I like to put on my master bus plugins about halfway through the mix. It acts as a nice "treat" right when I'm starting to bog down in a mix. It reinvigorates me. But at the same time, it's not so late in the process that I've painted myself into a corner.

Umm 4:1 on the mixbuss is a bit high. 2:1 is a safer bet. Especially if your adding drum buss, guitar buss, vocal buss, background vocal buss, etc., as well as compression on a few tracks. It all adds up and can become overwhelming!
