Performative activism, disaster vacations, and the BEST memoir I've ever read 🤯 Sept Wrapup (Part 1)

Let's talk about AMAZING nonfiction books and fun fictional ones that are way too accurate in portraying annoying people IRL. Plus, a reveal for new BOTM books like The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Ties That Tether, and more! All these picks are so good that I gotta postpone the giveaway deadline just so that I can read ALL of them haha. But if you want these books guaranteed and ASAP, you can use my code READWITHCINDY to get your first BOTM box for $9.99: www.bookofthemonth.com/?
Also, I'm trying a new format by showcasing books with the starry background when I first introduce them, rather than putting an image of the book on the screen the entire time I'm talking about it. Let me know in the comments if you have a preference for which format you like better with these wrapups.
[The BOTM giveaway is now closed. Congrats to Claire from Australia for being this month's winner!]

helloooo i usually don't pin my own comments but wanted to clarify a few things! 1) i added some trigger warnings in my description but will re-emphasize them here: The Disaster Tourist (1:40) has a mention of sexual harassment, and Know My Name (4:42) heavily talks about rape and a school shooting. Timestamps are in my description if anyone needs to skip ❤️ 2) about my intro: no one was actually criticizing me for taking sponsorships, they were only lighthearted comments about me getting my coin, and i am simply agreeing with them! i appreciate everyone defending my capitalistic ways tho lolol 3) about such a fun age: i mentioned that booktube does a lot of performative activism, and realize now that it seems like i was taking a jab at the reading rush - i totally did not make that connection when i filmed this, i was more so just talking about booktube & book twitter in general. i wasn't involved in RR at all and stayed out of that entire discourse so i have no opinion on the events or the people there lol. sorry for the lack of tea 4) anyway while i'm here, i have a Q: I'm trying a new format by showcasing books with the starry background when I first introduce them, rather than putting an image of the book on the screen the entire time I'm talking about it. do yall have a preference for which format you like better?

i do like the starry background, but i prefer it if it is in the corner as you talk about it because i screenshot when i want to remember the title of the book and it would be easier, but i dont really mind it because with the timestamps, i can just go to the start of the section to screenshot the title.

If it isn't too much trouble, I'd suggest cutting down the length of the starry background and then having a little cover on the corner while you talk. But of course, I don't mind however you choose to edit, you'll remain funny and insightful.

As someone who is a victim of sexual assault, the most traumatic part was having to constantly relive my assault as I sat in a cold police station. Having to describe what happened in very graphic detail to two grown men while I was only sixteen was probably the hardest thing I ever had to do. I look up to Chanel Miller so much and she was part of why I decided to say something. I don't think I could bring myself to read the book right now as it's still a pretty sensitive topic but I'm hoping later on in life I'll finally be able to pick up the book and read it.

The Hathras murder - and I'm saying it's murder because those bastards and the government are going out of their way to bury her completely - is one of the most tragic and frustrating things to learn right now. Especially since this is the second time the government failed a gang-rape victim who succumbed to their injuries. I hope the other government bodies who are speaking up against these atrocities continue to mount the pressure and demand justice for the woman and her family.

Also it wasn't just gangrape...well I can't believe I am writing just before gangrape. The victim's tongue was cut off and then the assaulters broke her spinal cord. She was hospitalized and the medical report was fabricated such that it said there was no major injury and no rape done. Then to cover up the whole fiasco police took her body and burned her without family's consent to remove the possibility of postmortem. She was 19.

Hathras case is the most brutal and chilling case which has happened in the recent history because she was raped twice over. By the culprit and by the system. Police, govt, media and the upper caste members who tried to save the culprits all are culpable. The fact that she was cremated like so much garbage at the middle of the night by the police, the ones who are supposedly there to protect us, sends shivers down my spine. What's really disturbing is that she breathed her last 15 days after she was attacked and assaulted. They had 15 days to save her but no one bothered. A severe blow to the pride I have in my country. One year later and the case is still at stalemate, no justice given.

I was waaaiting for this since I saw you read Know My Name on Goodreads. Above anything, I am so happy she got to put out a memoir and share her experiences. She WROTE. Did not let anything go undiscussed, and the vulnerability that takes?? The strength?? And I remember just being in awe reading the chapter about the UCSB shooting because I was like wait- no way she experienced THIS TRAUMA AS WELL. OMG. And *that* shooting in particular with what the shooter was aiming for and his disgusting manifesto. Just wow. This is one of those books that is exhausting and infuriating to read- and even more so knowing that is just a **fraction** of what she felt and experienced. But she managed to work in beautiful insights and hopefulness. AND A MOMENT FOR THE SWEDISH GUYS WHO SAVED HER. And I am going to risk being marked as spam LOL but I have to include this interview she did with Trevor Noah because AS PER USUAL she made a beautiful point about our standards of men. I can't remember exactly but she said (towards the end), something like if there are guys like those Swedish students out there- why do we lower our standards for men??? AHHHHHH. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nGl8tst_fMeof9o.html alrighty- thanks for coming to my TED Talk, this essay in finished!

I am from Palo Alto and there is a lot of performative activism currently for the BLM movement and the Brock Turner case was a freaking nightmare because of the PR moves from the school and the massively entitled population there. Even when her book came out (I worked retail in the town) a lot of the customers had several comments about the book release.

I am so glad, so thankful that she decided to write it. (Of course... I would have preferred she didn't have to but...) The book made me feel so seen, so understood. She put thoughts and feelings into words I could never. Bawled and wept the entire time but was still so at peace at the end of it.

And yes the fact that Dani actually was a badass woman who has a career and a partner who supports her made it so much better, because I hate the trope that the main character has a to choose between love and work.

Funny story, when you were talking about The Falling In Love Montage and how cliche and meta it was, it reminded me of a story of my dad’s that was the most cliche romantic thing omg. So my dad is Asian, and he went back to China (the homeland!!!) for college at Peking University, and during this time he and his best friend would meet for lunch every Friday. So one day during their weekly lunches his friend started talking about how at every point in a persons life they will have friends, and these friends aren’t meant to last your entire life, but you know that they were a good friend if you can look back on your memories with them, and still be able to keep up the camaraderie years after you’ve parted. And this dude told my dad that he hoped if this is the last time they see each other in a while and they grow apart, they can meet years later and still be able to act as close as they used to, and feel that they are able to confide in each other. So that day they eat lunch and say good bye but THATS LITERALLY THE LAST TIME THEY SEE EACH OTHER???? Like his friend makes this introspective meta comment about friendships and growing apart and never seeing each other again, and that’s LITERALLY the last time they meet? Cause my dad goes back to California to do grad school at Scripps And his friend leaves to live with his girlfriend in another city in China. And the next time they meet it’s 16 YEARS LATER. IN FRANCE. And my dad has married my mom and had me and my siblings, and his friend has married this French guy and adopted some cute mixed babies. And they plan to meet at the last train stop in Paris, but my dads scared that his friend won’t recognize him because my dad had gotten cancer the year before and just finished chemotherapy, and the chemo radiation had changed his face structure. BUT HIS FRIEND RECOGNIZES HIM???? And then his friend admits that he liked my dad in college, and my dad comes to terms with the fact that his friend was gay the entire time (my dad’s pretty Christian) and then they like spend the week visiting tourist spots in Paris???? And after the trip they exchange numbers but it’s been four years since then and they haven’t talked yet because they know they aren’t that close anymore. But my dad says that sometimes he looks and the number in his phone and feels content that their friendship ended so nicely. Like it wasn’t perfect but they’re on good terms, and the time they had in college is looked back on with fond memories. IM LITERALLY CRYING. THIS IS GIVING ME TOO HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR MY FRIENDS.

When you said the thing about the garden at Stanford I - holy Jesus. Her words were so poignant and well written!!! But also my knee jerk reaction to the school just saying ‘yeah let’s put a garden here!’ was to cringe so deeply it hurt my face

Know my name is also the best book i've read so far this year and when you started talking about it i kinda teared up. Remembering everything Chanel went through and the final verdict in the case just fucks me up.

I was listening to your video while driving-yay autoplay-but I immediately found a spot to pull over and order “Know My Name” because I didn’t want to forget about this book before getting home. I hope you’re doing okay after reading a memoir of this nature.
