Having nectar plants is important for the adults but Angelo didn't address the importance of host plants. Without host plants you won't have butterflies and each species of butterfly requires a specific host plant.

yep no mention of milkweed for monarchs or dill or parsley for swallowtails. We do butterfly weed and common milkweed in our yard but the swallowtails seem to hang out for our flowers.

I want that Weigela behind them. most garden centers sell only the 2 gallon Weigela that one looks about 5 to 7. Carnations and daisies for hummingbirds, nope. Maybe butterflies. Can someone tell is the first purple flower he pointed to beard tongue (Penstemon)?

vistaprime I just my first beard tongue to attract hummingbirds it appears pinkish-orange. Because I’m just starting my flowerbed, I don’t know if the purple flower is Beard Tongue or not nor what color varieties exist. What is the best way to plant beard tongue; a few plants closely grouped or separated? Any help is appreciated.

yes, I planted some and the hummingbirds visited them. So did the butterflies!
