Performance| Sufi Songs of Love Spring 2024

Ойын-сауық

Described by the New York Times as an “ambassador for a silenced music,” Amir Vahab is one of New York’s most celebrated and distinguished composer-vocalists of Sufi folk music. He sings with a uniquely mystical style, weaving together Persian, Turkish, and Azeri instruments and songs set to thirteenth- and fourteenth-century poetry from Rumi, Hafiz, Baba Taher, and Yunus Emre. The repertoire of Vahab and his ensemble is grounded in traditional Persian poetry and music, long known for its power to transport listeners to heightened spiritual states through melody, improvisation, and rhythm.
Rooted in Islamic tradition but influenced by contemporary sounds, the ensemble’s music-like Vahab himself-is diversity in unity. Audiences will be elevated to a spiritual world through a lovely syncretism of music and poetry.
This program is supported by the Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute.

Molana Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi, also known as Rumi, was a great Persian poet. He was born in what is now Afghanistan, which was part of Persia at that time, and he passed away in Turkey, where some regions were also part of Persia. Ninety-nine percent of Rumi's poems are in Persian.
