Performance Exhaust and Engine Painting - Metro Gearbox Rebuild, Part 4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this one, we return to the garage, and before marrying the engine and gearbox again, there are things we need to address, namely the oiliness of the engine and engine bay, the engine mounts, and the muffled original exhaust.

The anti roll bar is so easy to remove….and new bushes on that would be good too!

Great to see someone keeping what is becoming a rare sight, on the road. Small tip though - when you reassemble just about anything on the car it is well worth putting a little anti-seize copper grease on the threads. You'll thank yourself when you're old and grey and need to pull some of it apart again.

Some idiot put loctite on my Mondeos braking system bolts fun I had with those bolts lol.one in particular loctite and rust I needed to break out the hot spanner. He should be okay with the bolts they just need torquing up to the correct numbers. I would replace any suspect bolts/nuts

Totally fascinated by you being able to jump from one thing to another...it all looks very complicated and you really make it interesting and understandable too. Keep up the very good presenting work! I'll check back for more updates too 😁 🚗

Oh dear, now You"ve done it. You're on the A series tuning treadmill. A great place to be but knowing when to stop is a problem. Well, it always was for me. You may need to replace the carb needle and spring now you have all that extra air being pumped through the engine to get the best from it. Oh, and personality, I would change the other mount. It will be worth the effort.

Agreed. Personally I would get a rolling road session after the exhaust and air filter update. Many years ago, I added similar mods on a Mini 1275GT. It ran very lean using the standard carb settings and would have damaged the engine if it had been driven with any sort of vigor. The rolling road also identified that an ignition timing adjustment was also required after the mods.

I’d be tempted to fit a top engine steady the same as a mini. I always found that there was too much flex on the standard metro mount setup that would flex the lcb around the spot that your stock exhaust down pipe looks to be cracked?

Good to see the cleaned up bay and all the go faster bits (in terms of noise, that is!) - and your remarkably clean hands! Lol I know you are splitting the reassembly into several vids, but can't wait to to hear what it sounds like when you are able to test drive it. Well done for saving what is, in reality, a well relatively well preserved classic car, and after all the work it will last a good many few more years. Thanks for you enthusiasm and efforts! Rob

you may have to take off the exhaust manifold again (and paint again) as it has these tabs where the bolt goes through that are welded on and when paired with the an mg metro inlet it leaves a gap so the inlet doesn't attach properly, i had to remove mine again and grind off the tabs with an angle grinder, honestly it was not an easy install at all the exhaust clamps where absolute rubbish as well and both of them for the downpipe broke and i had to use my own clamps and clips as well as a load of paste as without it simply entirely seperated at the downpipes mid driving and created the loudest metro in the world, spit flames as well so wasn't the most enjoyable long distance drive, at the same time the float was sticking and causing fuel to overflow so not a good few days, hope you have better luck with it but for me the maniflow exhaust has been a bit of a nightmare

The car's now back together and has been for a number of months. I can't say I've encountered those issues, but with the lack of a flexi, these issues can happen I suppose!

😎👍🇺🇲 🤦 Once again I have to disagree. "The best sounding 4 cylinder engine of all time"? Apparently you've never heard an RG500 on the pipe? I've got one wedged into a 93 MC 21 NSR250 chassis. Have a look.😏 Of course I'm just poking fun. I'm here because I have a 71 Mini. I've also got the same header to install. I'll have to build my own exhaust. I can do it all in my garage. I might add a little American hot rod flare to it. Maybe.😁 I also changed to a couple of pod air filters. I wasn't happy with the OEM air cleaner assembly so I made my own. You should check that out too. Looks pretty cool and it was really cheap if you can TIG weld things yourself. I also (for fun) ported the air intake to carb aluminum bit. I'm sure it does nothing but entertain me. Has anyone ever used a pumper flat slide carb on these little motors? The OEM carb is basically an early CV motorcycle type carb. I wonder if a pumper would work? They have accelerator pumps. I have a DRZ SM with a big pumper on it and it pulls hard. That's what gave me the idea. I could make a spigot mount adapter and easily sort out the throttle cable. Choke might be a challenge. I'd also like to try building my own intake manifold. Something that flows a little better than the stocker. Seems performance parts are pretty hard to find and expensive. Anyway. Cheers from the PNW Seattle WA area 🤘
