    For the people who use the saftey, its a really good one. Easily disengaged on draw and it's designed to not accidentally engage and or catch on anything. I got the 40 and I love it. I put new sights and was ready to go. I might do the bigger mag release. The gun fits great in the hand but when reloading I tend to pivot my hand to push the release.

    Couple/3 years later this is still a good buy. With the new 2.0 , they all have a nice clean break and short reset with the trigger. I think the ported barrel actually benefits the .40 shield much better, you really aren't going to tell a huge difference in 9mm. It does still look really cool though.. Does that matter? Not really, but we could all get by with a standard car or truck, but they aren't sold that way either. I just purchased this pistol, but at the $400 price range is still a good value. You get the sites and the porting. One of the things you didn't mention was the really nice (extra detail) polished barrel ramp. It's a minor thing but really makes a difference for reliability.

    Finally got a PC shield with night sights instead of hi-vis sights and traded my standard in. Wow-what a difference! I took it to the range yesterday and put 125 rounds through it. completely reliable like the standard with 500 rds through it but that "trigger"! I can probably best your Mrs.-lol.. I'm too old to have colored sights anyway. Night & Day! A very good comparison..

    Great reivew. Appreciate the honesty. For me, I've upgraded the sights on my Shield to Truglo TFXs and love it. I don't find the shield to be an issue in terms of recoil. Your observation about the slide stiffness (less of an issue for me) and magazine issue (more of irritant to me) is spot on.

    If you like the standard trigger you will LOVE the new trigger. Plus the porting does help keep it flat and your right back on target. With this shield I can hold five quick shots in the head at 25 yrds. This pistol will flat out shoot! And for the safety, I thought I wouldn't like a safety for a cc gun but you have the option of just leaving it off.

  • @RockStar-dz4ox

    Really?? I doubt very much that you or anyone else for that matter can consistently shoot five quick shots in the head at 25 yds with a 3" barrel. Lets be honest here! Nothing against the Shield tho, its a good shooter. Do you get paid to say those kinds of things, or do you have an inflated and unrealistic ego?

  • @khyoon14

    I agree with you Hegshot. Definitely don't care for the external safety. As for the difference between the PC and Standard model, the price of the PC doesn't justify for what you get. I rather get an Apex tactical trigger and be done with it. Ports on a defensive pistol with a super short barrel is a no go for me. I would want all the FPS I can get out it.

    i hate to say this but you're wrong. the ports help a lot with recoil. i myself have shot both. and i can feel the difference. i had a injury to my firing hand where i cut the tissue between my thumb and index finger from the top of my hand to my palm. i use to shoot wood grip .357 magnums just fine. and after that it hurts my hand too much after 12 shots. shooting the original shield was the same way. it shot nice up until about 50 rounds. shooting the ported shield i noticed straight away it felt a lot less recoil. so from my opinion spend the little extra. you get 4 things. the trigger, the ported barrel and slide, the sights and the cool factor. if ur gunna buy the standard shield and go upgrade it, you're gunna spend the extra money that you should have just bought the ported shield.

    If u are buying gun for a defensive carry reason, you should want the most stopping power that you can comfortably carry (or u won't be carrying it). Although it is a pretty darn good shooter and can be fun at the range, there are better choices if range use is what u are buying it for. To stop an actual threat, you need as many rounds of 9 mm (at a min) as u can carry. May require shorter practice sessions at the range if it hurts your hds, but this is what you really need. Just my opinion of course.

I am happy with it now but I needed to put 100 rounds through it before I got used to the thin grip. Like a lot of people I thought the sights were off but like what usually happens, it was me, the shooter! For me the PC shield was worth the extra $100 because the trigger is sweet and no lie, it is a cool looking gun that can nail a bullseye all day 7, 15, & even 25 yards.

All the upgrades you would need a gunsmith, my opinion. Pay 100 bucks and not worry. Btw if you are going to buy the regular shield, Apex trigger is the way to go.

    Ethiel Perez Those hi viz sights look cheap as hell and have already fallen out when he went to the range the first time. What's the point ? You could get some Truglo TFOs from 80 bucks - 100 bucks. And still be under the price of the pc shield . The apex trigger will still be better than what that pc shield is and you can get that for around 120. So that's about 500 bucks. Vs 420 for cheap shit that falls out plus you don't have to get the trigger upgrade .

    I generally love S&W M&P pistols. I had a Shield 40 and if was a very nice carry pistol with good groupings and a smooth trigger out of the box. When my daughter got her carry permit, I gave her the pistol because I wanted her to have a quality made, reliable firearm I could trust if she needed to use it. To replace it, I bought the S&W Shield Performance Center 40. I bought it for the optic sights and the supposedly better trigger and that these were suppose to be hand built and checked. It turned out to be one of the worse pistols I have ever bought. The trigger was rough and often hung up in the gun. The sights were off center, while on a short barrel gun might not make much difference, it is a problem if aiming for distance. The porting looks tacticool, but really does little for grouping or accuracy and can be an issue if shooting at night. I sent the gun back to Smith and Wesson and it was more or less repaired and corrected, but the trigger is still is not as smooth shooting as the standard Shield 40 I gave to my daughter. Bottom line is; buy the standard version and if you want the optic sights add them afterward. I did not feel the performance center model was worth the additional $120 cost.

    Realize this is a little bit of an older video at this point, but now that sheilds are "all the rage" mostly because of the S&W rebate during Spring of 2017 I found this video the other day when trying to find out more about the differences. My question is can you switch the barrel and slide from the standard non-ported version to the ported performance center version? My understanding is that a lot of people like the ported version for range use, and the non-ported version for carry. Could you get the better trigger and the non-ported barrel using a combo? or is there some reason they don't switch out directly? thanks

    I think Smith should make a REAL PERFORMANCE CENTER Shield with a hand tuned Aluminum Apex kit, Big Dots and flat follower mags(short and long) with plus one capacity. Give it an 1911 like 3.5 pound very short trigger take up and reset and leave the thumb safety because with those tweaks you need it. Don't like the fiber optic sights because they are always breaking. Don't like barrel porting because it blinds me during dim light gunfight drills. This is a 20 ounce 9mm shooting 124 grain HSTs for personal defense...the recoil is nothing unless you are an eight year old girl! Put some non skid wrap around grips on it if you are a sweaty handed old man like me. Now go and practice shooting it as fast as you can on center mass at 7 yards or less at least 100 rounds per week. Run some steps to get you breathing hard and raise your heart rate. Now you're ready if you ever need to get in a gunfight.

    Agree with almost everything on the video. I will say that the idea of changing the sights out on the shield is not a good alternative. It requires a sight tool that is over $100 dollars. I own the shield in 40 caliber and have been very satisfied. The trigger leaves a bit to be desired. Some time on the range and a few hundred rounds you can become very accurate with this gun.

    I saw your other video about the PC one after seeing this one. I wanted to get the PC one after I bought the non PC or regular Shield a few months ago. I got it in .40, so it has a heck of kick to it. I wanted to get the PC one after I discovered it on Smith&Wesson's website. But because I live in Commiefornia, it's illegal. After seeing your videos, I'm glad that I wasn't able to get one. For me though getting mine ported is worth it since it's chambered in .40. Mag-Na-Port says that there can be a reduction of up to 30%. I'm almost sure that Mag-Na-Port does all or most of Smith&Wesson's porting because that's who they recommend after I asked them to port my Shield. But the porting on mine is not like the one that Smith&Wesson has on their PC Shields. Mine are one long opening on each side of the front part of the barrel, unlike the three small openings that the PC Shields have. I don't plan on doing other upgrades because of the reasons you mentioned.

    A great review(as always) on two fantastic firearms, but I totally agree with your final decision. The extra bucks and that damned external safety are big turnoffs for me on the Performance version. Also, don't understand the ramifications of the ported barrel sucking the oil off the externals of the barrel but that can't be a good thing. Wondering about muzzle flash on the ported version in low light-dark conditions impairing getting the gun on target...

    So, what exactly is the "benefit" of those lightening cuts. I know it is supposed to make the slide lighter, but isn't that a detriment to reducing muzzle flip? Maybe they are just for looks?

    +CenterTree777 Good question. Actually it's the opposite. Lighter slide = less mass moving back thus less felt recoil. Ports in the barrel allows a little bit of gas to escape reducing muzzle flip.

  • @RockStar-dz4ox

    @RockStar-dz4ox

    ? A lighter weight (slide) pushed by the same force moves faster. Energy (what you feel) is mass time velocity squared. The energy of the recoil would be higher. Now letting some of the gas escape slightly before the bullet exits the brl will reduce velocity which does help felt recoil (at the expense of a slower projectile). In the end, u hopefully will get a slight improvement in felt recoil.

  • @khyoon14

    @khyoon14

    ***** Energy is mass x speed of light ^2. Momentum is what you mentioned. If the slide is lighter (mass) the felt recoil (momentum) will be less.

    I'm sure the regular shield is nice, but I didn't want to upgrade the trigger or sights and I love the looks of the lightning cuts and ported barrel. For me, it was a no brainer going with the PC shield. I have the Glock 43 and put a bunch of stuff on it to get it how I wanted, and decided this time to buy a new gun and leave it alone. Well, Talon grips go on all of my polymer guns. Dunno about the XDs 9mm that I have on order because that looks pretty grippy. I'd LOVE to see a PC .45 Shield!! Any word on that?

    I wonder if they are putting the PC trigger in the current production non-PC Shields as well? I mention this because I just purchased the Shield with no safety and it is noticeably better (less grit and creep, no false reset) than my original Shield from 2014.

    +This simulation called life they improved the trigger, but I'm not sure if they're using the PC sear in the non-PC shields. I doubt it. They probably gave internals a better polish and revised slide lock that makes the reset more tactile.

    I think a lot of people don't think about the aspect of if you actually kill an intruder to your home. The prosecutor is definitely going to bring into the case what all has been done to your gun, as opposed to being just a stock off the shelf gun. Many prosecutors are looking that if you have a lot done to the gun, like trigger and a 35 round mag, that you were actually waiting to shoot someone so you can brag to your friends. So it might be something to think about. When someone breaks in just use your gun with maybe +2 mag extension and Talon grips and let it go at that, keep your tricked out gun as a backup (if) you need it, that might be a huge difference in your case!!

    PPS M2 is much more ergonomic, very nice!! However I carry the Shield due to similar size but more capacity, esp with the magguts +2 mag kits giving it 10+1 !! If you ever really need to pull your gun out, there may be more than one reason. And even if only one, most cop shootings do not stop a single attacker cold in 6 shots. PPS M2 trig is also a bit stiffer but fun to shoot anyway. If it was slightly thicker to hold 10+ rds, I would be carrying it for sure.

    The gun is a cat turd. I think everyone should have two of them, one to shit on and one to cover it up with. I bought one, it would not feed or cycle ammo. top shelf good quality ammo. I took it back to BiMart where I had purchased it. They sent it back to S&W. S&W had it for about 6 weeks. Said they repaired it, sent it back to BiMart. I picked it up, went to the parking lot, loaded the Mag., tried to chamber a round, and jammed again. Evidently S&W repaired something else, cause they sure as hell didn't repair the feed problem. Now, if this were a new curtain for a room in my house, and it was too short or any other goof, "Hey, no big deal". But if I need to count on drawing down on the bad guy and the thing doing what it is supposed to do, and the difference is if it doesn't, I'M DEAD.That's kind of an important feature and purpose of a gun. This Shield in no more than a paper weight. The up side that it is a turd, if there is a $450 up side of a paper weight is that I KNOW it is SHIT, and will not make the life changing mistake of carrying it, and feel confident that it would be my life saver. S&W have lost ALL of any respect I had for them as a gun manufactuer. I will never buy another product from them, nothing, ever.
