Pepperball TCP firing Grimburg JULs up to 36 Joules on metal target & 1.5-year reliability update

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Testing the Pepperball TCP with the Milsig heat-core o-ring (Grimburg version) tuned up for high power. In this video I'm using 8g Grimburg JULv2 projectiles and the Grimburg 5" bore-matched barrel to do some chronograph readings and destruction testing on a metal sheet. This combination results in up to 36 Joules in this test using 12g CO2 in a T8.1/9.1 magazine and all 8 shots are above 20 Joules. This video doesn't go into how many turns on the velocity setting because I use a chronograph and know from experience how to optimize the power setting to get the best compromise across the full magazine. With that said, it's getting close to a max setting. Other upgrades have also been made to improve reliability and power across all 8 shots. These topics will be the subject of later in-depth break down videos. Not everyone will want to push the marker to this level and I will try to guide you in your decision-making process.
The two most important aspects of using air pistols as less lethal weapons are power and reliability. These go hand-in-hand and one is not more important than the other. Here, I discuss my experience with the TCP over the past 1.5 years testing it at gradually increasing power settings. It has been a work horse with a lot of shots put through it during this time frame. Having durability over time is of critical importance and I give my thoughts on the TCP in this regard. This is only the beginning of a longer conversation so please comment on any questions you have that I can address in the future.
I am an end user and consumer like you. I don't upgrade or sell these launchers for profit. I will not do that in the future either. There are other KZread channels that specialize in that sole purpose and you should see those if you are a potential consumer. The overriding goal of the Less Lethal section of this channel is to provide as much information as I can that is free of conflicts of interest. You can then decide what is best for you and your self defense needs (and budget). I have a different point of view and opinions from many other Less Lethal channels. Stay tuned and subscribe for my input as I get more detailed in my discussions and work to sort out the hype from reality in the growing less lethal field.

    If it stops the bad guy it is a good thing , because a bullet ( 223 round) from AR15 has ( drum roll ) 1800 JULs and AK 47 2100 JULs ! It is scary .

    Absolutely agree. Use the minimum amount of force needed. Easier said than done though, but it’s worth investing in LL to cover the statistical majority of self defense situations.

    Yep, all about using the proper tool for the job. ARs and AKs look intimidating and sound great on paper for home defense, but shooting one in the house is a completely different matter. They are extremely loud and the risk of hitting an unintended target and doing lethal damage on them is much higher than a 'less lethal' tool. The purpose of AKs and ARs are to be multipurpose killing tools capable of killing people up to hundreds of feet out. That simply isn't needed for home defense. Also, I don't think a lot of people are prepared for the PTSD that would result from seeing someone's disfigured body leaving a pool of blood on your kitchen floor. "Lethal" has it's place, but I'm glad to see more less lethal options come out.

    Right on. 👍 That’s my goal, to teach the basics for beginners in a clear way. I’m not an expert either so I don’t readily assume that everyone can maintain a souped up marker properly without going through the learning curve. It’s a rite of passage if you’re going to rely on a less lethal for your protection.

    You can get one from Grimsburg if they have any in stock. Also if you do it yourself make sure you replace the stock O-rings as they will not be able to hold up under the increased power.

  • @ScaredyCatTactical

    @ScaredyCatTactical

    Жыл бұрын

    The Byrna vs. TCP/FSC is comparing apples and oranges, each comes with benefits and drawbacks. Yes, the TCP/FSC is quite a bit more powerful and can be carried in either a bag or holster but not concealed as well as the Byrna due to the bulkier size. I prefer a small carry bag but mine is not the best because it's over the shoulder and could be wrestled away. An around the waist runner's bag is probably the best to keep it close to the body. I don't carry my TCP much so I'm still working through when/how to do it. I do have some videos coming up on these types of practical aspects of EDC because I agree with you it's an important topic. Stay tuned!

    In addition to the Milsig heat core and Grimburg barrel upgrades, did you upgrade your air chamber with a ZRam steel version ? Did you upgrade (shim) the springs in the trigger/regulator mechanism (increase reliability, not power) ? Did you upgrade the power pin with ZRAM steel version ? Did you tune your pressure valve release ? Did you screw the speed adjustment screw to the max ?

  • @ScaredyCatTactical

    I did the regulator reliability mods (Less Lethal PSI Defence Channel) and the PRV delete (Daniel Sterling kit). I have the velocity adjusted about 1-2 turns from max. I did a few other smaller upgrades of o-rings and some shimming that I'll talk about later. Not really interested in the Z-RAM upgrades because I want to keep the TCP very compact.

    To be honest I don’t know exactly for these shots. When I lube the spring pad o-ring I count turns from flush and then rest it at that point when I am done. I think it was a good 10 turn in. My guess is that it is 1-2 away from max. I’ll be doing maintenance videos soon and I’ll be sure to determine it and discuss at that point. So stay tuned and subscribe for the latest updates.

    Do we know when the 8g JUL round becomes lethal? I'm looking at a gun that shoots 43 joules, it's fully built n tuned w/ springs and barrel and such. But I don't want something too powerful...

  • @ScaredyCatTactical

    @ScaredyCatTactical

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question. I hope your new launcher is backed by some type of warranty and I do suggest that all new users learn how to break it down for routine maintenance. In my opinion, 43 Joules is right in the sweet spot for a good less lethal range. Mid-30s to mid-50s is generally sufficient for unarmed attackers to buy time or induce a change of mind. I always recommend that less lethal power stay away from 55+ unless you don't have access to a firearm to escalate with. If this is your sole weapon against armed and unarmed then that's a very different consideration. With that said, headshots are potentially lethal in the 30 Joule range but nobody really knows so use those only as a last resort.

    Thank you for the video. Random question. Is it bad to leave a TCP magazine loaded all the time (will the springs go bad)?

  • @ScaredyCatTactical

    @ScaredyCatTactical

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not at all. The springs can stay compressed just as easily as they can stay elongated. Storage either way is fine. It’s the change from one state to the other repeatedly that reduces tension force gradually. But springs are really cheap so I don’t worry about it.

  • @ScaredyCatTactical

    Good questions. You can certainly use the FSC platform instead of the TCP. Check out my newer videos regarding some potential legal caveats that you should consider before that first purchase though. Everyone's jurisdiction and personal needs vary so I'm never absolute in my advice but I do put it out there to help potential buyers. The FSC platform is great, modular, and powerful but it has a downside. As far as breaking Pepperballs, it's looking like you can shoot them up to 25-30 Joules reasonably safely but I'm still concerned about the mag-fed system and breakages in the launcher. One break at the wrong time and you've made a bad situation much worse. I have successfully experimented with muzzle-loading the first round, check it out. kzread.info/dash/bejne/moOXvM-IZ9iberQ.html

    The key upgrades are almost all available from Grimburg Less Lethal and/or Sterling Self Defense. A must is to go to a 12g CO2 in the mag and both companies are producing them from stock 6-round mags. The T8.1/9.1 mag I'm using was discontinued but smaller lighter versions are better despite the lower capacity (2 less rounds) and everybody loves them. The 5" barrel was from Grimburg and the PRV delete kit (VKS bolt spring, VKS sear spring, plugged regulator spring pad) was from Sterling Self Defense. He also has the actual VKS spring pad now which is just solid brass. For the TCP, the Grimburg barrel is optional if you want a couple more Joules over stock. I mentioned o-rings in a previous video (Flasc paintball, BUNA-N; via Amazon) which I use and are slightly improved over stock o-rings in regard to durometer.

    Hi, please tell me why when I fire a shot, several balls leave

  • @ScaredyCatTactical

    @ScaredyCatTactical

    2 жыл бұрын

    There are a couple possibilities. First check your detents and make sure they are ok and not damaged. Next check that your projectiles are not too small for the barrel. If the barrel bore is too big then the detents might not be as effective when under air pressure. If these are not the issue, then the regulator may need an upgrade. Having double shots is relatively common from a stock FSC/TCP regulator because it's just not designed for the higher air pressures that we like to run. The PRV delete kit (Sterling Self Defense) worked pretty well for me in regard to this issue and it helps preserve air from the first high powered shots to give less decline in the later shots. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy shooting!
