Hello and welcome to my channel,
in this video I am restoring a abandoned billhook. I got the machete from Mister Patina. He brought it back to me from a visit to MyMechanics.
Of course the pressure is very high with it and I try to achieve the perfect restoration.
The antique knife is called a "Hippe" or "Gertel" in German. It is used in gardening to beat back unwanted bushes and branches less as a survival machete.
I started the restoration of the rusty billhook by removing the loose rust with the wire brush. Then I disassembled the old leather handle.
I removed the remaining rust by electrolysis.
Then I could start with the refurbishment of the blade. In various stages, I ground out the rust pits, leaving only a few to indicate the history of the antique tool.
The maker's name "Steinemann" remained visible and is nicely highlighted by the mirror polish steel of the blade again.
I sharpened the machete with an MDF grinding wheel that I made before.
I could not save the old leather handle because the leather was hard and brittle. For this reason, I made a new handle based on the original design using layered ebony and aluminum.
As always, there is a beer test before assembly. This time I test the belgian beer "Leffe".
After the well-deserved break, I reassembled the restored machete.
In the final tameshigiri test for katana swords with a tatami mat, the machete could prove its sharpness.
I am very happy with the asmr hardware restoration video and hope you have fun with it.

I have one exactly like it. Found it in a field. After restoration, it was a couple of decades before I put it to work. Its a fantastic tool. Its used for jobs I formerly did with loppers or small chain saw. Very efficient.
"Not Terrible", my as_! That is one of the best restorations I have ever seen! It's beautiful!

You always surprise me with your innovative ideas when repairing items when parts are not available or just improving on the original idea! You are a 😊 true craftsman. If I was young again, as a perfectionist I would really enjoy and excel in that type of work.

In the UK we'd call one of these a bill or a billhook. Used for hedgerow work originally. Pretty cool find and excellent work.

Oh and I’m 99% sure they’re called a “billhook” blade because of their shape. Just for the few that might not know 😁

Not so much hedgerow work but what is known as "copicing" which is how woodland is kept accessible to live stock and walkers.
@georgenewlands9760
2 жыл бұрын
@@zoiders That wasn’t the primary purpose of copicing, it was a process to produce wooden poles of hazel or ash, harvested on an eight to ten year cycle. The poles were used to make a large variety of objects in pre-industrial society.
I like the handle and the polish on the blade is great.

@@NTRprojects The other 99% of restoration channels seem to be filled with hipsters who own a lot of tools but don't understand steel. Its when you see them "heat treating" kitchen knife blades in a commercial electric oven that I cringe the most.

Wonderful work! Love love love the handle. The next time you have dried leather like that soak it in Neatsfoot oil for a couple days. Thats how we restore old leather on saddles and bridles and all.
Top-Arbeit! Ich sehe mir gerne Deine Videos an und habe mir auch schon ab und zu mal eine Bier-Empfehlung gegönnt. Bleib dran, das ist top!! Grüsse aus dem Ruhrpott 👋
This is one of your best videos by far! Your restoration was impeccable, and that handle you made is beautiful and suits the whole aesthetic of the piece so well. Have you recently changed camera? Your filming and editing were gorgeous. It really made that beer's colour pop, it made me want one myself! This was an absolute treat, thank you! I'm not well at the moment (my house has cov 19, thank you british government), so this brightened my day significantly.

Tolle Arbeit.

It's absolutely beautiful, one thing though, traditionally, working knives such as machetes are usually blued, they are to be used outdoors and bare metal rusts extremely fast in those conditions. As a show piece though, its stunning.
what an amazing transformation! I would love something that sharp looking and SHARP in my garden work. I was surprised with the original leather handle...then thought why not! easy on the hand...now we have gloves. Wonderful work!

In all honesty and from all what i've seen in the restoring and knife smith niche, this video is by far one of the best i saw. Everything is very well explained, the tools are very clean, the work is clear to understand, there's humour and fun, the workshop seems clean, the safety is respected...And so many other things. Now for the machete it is sooo beautifully restored! BRAVO my friend and thanks for being so generous in sharing your knowledge without selfishness!

Hey Blunt I just saw your comment and I'm really really flattered
Absolutely, Beautiful! One of your best. I wish you had redone the handle in leather like the original. It offered some cushioning for the hand. (I emphasize "restoration")
I have a novel video idea! In one video you restore multiple simpler tools in succession as you find you need to restore the next in order to work on the one prior. You can build dramatic tension with each one and then finish them all in the end with elation.
Damn great job.👍🇺🇸
I used to skip over the beer part of your recording, now I look forward to your rating.
