PEP Talk: Blood Clots and Compression

Doctors sometimes recommend compression stockings for people who have experienced - or are at increased risk of - a blood clot. Compression stockings extend to the calf or groin and help increase blood flow out of the lower extremities and back to the heart.
Dr. Suman Wasan, a Clinical Professor of Medicine, Adjunct Professor of Medicine, and Vascular Medicine Specialist at the University of North Carolina joins us for a conversation surrounding blood clots and compression. Learn when it is effective, when you should use it, and the different types. Not all compression methods are the same, and not all compression is recommended.

Thank you, Dr. Wasan. This presentation gave me answers that my current vascular surgeon couldn't or wouldn't answer for me. Because in his eyes, my PTS is considered "mild," I shouldn't worry about it and go live my life. Hard to do when there are days I have severe pain, swelling, aching and burning. I was one of the folks who asked about knee high v thigh high stockings because no doctor seems to be in agreement on which I should wear. This presentation answered that for me. And I liked the breakdown on prevention v treatment. Very helpful in understanding the difference. As well as the part about massage. I can't tell you how amazing it feels when I get a pedicure and I have the lady use the scrub and massage the crap out of my bad leg. That is my favorite part of the entire pedicure. I am a DVT and PE(s) survivor (June 2019), going on 4 years now. I have a one long clot remaining from mid-thigh to behind my knee, with PTS in my calf. Numerous scans show "good blood flow" getting by. So I am thankful for that. I want to thank Todd, Leslie and Dr. Wasan for this very informative presentation. I am so thankful I found this support group. It has helped me in more ways than I can count. Thank you, Denise Ward (Michigan)

The hospitalist doctor told me that my compression stockings I was wearing after I was diagnosed with 6 DVTs caused my pulmonary embolism! I actually laughed in his face as I am a physical therapist and knew that was not true. Really need to educate doctors on compression.
