Pep-talk For Your Creative Habit

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
With the new year coming up, there might be all kinds of plans and good resolutions, but I don't want to talk about that.
What I do want to focus on today, is creativity and taking the time for it.
I have developed the habit to draw daily. It makes me happy and that's enough motivation for me to make time for it. But I know that's not that easy for everyone.
You may have good intentions to draw every day, but you have to do the work. Make it happen. Take the responsibility, instead of blaming circumstances
Try finding your small gaps of time to keep the flow of creativity part of your life.
Even a five minute doodle is better than no drawing at all. Allow yourself to have that fun and feel better for it!
Go back to an old sketchbook and leaf through it. It can be encouraging to see how you've developed as an artist. You'll see how you've developed your skills, choice of subjects, storytelling and perhaps creative courage too. It's because you put the work in
Let go of perfection. Step out of that comfort zone and go for it. You need to follow new paths to learn and grow. It doesn't matter what the result is. You're drawing, and that what it's about. You need to make drawings with wonky perspectives to learn and do it a little bit better next time.
After all: what can really go wrong? Your life doesn’t depend on it. It’s just pen and paper.
Even a bad drawing is better than no drawing at all.
Do it! Drawing makes you happy, so don't skip it. Treat yourself to that time for you and your sketchbook!

Dear Koosje, I agree with you, and thank you. ANY little creative time, gets rid of "creative frustration". If you make it once a week on a Wednesday afternoon, great. 5 mins great. If it is every 2nd day, better. If you don't feel well, do some sick work.....creative sick work from bed! Today I made some ugly art, isn't that great! Did it make me feel much better? Yes. I figured out about how to use these lovely new Caran Dache Neo colours II a bit more. I pushed them hard. Work harder. Be free. Be ugly. The feeling of these new handful of crayons is sheer delight, buttery, yet stiff enough not to break, water soluble, layering with them, white over colours, some colours over other colours easier, some not so much. I made a good messy day. This is a lot for me, as while I have done art regularly since the age of 8 and now I am 48, I often like to be very clean, washing and looking after my brushes, every single time. So today, I put some cardboard under diary my work to protect my table, and made three planner diaries into lovely mossy greens. The transition from NYE 2021, to January 2022. If you want to be any sort of creative, and you are reading this, and you don't know how, here are the steps. Step 1. get some tools, play with them for 5 mins. Do not assess your own work, ever. Just feel the tools in your hands, how do they work? Step 2. Do it again. As Koosje reminds us, to attempt to do a bit more, regularly. After 40 years of art, you will still not love most of your work, but you will have touched so many kinds of art materials. Being creative with dinner or a cake making. It could be that you hear words at 2am in your mind, and you want to write them down as prose. You don't have to be a poet, but you can put two words together! The worst that could happen, is you may enjoy the process so much, you wiggle your feet that night in bed. Albeit , a wee bit happier. ;) In kindred spirit, I salute you fellow Dutchy! Happier, healthier, productive new year Slow, reflective, pondering, for yourself time Never alone Oh and enjoy your Oliebollen! Eliza Most Beautiful Day is Today! (PS my mum is a Van Den Hooven) Your new year plan? How could you (who are reading this) be creative for 5 mins? 31st of December 2021, 9:26pm NYE Dulwich Hill, Sydney Australia xx

I love to buy sketchbooks, imagining when I will draw in them, when I will “indulge myself”, when I will experience that personal happiness whilst doing it. Then life gets in the way and I forget how good it would be to feel all of these things. After listening to your words, I am inspired to start filling these books. I give myself “permission” to do this. Thank you.

Thank you for this pep talk, Koosje! My attitude as a beginner is not to worry too much about quality and focus on quantity! or rather, regularity, drawing or painting practically every day, even a little doodle on my lap while listening to a video. The wonkier the better!

Such sound advice. I have challenged myself to do some kind of art every day since the pandemic began. I cannot believe how much I have grown as an artist during this time. I have let go of perfectionism for one thing - started a brand new sketch book and managed to put a hole in the first page, hahaha! Well, there ya go - might as well fill it. Funny how all that pressure we put on ourselves dissipates when that first page gets some art onto it! Anyway, this year I challenged myself to work on things I find difficult - like crosshatching and oil pastels. Now they have become favourites, and my crosshatched illustrations are my primary way to de-stress. Line by line - just like one day at a time. We really need to be kind to ourselves during these difficult times - it’s amazing how taking just a few minutes a day for ourselves and our art can make such a difference. Thankyou Koosje for your encouragement and enthusiasm! 🥰

There is no likeness but hay, I’m sketching. I will try to do this each day, see how I go. Maybe come back to your video and sketch you again, compare my sketch to this one. 😊

I found your channel because I’ve been learning to draw from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I paint with Watercolor and would like to draw my own sketches rather than always tracing. It’s interesting how similar your pep talk is to some Watercolor artists I follow. I can highly recommend the book, Your Inner critic is a big Jerk.

All good stuff. One thing I've thought a lot about this year - I had collected a lot of material (for creative works) that I valued enough to not want to 'waste' it. Some of it I've had for up to 15-20 years. I wondered what would happen to it if I held onto it - unused/untouched - till my death. It all would (hopefully) be donated to a charity shop by my family and then someone else would buy it and perhaps hold onto it with the same fears I had. Fear is definitely present - all kinds of fears. You mentioned 'don't be afraid' but I think the first step is 'acknowledge your fear but don't let it stop you'. Feel the fear but do it anyway. Perhaps there will always be that fear - the stage fright - of stepping into the act of creation. But it doesn't have to stop you. And, over time, in my experience, the fear diminishes. So, I took those valued art materials and I started using them. It was a good year of creativity and in 2022 I'm looking to step past what I've done in 2020-21 and do the next thing - the thing I kept putting aside to do the easier, more comfortable things. This is the 2nd 'pep talk' toward that intention I've watched in the last two days. :-) Thanks for the encouragement.
