🔺 Our Mission 🔺
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education.
Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal.
Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

I love watching your rescues. So so cool. I had a big smile on my face as you were rescuing that goffer for snake. That's something I do. I don't care what it is. I don't care if the snake. I don't care whether it's a bird. I either stop for them or slow down so they can get across the road. My husband laughs at me. But I just don't want to kill anything. Or have them run over.

Once upon a long long time ago, I lived out in the country at the end of a gravel road. I pulled out of the driveway one morning and noticed a huge branch on the road... far away from where any trees could have dropped one. I was going to just drive over it until I suddenly realized that it was a snake and slammed on the brakes! It was stretched out in the sun absorbing the heat from the rocks on the road. It was about a 6 to 7 foot gopher snake. HUGE! I'd never seen one that large before. I found a nearby tree limb and coaxed the snake off the road and into my adjacent vegetable garden, then got back in my car and headed into town. So glad that I didn't run over it!😊

Snakes belong in the wild. It's the right thing to do to save them. But...a week ago my sister sent me a picture of a snake curled up... within inches of the coffee cup she was drinking from. The resulting video had me in stitches, laughing so hard. One little snake, about the size of your rescued golpher snake, and three people, an ice cooler chest, and three snake catching sticks. It took all of this to get that poor thing safely locked up into the cooler and back outside where it belonged. I know if I were that snake, I would sure think again before I crawled...or slithered...back into that house to escape triple digit heat! Wildlife belongs in the wild! Thanks to you, Martin, there are many wild things living happy and free now. Without all the drama of an ice chest and three people... 😯😳😖👍🐍

Martin, you are such a wonderful caretaker of wild predators! Predators are so important to our entire ecosystem! Studies have been done, ant it was found that ALL species suffer when the top predators are removed. One famous study was down in a tide pool that had many, many species in it. They removed the top predator - the sea stars, and found that in a short time, all the different species were eaten by one type of mussel, and there were only mussels left. Another study in Yellowstone National Park showed how important gray wolves were to the whole environment. “The loss of gray wolves led to an explosion of the elk (Cervus canadensis) population and subsequent overgrazing of plants, including immature trees. This loss of vegetation negatively impacted beaver and bird populations. Without enough plants to hold the soil together or shade the ground, the overgrazing of the area also led to river bank erosion and changes in water temperature due to lack of shading.”
