It’s a shame that games ended up copying the Halo and CoD template instead of from these games. The single-player mode in most modern FPSs is laughable
@michaelk-j6123
3 жыл бұрын
These games are important and I absolutely love them, especially perfect dark. They were revolutionary for FPS on console, but they were very prototypical and extremely imperfect. Relics of a transitional era for FPS on console. No one had nailed how to handle FPS controls without a mouse and keyboard at this time, and as a result the controls in both goldeneye and perfect dark are pretty terrible. They make too much compromise, because it was all they knew how to do at that time. The 64 controller is also not friendly to FPS, and designing the controls for an FPS on the 64 controller was just not ideal. It was the first Halo game that nailed console FPS controls, and formed the standard for how FPS will be handled on consoles from then on. I regularly play Perfect Dark on my original hardware, without emulation. If you play it this way you'll notice that the framerate is terrible. Without any framecounter I'd guess the game averages far less than 20 fps, and drops regularly in large open spaces and rooms with lots of enemies. This is something people forget about PD, I guess we all put up with it back then, maybe we are spoiled now with games being expected to be able to run at a stable 60fps on mid-tier hardware. But this was not the standard at the time, a lot of PD's contemporaries and even predecessors had stable framerates and far fewer bugs and memory issues. Still, I'd argue that the best FPS games of all time are all PC natives. I think it's stiff competition. When Perfect Dark came out in 2000, the previous decade saw Doom, Quake, UT, Half-Life, Duke Nukem 3d, Blood, and a bunch of other revolutionary and extremely influential games that are highly acclaimed to this day. I dont know that PD could honestly stand against any of those PC FPS giants, the only thing it has going for it was how accessible it was at the time. Not as many people owned gaming PCs as they do now, and few people wanted to bother learning how to use a computer just to play games. It was far easier to buy a console and play games that way in the 90s and early 2000s.

Perfect Dark was by far one of the best FPS games of the N64 era, easily in the Top 5. It came out around the same time as Golden Eye (the game based off the James Bond film). Perfect Dark took the 4 player splitscreen multiplayer to whole new levels...you could do so much with it. so many characters, weapons, levels, you could customise your lives, difficulty...it really set the ideal for the future of what games should be about when it comes to shooters.

I disagree entirely Eazy - E. A game that's lacking TONS of features that PD has. A game that has micro transaction wallet rape written all over it from one of the most evil corporations in gaming aka activision. A game that's totally based on twitch shooter nube friendly repetitive game play. Just no dude... Games like cod owe everything to games like PD which actually evolved shooters instead of just ripped off gamer suckers. Some halo games come close but even those lacked the weapon variety and multiplayer options that PD has. And the PD remaster is fucking bad ass. But hey... Based on your taste in music it seems you just sort of go with what's newer and popular all of the time for the most part so I'm not surprised at your lack of notice when it comes to the gems of the entertainment world. One day you might get better at identifying talent though... Good luck to you.

It’s a shame that games ended up copying the Halo and CoD template instead of from these games. The single-player mode in most modern FPSs is laughable

@@michaelk-j6123 Which probably explains why I never played doom quake UT duke nukem or blood, and only played half-life way later after the game had stopped producing new games. I hated doom personally and I always saw computer games as something to emphasize graphics since it could afford to do so so most of the computer games I even touched were real time strategy games only.

Rare was pure magic back in the day. The people who made goldeneye had never even worked on a game before....or at least some of them. The same team then went on to create perfect dark after that experience with no limitation from a license....just pure creativity. Back then, people who made games had a passion to do so.

As I opened this video, a wave of nostalgia and forgotten memories of days past hit me like a tornado, reminding me of the great old days as a keen kid full of curiousity and wild interest in all things gaming and the joyful days of playing multiplayer games and masterpieces that would go on to define a whole generation. The last I expected was to be hit with nostalgia when listening to this, as I don't even remember that much of Perfect Dark, but this unlocked memories I had seemingly lost and reminded me of how Perfect Dark played a big role in my early childhood with games :')

This and Goldeneye man...Rare wasn't fucking around with game themes back in the day.

Best Menu theme ever.
Agreed, even if the frame rate drops sometimes, this one was so much better than PDZ. It really didn't seem Sci-fi or military styled in anyway musically.
The best FPS I've ever played...Although, speaking about technological achievements , there are plenty other FPSs which are better but the depth of this one here is unparalleled... Amazing game! I play it even now!

@Scabbed15 They're both made by Rare at close to the same time period. A lot of Goldeneye sounds are used in Perfect Dark like opening doors, melee attack, and the enemy dodge/roll animations and graphics are very similar. They're semi-clones almost.
