    Another trash argument I’ve seen is the “if Lil Nas is allowed to express himself then so can DaBaby” which basically translates to “if Lil Nas is allowed to be gay then DaBaby is allowed to be homophobic” like do these people hear themselves?

Also, it seems obvious now of course, but it's sometimes easy to forget how relatively modern white supremacy ideology and homophobia really is. Lastly, so true about accountability vs consequences. This whole 'let's allow people to grow and learn, we always want to cancel and not teach' BS pisses me off. Most 'cancel' offenses are said/done with intentional negative connotations so at the very least they knew ENOUGH to connect concepts in a shady way. Also, no one has to support you after you've done something they deem unforgivable. Whether you knew the offensiveness is irrelevant, just take it as your privilege of ignorance. Once you're called out it's now the offenders job to learn the why and hope enough people (from said group) are kind enough to forgive. No one is expecting someone to know every potentially offensive thing in the world, but on the flip side, no one should be expecting those offended to be forgiving of every offensive thing as well. It's disrespectful/harmful for a reason.

I literally said that there are only consequences because this video got picked up by too many outlets to be ignored AND the offended party includes white people. Hence, the _entire section_ where I talked about disproportionate outrage/consequences, as well as the fact that I said (verbatim, more than once), that DuhBaby will be fine. He ain't "canceled." Once again, all of these things being true does *not* negate the fact that what he said was bigoted and absolutely deserves consequences. We can call out inequities when it comes to outrage, as well as performative outrage. And we can also hold bigots accountable for spreading hate speech and misinformation against groups, even if we don't identify as members of those groups.

    Great video sis! This gone be a rant. Sis you should have seen the number of people I had to read for supporting this heathen of a man and endorsing his bad behavior. People are actually upset because they are canceling his shows and dropping him for brand deals. I heard folks saying "why don't they leave him alone" This baffled me because black people need to take a page out of the LGBTQ's book when you say something against their community that not only impacts them, but causes harm they come together, gather the person, and all of them stop supporting that person. We can't even get our own people on the same page. This man should have been canceled when he took that young black boy's life, he should have been canceled when he hit that black woman in the face for taking a picture of him, Dababy and many other rappers should have been canceled when they rap about promoting the harm of othee black people and taking lives. Make it make sense! I was thinking about this, but in terms of cancel culture it can be broken down into 3 parts. They are as follows! 1) Accountability (Internal)- Whenever you hear someone saying things that are phobic, colorist, anti-black, etc. All of these things stems from a person internalized traumas and issues that they have not worked to resolve, unpack, or unlearn, which leads them to projecting these insecurities onto innocent people in horrific ways. 2) Accountability (External)- When Da baby made these comments alluding to HIV being synonmous with a person being gay and not understanding that these types of illnesses stems from a person being intimately irresponsible and not wrapping it up "what is also fascintaing is that he does not understand that people can be born with HIV and statistically people who have contracted this illness was not from them running the streets, but came from their partners having outside affairs and bringing it back to them with out their knowledge, but I digress after these comments people from the LGBTQ community held him accountable by not only stopping his bag, but also calling him out for his words and how they impact their community. 3) Cancel Culture- at face value does not exist because you really cannot cancel someone who is a millionaire or have access to substantial amounts of wealth, but I believe this notion is true to an extent because consumers have a lot more power than we think. If people actually stopped buying these folks music, watching their movies, stopped streaming thier music, stopped making videos about them, stopped viewing their content, etc. We could potentially get rid of them. The reason why cancel culture is difficult is because there will always be people that share the same values and perspectives of Da Baby and continue to support him. Another quick note, is that cancel culture exists only as it pertains to communities with actual power. Asian, LGBTQ, white, etc. Hold some form of authority because when you think about the entertainment industry there are so many powerful people such as activist, ceo's, cfo's, content creators, etc. Who are apart of the LGBTQ community so not only were they able to check him, but they were able to black ball him because the number of white artists I have seen getting checked for doing a song with him.

  • @nappyheadedjojoba

    @nappyheadedjojoba

    I was "yesss"-ing to this out loud so much. "Cancel culture" tends to be more of a thing that idiots complain about, rather than being anything that _actually exists_ because people can't keep themselves accountable to keeping public figures accountable. I "cancel" people/brands all the time, and it has everything to do with _not supporting_ them, and nothing to do with Twitter rants that get pushed down in everyone's feed in And, you are too right about how so many Black folks defending this man don't see how it is legit _the same thing_ when non-Black people don't stand up for us because they think (incorrectly) our oppression doesn't affect them. I had a whole half page of notes getting more into the issue of how much harm is caused by the -- again, INCORRECT -- idea that "gay = AIDS," but the video was getting long and I was losing light really quickly. Spreading these types of lies just so wildly reckless! My God!

The deep rooted hatred of LGBTQ+ peoples within the black community has always puzzled me, mainly because I assumed people who've experienced discrimination based on intrinsic characteristics would be necessarily empathetic towards other marginalized groups... When you were talking about queerness outdating homophobia, you made and excellent point about how even though the terms we use today may be new to us, people like the ones who identify with them have been around for a long time. It's a bit anachronistic to label 'queer' people of the past as queer, gay, bi, trans, non-binary, etc as many of those terms did not exist in the past. Instead they had other ways of reasoning and conceptualizing their identity. But nonetheless, we have always existed!

    Fun fact, I converted to Hinduism about 7 or 8 years ago. In the Devi Bhagavatam there is a story that talks about an androgynous deity named Ila. They are both male and female and switch between sexes and genders about every other month. The texts regarding this non binary deity predate even Monotheism let alone heteronormativity... I'll repeat that... trans gender people have existed since before the idea of monotheism... we exist, and we were here before your Jesus was born.

    I may not agree with homosexuality for myself personally; however, I have never treated anyone poorly because they are . It's funny how people have so much contempt towards individuals because of sexual preference, colour, etc. In high school I didn't have a problem hanging out with gay guys. One of the things I've been known to say to people " What makes people friends is that you have SOME THINGS IN COMMON NOT EVERYTHING." Even my mom, friends, family, classmates, etc. often thought I was a lesbian or bisexual. It never bothered me and a lot of times I didn't correct people just to see how they felt if I were. As for DaBaby, he needs to get educated. I worked in an ID (Infectious Disease) office. I have spoken to the young and mature, educated and less educated, woman, men, etc. I've been there when they learned that they were infected with HIV/AIDS as well as other STI/STDs. I've held them as they cried. I've spoken in barbershop, passed out literature & protection, spoke before our local HIV/AIDS organization, helped with activities at Ryan White and support World AIDS Day. Parents of former classmates would encourage them to speak with me because of their fears on it. I have never treated anyone with HIV/AIDS disrespectful or as if they are the disease or ask how they contracted it. IT'S NO ONE'S DAMN BUSINESS. Even as a teenager I had better sense than DaFool. I never treated my classmates who confided in me any different. I would hug them, sit with them and shake their hands. I'd tell them, "You were stupid yesterday, you're stupid today and 60 years from now you'll be stupid, bald and toothless. I'm going to be right next to you on my walker." I've seen my younger cousin receive this parting gift from her boyfriend. Because he waited to tell her on his deathbed it was to late for her to respond to treatment. A teacher and friend, her husband gave her AIDS. She asked him, "Why?" He said, "Because when I die I'll know you'll always be mine and no other man is going to want you." Like any disease it doesn't discriminate & someone better educate DaArse because he doesn't know what the future may hold for him or someone he loves.

    What bugs me about him apologizing to just the lgbt community reinforces the idea that only queer people contract HIV. Of course most of his comments were about gay men, but many people gay and straight live with HIV and its almost like they were kinda erased from the discourse

    I hate this comparison people are trying to make with him facing consequences and the consequences faced by those who do racist things. Some how this has turned into "look how quick they are to defend LGBT but not black people". First of all, that surprises you?? In THIS country?? Second, that's not the issue rn. Just because the bigot in question is a black man does not mean all the complexities of racism are involved with this situation. I can see if he was being honorable and was slighted but at the end of the day he said disrespectful and potentially dangerous things against a group of people. This is not the time to highlight that he is also a black man doing this.

    In all fairness, why can't individuals who DO NOT agree with LGBTQ+ identity/lifestyles express their disagreement as freely as the LGBTQ+ community is allowed to express themselves? Our alignment with or stance against either should be equally respected. Why does it seem as if - more and more - the only individuals "allowed" to express themselves are those who are aligned with the LGBTQ+ movement? Where is the equity in that?

    I'm in the UK, African Caribbean origin. Got rid of one idiot on social media, for his hate speech, about a gay olympian. Disappointed (but, sadly, not surprised...) by the number ofother black folk who didn't call him out. I'm straight, but I bet a good few people will be questioning my sexuality, because I spoke up. I totally agree that if you are more concerned with and offended by - in this guy's case - who someone is sleeping with, due to their sexuality - than you are by the continual oppression and harassment of black people, then I could care less about what you think of me, and I agree, wholeheartedly, that it is YOU that is anti-black. Dude was also bringing the bible, God and Freedom of Speech into his foolish ranting. I just said what I said, about his hypocrisy, and his offensivenrss to me, and unfriended. I'm not putting up with that kind of foolishness around me.

    "Freedom doesn't exist without safety" Wrong. The more Freedom the less "safety". The moment you allow your kids The freedom to go on their own they become less "safe" the moment you hand them car keys and they drive off. However those who trade Freedom to purchase safety lose both and deserve neither
