Perfect Your Cornering: Don't Fall for This Common Error | How To Bike S3 E1

Спорт

Season 3 of How To Bike kicks off with a lesson in cornering, specifically how to pump through them. Joined by Aimi Kenyon, Ben Cathro spends the day working with to fix the common habit of sinking back into the bike when moving through the corner.

Cathro is a legend, world class rider, person and presenter! Pinkbike is so fortunate. There is so much shared physics and synergies between ski racing and riding. IMO just like properly 'carving' on skis, you just can't 'ride' the skis passively and you NEED to know HOW to drive through the turn. Yes, you can just tip in skis or turn in the bike, squat back and let gravity do the work.. but the way to maximize power transfer to maximize traction and accelerate (basically pumping, but using the outside part of your tires) is to commit to angle for the turn radius by turning into the fall line, stack (or in this case apply bike/body separation) to put the maximum weighting over the edge or side knobs of tire AND then then DRIVE through the whole turn with the thought of 'Fore and Aft' - i.e. starting from front to ending more towards the back Counterbalancing on a bike is similar to the transition on skis, in order to initiate the turn in, or 'tip-in'

Ben’s ability to translate difficult techniques in plain English is brilliant. How he visualises the corner here and splits it in to separate zones is fabulous. I look forward to these videos so much. 🎉

Cathro's an absolute legend and this series is by far the best in providing logical, well explained information that is actually transferrable to your local trail for practicing. An enjoyment to watch and take mental notes. One small gripe with most Pinkbike videos is the audio design/edit since (at least on my speakers and headphones) some parts (mostly music) are significantly louder than others, and I find myself reaching for the volume control more than once.

This is absolute gold, definitely the best "how to" MTB series out there! A question for PB and other commentators: How much influence can rear shock rebound damping settings have on this technique? In particular, is it easier to practice with a little more damping? Occasionally I find I get pushed back and the bike shoots off ahead of me coming out of a turn, and I'm wondering if this could be poor technique (obvs) compounded by relatively low/lively rebound damping on the rear (which I selected for ride quality down rooty steppy terrain). Cheers! Definitely inspired to get out on the bike and try this out ASAP!

That's a really good tutorial. There's that trail, pretty easy and flowy at my local bike centre, with which I struggle a lot at literally 3 corners. I don't like them, I feel uncomfortable at them and I couldn't improve when sessioning them. That video goes to rhe Skills playlist to be used in spring.

So: make the suspension do the work by being firmer with arms and legs as you compress into a berm. Especially front end to create the initial bite and change of direction, and then drive out of the berm supported by strong legs pushing the rear into the ground.

Noticeable change in the dip of the inner shoulder to drive the front where you want to go. I can do this on a pump track but I find committing to a dirt berm scary, causing me to sink down and, ironically, lose front-end traction. 😢

"That was scary" is what I think keeps good riders from cornering well. Not that they are scared of crashing but having the confidence to know the corner will hold the aggressive turn. Without being a pro it looks like what separates the elite from the rest is how accurately they are able to push the limits of each corner. On a turn I know well I may get to 80 or even 90% of the maximum grip available. Pros with their elite body position to find the most available grip and their expert judgement of what will and will not hold will get close to 100% of what is possible. This is why over the course of a 4-5 minute downhill event you see the top 10 are separated by seconds. They are all so good at getting close to 100% there is very little room for improvement for any of them.
