ken engle instinct shooting, not really, the handgun has to fit your hand. The caliber, weight, width, angel barrel to handle, the smoothness of the trigger/action, the height of the slide over the grip, and most of all the hump on the rear of the grip will determine the proper handgun for you. Look at a can chest high 6 foot away, close your eyes, bring the gun up with your eyes closed, then open your eyes, if it close to the can it is good for SD. How it feels means little. If you pick up the proper handgun it will work with your eyes closed on multiple threats. Mike

    M. M. If accidents concerned me I would not CC drive/ride in a car. I drove over 60,000 miles from Panama to Canada on a motorcycle with a dog for 9 years. In the last 6 years I've had over 3 life/death encounters, none were less then 4 threats to as many as 20. People prepare for what they know or think could happen. My world is bigger than most. Mike

Been a cop a very, very, long time… IMHO: Mike's Mana'o (experience) is real world, believe me when the threat to you and your family is at the door step and seconds count…us cops are just minutes away. This is the honest to God truth, believe me, I'd love to be there in time to save the day for the innocent & unprotected, the simple reality I learned a long time ago, it's totally unrealistic to believe or assume law enforcement officers will be there in time to save the day for everyone. All citizens should have the reasonable means to protect themselves from those who's intent is to do harm to you. Criminals always have a plan before they intitiate their move…law abiding citizens seldom do. I'm not saying we should be paranoid…No!…just be prepared to manage and mitigate various scenario's, maintain a mindset to survive a criminal encounter.

Just a note: The reason police and military are taught to square up to the target is that they wear body armor. "Blading" the target presents a smaller target for the bad guy to hit, but if you are wearing armor, it presents more body area that is not covered than if you squared up. Usually civilians will not be in armor, so blading the target like you show is the right answer whenever possible.

I can tell just from experience of fighting in the ring and on the streets. You know what you are talking about because I can tell it is from experience and that really really is what counts. You can go through all the drills and practice sparing in the ring and it is completely 180 degree difference when it happens out in public in a restaurant or bar or park or walking down the sidewalk or even driving. I am going to watch more of your videos and see what else you have to offer. Thank you for your knowledge and your video.

Sky, this is why I tell stories, every situation is different because of the human fact. But when you have a plan you can build on it. Without a plan you are blown by the wind and you are at the mercy of the situation. The only way to learn is to prepare and have fun with what ever happens. Just remember no one has the right to hurt you (in any way, that is why I try to cover all the bases) and with a good plan will lead to a life is fun and adventure. By running drills (both physically and mentally) and practice you will have one less problem to deal with. Now it is how to avoid using that skill, and if there is no choose. Well at lease you have a plan to build on, and if you do that in all aspects of your life, you will have fun. Mike

Funny, i liked this video 11 years ago and had been carrying a Glock 26 daily for almost 5 years then. Now 11 years later, I'm still carrying my Glock 26 with a G17 backup mag every day. I own a lot of guns.... bigger and smaller... but its like this man says... pull, point with eyes closed, open and see.... nothing works like the Glock 26 for me. I also shoot it better than my 19, 27, 23, 43, or 42. These videos are golden.

I have to admit when I first started watching the video I thought to myself, what is this guy saying? Then I started hearing and watching a little more carefully. He seems legit and I like his no BS approach. I spent most of my life dealing with extremely dangerous people (Corrections and Law enforcement) I have watched cops get there a$$ handed to them because of their unrealistic approach to training. It is good to see someone who knows how to take care of business and tell it like it is, the street is ruthless and you need to be intentionally prepared or your dead!

Today here in North Carolina I did a class which I proved again the statements I claim. The group was amazed how the different guns preform differently in a self-defense situation then you would find at the offensive, range, or plinking. The right tool makes the tactic more effective.I go back to OK tomorrow to rest before I go to the north and east next month. Thank you, Mad Dog for staying with me.

+dewalt1799 What is funny is I teach both police and military personal in self-defense and 3 man militias. Both are good and efficient at what they do, but defending in life/death against the odds with no support system is another story. When I am in the US we brain storm and compare notes and tactics used in their deployment and/or in their police work. When we talk you can really see the difference in mind set. And it is fun, we are of no threat to each other, and we find ways we can help each other at all levels. The civilians learn how to work hand in hand with us and there is no power struggles, we just have fun learning from each other. There is no limits on what we talk about or how we can work with each other. It is surprising how morally strong individuals can come together, and its rewarding to all and their families (the whole family gets involved). Mike

Hey Mike, love watching your old vids, still learn stuff from them. I am trapping problem beaver today, or as I like to say "Getting paid to catch my food". Anyway my 22 pelletgun was good for any beaver under 25 pounds, but ineffective on 50 pounders and had to buy a rim fire 22 to do the job. It's a small, compact, semi-auto that has 11 round capabilty and fits well in my pocket. I bought 710fps subsonic ammo that is actually quieter than my pelletgun. BUT...it has 3 safeties that if I use it for pocket summer time carry, I will leave the safeties off. It has a trigger safety and a firing pin safty, but also won't fire unless the hammer is pulled back. I feel in a heated moment pulling back the hammer is enough, fumbling with 3 safeties in an altercation will get you killed. Don't get me wrong, I love my 38, but now that I am down to 160 pounds there is nowhere to hide it in the summer time, and with 11 high velocity rounds a 22 can be a good selfdefence weapon. It may not kill a bad guy but it will hurt them bad and change their priorities from robbing me to finding a doctor for some pain pills. And since I am now a trapper I will have the 22 more times than not. They even make a pocket carry holster that changes the shape of a gun to look like a square wallet, it has a trigger finger hole in it so you can pull it and fire without taking it out of the holster. Perfect for my 22.

Oh, well he was in the military or he's a cop so if anyone knows anything it would be him. I got nothing against either one but on the street as a civilian it's a different story. I just dont think enough people realize that. Hope fully your vids will help spread the word.

I think you are absolute correct. Even in military situations, some of the same rules apply. That western/TV goes out the window when you are fighting for your life. Stance and aiming is also overrated. Where ever you point your finger is where the shot goes at short range. I often have told people to practice their aim with a laser or a small flash light. I would never put either on a carry pistol through!!! Great Video!

My carry weapon is a Kahr CM-40. Only 6 rounds total (no safety like a Glock), but .40 caliber power. 180 grain Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel ammo is all I keep in it. I pocket carry (cargo pants in winter, cargo shorts in winter) so it's comfortable all day long and I can go into any indoors situation without anyone knowing I'm carrying. My vehicle gun is a Taurus PT-145 Millenium Pro with a 24/7 12 round magazine inserted (it's compact and fits in my arm console). In my home, it's either my CZ-P09 9mm (19 round magazines means I get more opportunities to hit an assailant when I'm groggy from just waking up), or my EAA 10mm. They work well for me.

I have a Ruger LCR .22 magnum with a Crimson Trace Green laser sight. I can put a shot on target without having to aim, from a compromised position. The average gunfight occurs with one hour of sunset or sunrise, is over in less than 7 seconds, at an average distance of 7 feet. I also carry a spare gun. A ruger lcrx. 8 round 22 or loaded with high power 40 grain bullets. The LCR magnum weighs less than one pound while the lcrx weighs 17 ounces. They are so light I sometimes forget I am carrying them. I just love 22's, and wheelguns. Having shot many thousands of rounds of 22's since I was 13 years old. Easy to carry. Easy to shoot. No safety to disengage. No jams. Just point and shoot.

Since your big on numbers, how many attackers, are they police/military, what are they armed with, how many stop shooting after being shot, how many rounds stopped them, did they get closer when the shooting started, how many of you, are you all armed, and why would you want to carry a .22 (because you can hit a target that doesn't shoot back)? I'm just asking because many without a workable or fully thought out plan believe it statistics. I talk about reality shooting, based on experience. Mike

Hey Mike, I like watching some of your old videos because I still learn stuff. Just bought a rim fire 22 to dispatch Beaver I trap when my .22 pellet gun bounced off it's head. It worked on smaller beaver but on a 50 pounder it had no effect. Now that I have a rimfire .22 I bought 710fps subsonic ammo to quietly dispatch my catch without bringing too much attention. It works like a charm even though the pellet gun has 900fps velocity the rim fire 22 has more led and connetic energy. But surprisingly the rimfire with subsonic ammo is quieter than the pellet gun The problem is that the rim fire gun has too many safeties, there is a trigger safety, a hammer safety and it won't fire unless both safeties are off and you pull the hammer back, 3 safeties. If I use it for a summer time pocket carry, I will leave all the safeties off, because I still have to pull the hammer. back and that is enough safety when trouble. comes. It has 11 shot capability and will CCI Mini mags hollow points it may not mortally wound a person, but it sure will hurt him enough to change his priorities from robbing me to finding a doctor ASAP. And when the time comes, you do what you have to, with what you have. Because of my work catching problem beaver, or as I like to say "Getting paid to catch my food". I will probably have the 22 with me most of the time, it fits in the pocket better than anything I have. Don't get me wrong, I love my 9 but it is to bulky to hide under summer time cloths and old folks need protection 24-7, we are the target most crooks wanna pick on. Winter I will carry my 9 or 38.

Mr. Mike Mah = THANK you for this video tutorial! I am a complete greenhorn about guns and have never fired a handgun so your approach (as you've highlighted) is a breath of proverbial fresh air! I am a potential 1st time buyer and have been leaning towards a revolver for simplicity's sake. [question pertaining below:] Question: is a .22 calibre out of the question for effective stopping power? I am on a budget.

  • @nostressmike

    @nostressmike

There is much to consider for a self-defense firearm. 1 - Defense from what? Animals - what kind? People - how many, crazy, drugged up, what kind of people (organized or criminals)? 2 - You personally; your body shape and size, experience in violence, abilities. 3 - Mind set It would be nice if you learned martial arts, the ability to take a weapon is a useful skill. Your brain is your first line of defense the next is using you hands and body. When most people lose their weapon there is not much fight left. Answer to your question: In general, the only stopping power a 22 has is in bullet placement, and you can't count on that in self-defense. ULTRA-LITE MODEL 94 .22 LR REVOLVER STAINLESS STEEL is a fun gun and is a simple handgun. If you live in the Tulsa area or close I am looking for someone that has never fired a firearm to make a video on "How to use an AK47 effectively in 15 minutes". Email me and I can go into more detail and in person I can share everything. I keep my home page updated, nostressmike.com/ Thank you for your support, Mike

There is self- defense and a gunfight, they are different. For sd you need the proper handgun, you will not have time to aim. The proper holster, you will not have time to draw. My gun is drawn before anyone knows, all I do is shot when necessary. The speed and rate of fire I use strikes fear in all around me, if the threat lives or dies does not matter as long as I am OK. Then I get an AK in case it turns into a gunfight. This tactics works and has kept me alive. NoStressMike

You and two buddies focused on a common goal, there are many usefully skills that can make you valuable to others. In general after a second or so and/or more than 6 feet it turns into a gunfight, now that is different, and I have videos on that also. I have been shot at and shot at, numerous times both in real-life and simulated training in my classes and SWAT Teams each month (full combat conditions) for years. Mike

I feel that I can draw a 1911 and a glock at the same speed. Yes glock is lighter but in my practices iv found that its the same time. What is really good is my reload time. I can drop a mag put a new one in drop the slide, have both hands on it and aimed in less then a second. Not even a full second. All it is is practice lol. I'm better at reloading steel guns yhen I am polymer guns. The glock and Xds mag gets hooked on parts of the mag Well sometimes but with say a cz75 or an m9 its alot faster.

I teach extreme self-defense, meaning extreme danger. All I do is show others some of what I do I hope no one will ever need to do what I do, but it works There was no one behind the camera

I teach the most advanced self-defense in the world. The first thing I do and for the rest of the class is point the gun at every one. I teach the gun is a tool, the person holding the gun it the problem. If you get scared and freeze when a gun is pointed at you, you will have a hard-time reacting when needed. My training is not for everyone, we end up using wax bullets and shoot one another and everyone will bleed but only once.

The best is to carry in the same position all the time, but it is not always a good idea. For me it is cold now, so I've had to come up with another carry. I had a vest made for me with a cross draw I can use when I am wearing layers of clothes. When I drive I use a cross draw I can use when I am setting. You have consider you body shape, lifestyle, the kind of weapon you carry, and the tactics you use. Then you can figure out what kind of clothing you need to wear. I carry all the time. Mike

Drawing silently from concealment is another important key ingredient to a surprise tactic. This is my biggest drawback to kydex holsters. I like virtually everything about kydex better than leather, from a practical standpoint, but they are not silent when drawing. They make a very distinct sound that warns an attacker to what you are doing. Example: Sitting in a diner, guy(s) enter to rob the place. They turn away from you for a moment and you try to draw a weapon discreetly. Kydex may tell on you. Just my thoughts. This is a good video.

Interesting. While I don’t agree with everything said here there are two concepts I believe are extremely important. First, better to draw your piece, or at least establish your grip, and not need it than to rely on a quick draw. Second, the military and police shooting position is chest towards the target. That’s great if you’re wearing plates or a vest; maybe not so great when you’re not wearing protection.

+jaedbl67 * When I was a young stud I used a .45, and thought that was the one and only. * As I got older I have had more encounters, and my threats seldom are one or two (more like 6 -20), and I do SD only. I'm too old/wise to screw around. * In 1-2 seconds I can put out more accurate fire power, in a wider area, in a shorter time, on more threats with a 9mm. * As you know each person has their own bogeyman they have to deal with. * As a Marine first, the handgun is to get me to my rifle (AK). * After that we can talk. LOL Mike

+NoStressMike I agree most people do much better with accuracy with a 9mm. Mike, my thoughts in considering what handgun to use is to consider that if three pitbulls/or criminals were charging you what would be the best handgun. I just don't know if a 9mm would do the job, very possible though. My personal choice would be the Glock 21 45 caliber; the recoil seems about the same, that's strange, but amazingly it's true as for as I'm concerned. I assume also that the criminal will be armed and sometimes it's who has the biggest stick, if you can hit with it. All this is, like you say, personal choice. My Benelli 9 shot 12 gauge or my AK is what I'd be trying to get to in any threatening situation. Good luck to you, and again, thanks for you input.

+jaedbl67 * 3 predators at once? LOL I've only had something like that happen when I was training SWAT and Vietnam Those are police and military tactics. * For me, my SD/CC allows me to be drawn and ready, so I don't care how many I have the advantage. * The guy I shoot had a drawn large heavy .45 and it did do him any good. LOL * Wyatt Earp was slow and accurate, but normally I have too many threat, I don't have time. * I would bet I could empty more accurate rounds of 9 mm faster then just jerking off in .45. * Remember I have no back up, I know within the 3-5 second I will be dead/alive. With my tactics if I can make it that long I will survive a self-defense (SD) situation. * Normally (on the street SD) after 1-2 seconds it turns into a gunfight and I change tactics as I did in the store shooting. SD to going on the offensive. That is the difference between mine and police tactics, they are always on the offensive. I don't know how to put it in words, but when I trained it was apparent. Where it is most noticeable is their drawing the weapon, and I don't draw. Mike

@@jaedbl67 the street gang conflict I got into in 2007 used a .45 (1911) which was heavier, physical larger, and slower (and it was drawn) than my Glock 26. My video series is "the last time I shoot someone in Kansas". I was able to get the first and second shot off before their attack could go into action, giving me the advantage. 3 dogs attacking (or any threat) my number 1 goal is to stop the threat. My tactics are different than most because of my numerous experience. Taking life is second to stopping the threats. I'm getting older and slower, I have been thinking of using a .22 because it smaller and lighter. The weapon and ammo has improved (.22) so I am thinking about it. Lol Mike

My guns have safety's which I practice with all the time. When I don't practice I test myself and go through the safety position in my head. On one an FN the safety is by index and when it is pushed down it is in the fire position. I've got it down to a single motion to draw and fire. How about one shot to the head? If you have no real life experiences in the realm of combat/self-defense, such as this man does, and you want to discredit those who do, you better start firing something other than blank rounds at the man's methodology. The lesson here is, don't assume that there is only one best way to shoot. As dodging a reactionary bullet, especially if out of the barrel of a right handed shooter, is very plausible, as demonstrated by this technique.

The only problem in Florida concealed carry is the sheer number of basically untrained civilians walking around with guns. Could make it dangerous in a real world self defense scenario, especially in a crowded environment such as a Wal-Mart or Concert venue. How would you really know the good guys from the bad? I have been a CWP holder and EDC for 22 years now and when I started there were probably only 100K or less doing so. But today there are close to 2 million permit holders in the state of Florida. Criminals today in the state know that it's a good chance that if they decide to do something stupid there's a good chance that their victim may be armed. I'm convinced that a "well armed society is a polite society". And the crime statistics in Florida back me up.
