    Are there any more other practical take aways , than I've summarized below? 1. Keep fats as low (in the healthy range) as possible to keep your bulk as lean as possible 2. If you happen to short-term overfeed, keep your fats low and do it with carb-based or protein-based foods so you store the extra calories as extra glycogen and burn it off through extra thermic effect ; 3. If you are a hardgainer, keep your fats in the moderate - high range on a bulk, to achieve the calorie surplus easier Honestly I don't see much of a practical application for this, other than the point no.2. I mentioned. You increase your surplus by increasing your carbs, you simply store more of your dietary fat that you eat? You will still gain weight, a surplus ir a surplus. The same thing if you change the ratio between your carbs and fats while keeping the calories the same on a surplus. It doesn't really change the big picture. Also while being on calorie deficit - it doesn't really mater, since you will lose weight regardless of the macro ratios, just because you consume less calories than you burn.

    It's really hard to believe that people are still confused by this. Lyle McDonald's book Rapid Fat Loss written 15 years ago goes in depth about metabolism of nutrients and fat gain and is very easy to understand. The tired old calories in/out still holds has never been proven false, yes even for you. Good vid Jason, thanks.

    Hey Jason, I supplement with fish oil every day and take four or five 1-gram softgels daily. Sometimes I split up the dosing throughout the day if I can (like 2 every 3 hours) but other times I forget to take them early enough and have to take them all at once before bed. Is it just as effective to take 4 or 5 grams of fish oil a day at once (in soft gel form) and 4 or 5 grams spread out evenly throughout the day or is there a difference?

    Interesting topic. I'm a total carboholic, and paying attention to my protein makes my diet naturally low in fat (if I manage to stay away from peanutbutter). Going into a moderate surplus, it will sometakes take a few weeks before I start gaining weight. But once it does, it goes up fast.

    Coach, what's your take on cardio while trying to put on muscle mass? Specifically, does regular cardio increase nutritient partitioning and allow for better gains? (Assuming that the cardio is lower intensity and that we replace the calories burned.)

    I took a genetic test some years ago on 23andme. I uploaded the raw genetic data to a 3rd party company that analyzed them and gave me a health report. One gene I had was linked with weight loss on high carb diet. Some years before this I tried a high carb diet, and I managed to stay lean. Even though I've been obese earlier in my life. I ate primarily oats with skimmed milk. Is it, or do you think it depend on genetics as well? I also have a "sprinter" body with mostly high twitch muscle fibers, and they do need carbs.

    That is probably nonsense as far as that gene goes. No it depends on calories.

    Not even close to that amount is required. That’s actually a pretty high fat diet. How much fat we need in a diet is rather ambiguous in the data and may be because total intake doesn't tell us much about EFAs which are really what we need. If you are supplementing omega 3s at a high enough dose dietary fat can probably drop extremely low without adverse issues but again we have minimal data on this.

    I thought when consuming simple sugars (say pure table sugar) that energy needs to be used immediately otherwise it gets stored as body fat? Is this incorrect?

  • @JasonBlaha

    @JasonBlaha

    3 жыл бұрын

    No it will primarily make you store dietary fat. Although in theory the fructose portion of it, in excess, will be stored as liver fat since table sugar is fast absorbing and the gut doesn't have time to covert the fructose to glucose to the degree that it does with fruit and your liver has to handle this role and you will get some spillover as fatty deposits in your liver if intake of it is high.
