Glad I went through this with the 61 I just got. When taking the nipples off one of them just started breaking apart, thankfully the wrench I had gotten spares. Think I’ll take a closer look at the others again before I take it out to shoot just to be on the safe side.

a little bit of grease on threads is good engineering practice and crucial on blackpowder fire arms IMOH after 30 odd years of fooling around which such things. Any sort of lubricant is better than nothing but a good antisieze judiciously applied will have you smiling a year or 2 down the track or possibly sooner. works well on Harleys, Nortons and probably Triumphs too

I had a ball stuck in a chamber and I got it out without taking out the nipple. I just started a hole right in the top of the ball then threaded a long screw in until it bottomed out. Once the screw bottomed, as I turned farther the ball started walking up the screw threads until it came right out. It was a quick and easy fix.

What about using anti-seize on the nipple threads?

Could you explain what causes the notches in the cylinder to get little dents in them, and a drag line to form? I expect it's from the bolt coming up too soon or not fitting properly. (Just bought a Pietta 1851 Navy and can;t wait to shoot it, but I want to do this pre-shooting clean up first.)

you are correct..the timing is very precise..if the hand and bolt are not perfect..then usually a ding or dent will appear at the lead in for the stop notch..the ring around the cyl usually means the cyl stop is a tad too tall and is not dropping down far enough to make room for the cyl to rotate..if the top of the bolt where it contacts the cyl..is very carefully stoned down a tiny bit the ring around the cyl will not form...i hope this helps ya..safe journeys

Hi, I'm hoping you can give me some advice. I have a old revolver kit new in box, 1861 Colt Navy (CVA, Italy) that I've been putting together, but it seems the cylinder is a hair to big, when installed with wedge in place it's very tight up against frame, doesn't want to cycle and trigger won't cock properly, it seems the only recourse is to shave the cylinder a little, am I missing something, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

usually it is far easier to draw file the back of the barrel to provide clearance than to do the whole cyl..first the wedge does not have to be driven full down..that wedge is suppose to seat and leave room to go deeper to account for future wear.. assemble the cyl on the frame with the barrel on..with out putting the wedge in..see if the barrel fully seats at the bottom of the frame..now try the action..does the barrel slide away from the frame at the bottom?? if so draw file very slowly and carefullyat the rear of the barrel whenre the forcing cone meets the cyl..be sure to keep everything nice and square to the axis of bore and cyl..hope this helps..safe journeys

blackoracle69 Thanks for getting back with me so fast. Filing the cone end of the barrel makes absolute sense. As far as the barrel being put on the frame with the cylinder installed the bottom where the two pegs are don't mate up, at least a 1/16" from touching, I can press really hard to make them touch but this totally presses the cylinder against the frame causing it not to cycle or the trigger to cock, so I will surely file down the cone. Another question I have, when cocking the hammer is the cylinder suppose to have a small amount of movement forward? As I need to account for this when shaving the cone. I really appreciate your help, and I'm in the process of watching your videos, they've been great.

yes the hand will push the cyl a tiny bit forward..or it should turn freely is a better way to say it

Blackie, what size nipple/thread go in those originals? I am working on a Manhattan clone and wondering if they would take the same nipples. Cheers!

Another clue is the barrel ends a half-inch ahead of the loading lever catch. If the barrel were sticking out nearly a full inch ahead of the lever handle, you either have a Pietta 1861 (because they make their 1861 Navys with the ahistorical 8" barrel) or it's an 1860 Army. The 1861 Navy is supposed to have a 7.5" barrel (Uberti does this). The 1860 Army is a half-inch longer, which is noticeable because both models use the same length of loading lever.

I have removed all my nipples, at least once, I never have used a nipple wrench, just a knife, or a flat head, yes its painful as it sounds.,
