had years to practice that skill, and considering where he was dancing before SKZ, that skill would have been vital and non-negotiable. But now Hyunjin is learning to do so as well, and that will benefit the team AND make his spotlight moments stand out more. Lee Know has never been expressionless like so many know-nothings like to claim. His expressions are just _different,_ not necessarily as blatant or broad as some of the others'. He uses subtlety in his expressions when he dances just as he does off stage, and I appreciate it; it makes you pay attention, and it's a nice visual contrast to some of the other energy going on. That said, he seems to be putting some focus on upping some of his facial expressiveness in the performances. Not to an extreme, but a click or two up the dial from his usual level, just enough to be noticeable but not distracting. And it's added another level of enjoyability to his performing. And then there's the hip-thrusting. Just...all the hip-thrusting. Everybody's. But especially a particular few who chose violence, I guess.

I completely agree, I love hyunjins dancing but when he goes all out, it tends to overshadow the whole performance. Making it look uniformed even though he dances well. This is why I hold lee know so highly in terms of dance because he knows and understands control. another thing is, people assume that your facial expressions have to be up to the intensity of Hyunjin's for you to be anything other than expressionless which is simply not true.

Also with going harder on the centre and pacing on the outer parts, helps draw the focus to the centre, if everyone went full out, your eyes would drift, but when the centre goes harder than the other aspects of a formation, it solidifies the space you're 'supposed' to look at

About the steps on the first and second chorus, honestly as someone who learned ballet, it's really nice to see how Lee Know, Seungmin, Changbin, and Felix put their front foot on turn-out position. Imo if they're going to lift their foot to the side by turning in, then it's actually easier to put it on turn-out position rather than parallel position. I'm also surprised that Jeff didn't mention the head spinning on that last chorus. I love how Lee Know and I.N did it, they are the ones who did full spin, like truly "embodied" a maniac. And Jeff, go watch the weekly idol fancam! Not sure if I saw it wrong coz the moves is quite fast, but I think Lee Know's foot is quite straight when doing the high kick. And do check how Lee Know did the scorpion dance moves, he use his arm, shoulder, and core strength to lift up his body to finish in a kneeling position. For me, it looks really good and light.

An exceptional dancer not only in the k-pop industry, but in general, considering that he hasn't been dancing for long and hasn't learned it since childhood. Here his in power saving mode, so to speak. But it's still eye-catching. They're executing the move the same way as the others for the first half: spinning to face backward, feet never losing contact with the ground. As the second half starts, they're supposed to leave their right feet in place and just rotate their bodies, pivoting on the left heel and right heel and then toe, resulting in the crossed feet once they're facing front again. Done the way it's meant to be done, neither foot ever completely loses contact with the floor; it's all pivoting on heels and toes while the feet remain in the same space on the floor. But instead, on Hyunjin's first drill spin and I.N's second, they keep their left feet in place like they're supposed to, but they lift the right foot just far enough off the floor to swing it around and line it up with the left foot when they return to facing forward. I.N's is more overt than Hyunjin's, but they both do it. I.N's feet aren't clearly seen in his first drill turn, so I can't tell what he does in this practice, but he regularly loses his balance a bit on this move during performances and ends up just placing his feet as best he can when he regains his center. He usually does a good job of disguising it and selling the move with his upper body even when his feet don't cooperate. (Seungmin has lost his balance on it once or twice too. It's not easy.) Hyunjin's second drill spin in this practice isn't as off choreo as his first. In the ending position of his first drill turn, his feet are completely lined up and pointing forward. But the second ends with them _slightly_ crossed like they're supposed to be. Done correctly, feet are lined up when facing the back wall, which results in the fully crossed position when they spin to the front without lifting the feet. In the second spin, he still lifted his right foot, but rather than swinging/sliding it all the way around and forward again, he planted it a quarter-turn before the end (so a quarter-turn later than the back wall) and got his feet lined up when facing to his right side, then left his right foot down like he's supposed to and completed the move. Since he now usually does the move correctly and ends with the crossed feet -- and most of them now successfully do the continued torso spin to the left before springing back to forward position -- I suspect this practice was recorded while they were still polishing some of the finer points and getting everyone to match up.

6:11 so that’s why they made a Zombie version of this dance practice... I was so confused cuz in my mind I was like “it’s not even close to halloween... why the heck?” I mean, I appreciate it but I was just confused, now it makes sense

Yeah u mentioned the important things, I think recently they do this , I was wondering too if choreographer told them to be more control and relaxed when they aren't in center and then doing hard when they're in center Specially hyunjin cuz he always doing harder than anyone like he dance crazy but choreographer put him in back line in so many part Specially killing part like hips or popping move and u can't even see him :( But when is going on center he killed that!! He really shows Maniac!! If u see studio choom u can see what he did with his eyes that was crazy !

Its good tho, he already got a lot of center part. So the choreografer want to push other members too. I hate when choreografer push one person a lot qnd overshadowed other members

My dance crew (X2C Crew) covered this song and being part of it was insane. Dances like these are so hard to pull off but it was so worth it in the end when we performed it. It really makes one appreciate the group's hard work and choreographers that much more

I'm late but i wanted to say that they probably didn't go full out to let Felix shine in the few appearance he had since he couldn't dance the full choreo with them. Since i realized that they hold back mostly when Felix is in the center.

Over at Twitterland, someone use a clip of Hyunjin doing Chorus choreo part saying "look your fav dance like he tried to off himself" in a tone that suggest the poster is trying to drag SKZ. I don't understand what the drag is so I naturally go to replies, right? It goes like this: Hater 1: He dances like he's going insane Stay 1: Dude, the song is called Maniac Hater 2: He dances like he's loosing a screw Stay 2: Err, that's exactly the lyrics? Hater 3: wtf, he dance like he get bitten by zombie Stay 3: Literally the theme is Frankenstein Hater 4: wtf is this? He's loosing it! Relpy: I'm not even a Stay. The song literally called Maniac. How that is so hard to understand? And it goes on and on. Btw, yes, the haters all from one fandom. Saying sh1t to drag SKZ, but in the process, proving the choreos for Maniac is actually accurately depicts "crazy, manic and odd"

the move you explain around 10:00 I personally think that I would do the third version of the movement because I have troubles with my knees and twisting the leg and knee can be difficult at times... so it might be a reason why they do it in different kinds of ways btw I love the new studio and love that you now have room to show us what you mean when you are trying to explain certain dance moves
