Many thanks for this straight up review of the K1. I love how you prefaced your talk by making it explicit that this is definitely not a "my-camera-beats-yours" review. That is so refreshing especially now that people --- especially politicians and photographers ---have become so tribal and polarized in their thinking. Call me an "independent" weekend shooter that uses Fuji, Pentax, and Lumix gear. No allegiance to any particular brand. But I must say that I totally agree with you that Pentax cameras shine in the departments of ergonomics, image quality, and backward compatibility of lenses. I just ordered online a K1 tonight. Am glad that I had stumbled into your channel which helped solidify my decision to get the K1. I am planning to get into astrophotography.

Hey that's great to hear and I appreciate your feedback! Definitely do not want anyone to feel like anything they currently have was a bad decision. Like anything else, you buy what works best for you and go from there. I agree, people do seem very polarized about their camera equipment. I am just not that "brand attached." What I am attached to is a great camera that does what I need it to and this is one of those cameras. I hope you enjoy your K1! I still love mine and even though it is a few years old, I don't get camera envy over newer gear because I am so happy with it.

Great video. Thanks. I been shooting with Pentax for about 10 years and love the results. My main gear is the K-1 and K-3 I have used the K-3 with the Sigma 18-35mm lens for astro and it's been great. Might have to get out with the K-1 and have a crack at astro with it. Have used it before for night work but that was sometime ago. You have inspired me to get off my ass and get out there at night again. Thank you.

Dear Tim, I finally came to find some time leaving you these words cause I had been watching your videos again and again and loving them more and more, but always too busy working in my school. (I'm a math and science teacher in Taiwan and having full schedule all week long). Still I need to say again that I had to let you know your videos were really fantastic for photographing learners and the way you described things, too. I seldom have time doing the outdoors shooting, especially at nights, but I look forward to doing this from middle of this year on for myself 's health and I actually bought a new K-1 ii on the end of 2021. It's been put in the corner for a whole year and I really felt so sorry for it. And it's until I watched your video that I realised the mark 1 was better than mark2 with the dynamic range, hahaha, but no bothers for a beginner like me. By the way, I travelled to Massachusetts and Connecticut twice and people there were all so kind and friendly to my wife and me and we had very sweet memories there. Thanks so much and we wish you all the best. Just let me know if you or your family will visit Taiwan at least a week before, and we treat you well here and show you around my beautiful country.

Gerald! Please accept my apologies for my delayed response. Thank you for all your kind words and for watching this channel. I am really happy that you have been enjoying the videos and finding them helpful. The K1 Mark II is a GREAT camera and right up there with the best of them. Sometimes people worry about the built in noise reductions but many people don't notice or even prefer it! To each their own! I still have my K1 Mark 1 and I still love it like the first day I got it. I would only upgrade if someday they came out with a Mark III (I don't think that will happen) but for now I know I will be using this for years to come. I hope in 2023 you can get more time out with your camera. I'm making videos again so keep an eye for more coming your way. Also, I am glad you had a good experience when visiting Connecticut and Massachusetts! If I make it your way someday, I will accept your gracious offer! If you ever come back to Massachusetts, let me know! Be well my friend, Tim

Great video. All "problems" with K-1ii compared to K-1 comes from using Lightroom. I stopped using that software few years ago due to all sort of reason. One is Pentax files does not look at it's best. Especially I had problems with RED colors (until created my own profiles using ColorChecker and DNG profiler). I also saw how K-1ii "eat details" is based on fact they used same generic profile for both cameras. If I developed 16-bit tiff from raw files using DCRAW, and than pixel peeping files, I could not prove details were missing at all. What accelerator does is something you astro-guys do all the time. Multiple exposure combined together to cancel some noise and get better defined image. This is also noise reduction of a kind. While image stacking takes multiple exposures and cancel noise, pixelshift does this inside camera, accelerator does this on a electronic level. It does not cancel noise from multiple exposures, but it cancels electronic noise by re-reading same data captured on sensor multiple times. So ISO 400 image will not benefit, since it is not enhanced image, but high ISO images are electronically enhanced (in all cameras) and anyone who know Canon would know how darn important is to nail exposure in camera, since any change in post will degrade image. Not with Sony sensors, but at high ISO there is still some electronic noise introduced even in Sony sensor. Another aspect with Pentax cameras vs Nikon D810. Processor of Nikon is like Big Block V8 compared to Honda 1.6 VTi in Pentax. Pentax HAD to choose quality over performance, whereas Nikon did not need. Pentax have much slower FPS and AF on same camera, but a noticeable edge in IQ. In limited time camera had to do a lot of work to process raw data into a file, beside to prepare to take another shot. So adding time to process better, reduce performance. How Nikon D750 improved image from SAME sensor type since D610? Beefier processor that can process image more in same time. Pentax had to let image be processing for longer, so slower FPS. Since they can't just change processor, they figured out to add co-procesor (just like in Intel 486 PC platform there was a co-processor option that later got combined with main CPU and "Pentium" was born - a CPU + co-processor baked into same chip, ever since), to pass some image processing task in paralel, so essentially speed thing up - or process raw data better. THIS IS NOT A NOISE REDUCTION baked in for heaven's sake, how we know it from POST-production side!! Post-production side noise reduction is "averaging"available data or "guessing" what data should be there, at best. Cameras does all sorts of "noise reduction" (e.g. processing) regardless of brand, type, system, age, ... to deliver that "raw" file (which is in fact 16-bit TIFF file wrapped into fancy proprietary container called "raw" + metadata. It's like your 100+ exposures of Milky-Way vs finished image. We all like finished image, but it is tons of processing until there. So EVERY camera does something to the raw signal from sensor, to represent it as "raw" image. Fuji uses same Sony Sensors as others but with different filter on it + different processing. So much complicated that Lightroom failed to match. Capture one took a year of fine tuning specifically for Fuji, to master that files. So K-1ii just offer better processing in the same time, than original K-1, which results on lower noise visible at certain ISO levels (higher ones). For low ISO shooters there is no difference at all since processing was good already in the 1st version. Up to ISO1600 there is probably no meaningful difference. There were reports that K-1ii have all sorts of magenta cast in shadows lifted ... if using Lightroom. All those people proved were differences how Lightroom handles those two version of cameras. No such problems in original files. I did not try astro, to compare, but for what I tested I could not prove "noise reduction baked in eats details" issue. If one pull original image from DNG/PEF file and open that (TIFF) in Lightroom, it bypasses how Lightroom wrecks the file. So accelerator is not noise reduction, but better processing which would had be done anyway if Pentax had more powerful processor at the time.

I just ordered a K-1 as my first FF camera. Had been looking at the Mk ii for the last three months and never even considered the original K-1; then I saw your video and a couple of other pieces on the baked in noise reduction. I don’t need handheld pixel-shift as just about everything I do is on a tripod, and I’ve been getting into astrophotography landscapes so this was music to my ears. Having stepped away from a Canon 60D and having to invest in a new ecosystem, this video saved me about £500 on second-hand pricing for the camera body alone, allowing me to afford a decent D FA 24-70 f/2.8 for essentially £75 more than I would have spent on the MkII body alone. Thanks so very much!!

Excellent vid! I'm a K-3 guy, my first DSLR a few years ago after a couple of Fujis such as the X10, and I'd love a K-1. You've clarified for me a lot of why it is that I DO want a K-1. Mind you, I'm extremely excited about the new K-3iii that is minutes from becoming available--not that I can afford either at the moment. So many innovations. The LCD lights. The lunar-lander tilty screen that might converse with R2... I'd had no idea the Markii had just maybe messed up minorly. One thing I don't like, for *any* night scene, is that the mundane foreground always becomes kind of 'dead' when juxtaposed to the starry VanGogh-ity of the heavens. Maybe one must find a cave from which to over-display said heavens, that will retain some mystery and un-mandaneness. Or a casing to go to the bottom of the ocean and photograph strange beings ... thanks for video.

"Lunar Lander Tilty!" haha I like that. I also had the Fuji X10. Great camera in its own right! I think the K1 is a joy to operate and I often get excited to take it out for a spin when time and conditions allow. I feel like it meets all of my expectations and more and it feels fairly future proof to me. Balancing foregrounds with astro skies is always a challenge. I see a lot of folks just shooting distant mountains or plain fields. I try to put something more interesting in the front. Good luck with your camera, whichever one you decide on!

What a great video. I have been a long time Pentax Shooter all the way from the basic ME. Currently doing astro with a K3 and a modified 500 rule. The results have been great. But the lure of FF and wider fields with the FF compared to APS-C have pushed me to upgrading. I have a huge collection of Pentax M and K series lenses to draw on. All of which naturally were designed for FF. Your comments on the K1 mark 2 were enlightening in relation to noise reduction artifacts. I had my heart set on the mark 2 but may now have to reconsider the original K1 and save a few dollars along the way. Many thanks for a great video and review. All I needed to know without loud music and cheesy introductory video. 10/10

Hey thanks for the comment! I appreciate it! Either K1 version will be great I am sure so if you can't track down a Mark 1, the Mark 2 would work and you may not find the noise reduction noticeable. You could even rent each of them and see if you notice a difference. As I said in the video, for me I noticed a little and just knowing it was there was something that stuck in my head. Others don't seem to care too much. And being able to use all those vintage lenses is a huge perk! Happy shooting!

@@CapeNightPhotography ..hey thanks for your reply. Even with exposures as short as 1.3 seconds I have only boosted ISO to 3200 at the max. Normally I stack 30+ light frames in Deep Sky Stacker or Affinity photo (nice stacking there, could be worth a video!). I do pump my K3 to ISO 512,000 just for checking my target is in view and suitably framed. But with star tracker I plan on using ISO 800 or lower for less noise and better colours. Generally I have not needed flats or bias frames with my short exposures. This may change with the much longer exposure times. I should point out that I only do astro images without the lovely foregrounds in your outstanding work. But now I might have to look for more scenic locations. Thanks for being inspirational and wise!

@@entropytango5348 Sounds like you've got a great system there! Yes, ISO 800 is about where I lurk when it comes to tracking. I am quite happy with how the K1 handles that level and the color that I get out of it. I have started doing some light deep sky shooting and thinking about grabbing a lens just for that purpose. The longest lens I currently have is a vintage 135 which has been good for landscape but I've been happier with the resolution and contrast on the 28-105 made by Pentax. Fantastic lens. I also picked up a Samyang 85mm for night portraits but have aimed it at the Milky Way on occasion and have been pleased - especially for the price.

K1 ISO max out at 204800 natively while A7SIII at half 102400 and the A7III is 51200... The k1II has even higher ISO, 800000 or so and this is natively.. Granted too high IS introduces more noises but with the pentax sensor design, it has very low noise and ranks very high by DXOMark.

I had a Canon 6D MKII at the time and its purple and green noise ruined every underexposed shot. I do a lot of astro but im struggling finding good astro lens with very round stars in the corners. Best lens ive found is the 15-30 F2.8 Pentax but I want longer focal lengths camera lenses.. I also have telescopes from 250mm-2800mm. Thanks for your comment! I've been shooting mostly with the 15-30 and have been quite pleased. I tend to shoot pretty wide so I haven't gotten into longer focal lengths but from what I've seen the 24-70 is a good choice followed by the 70-200...but optically the 15-30 seems to be the best of the trifecta regarding the concerns you mentioned. You may also went to check out the Sigma 85mm or the Pentax 85mm if you don't mind having a prime. I thought about having one of my K1 bodies converted but I don't think I would see much of a difference in the areas I usually shoot.

Great video. I am seriously considering buying a Pentax K-1. I am looking for information on how you calculate exposure using Astrotracer. It seems like the rule of 500 wouldn't apply. Astrotracer seems like a great feature, but (IMO) Pentax has done lousy job of documenting its use. Any insight will be MUCH appreciated. THANKS!

Hi Richard! You are 100% correct about the 500 rule not applying here. I have settled on about two minutes when I shoot at 15-20mm. Any longer and I start to notice some trailing in the corners. I'd say start there and see how it goes. It's a little trial and error but once you figure it out for your particular focal length, you can duplicate that in the future. It's just super important that you calibrate the astro trace at each location you shoot at to ensure maximum accuracy.

Hi Ragen! You could try out Star Stax which I believe is still free and pretty easy to use if you want to dabble in star trails. For compositing two images together (one for sky and one for ground) I still use Photoshop. It has a new Sky Replacement option that works VERY well and is easy to use. Check it out!

Great video, thx. I use a K1 II as my decision after 20 Years without photography. I havn't expierence with astro photography and with the astrotracer. My question is : with the bulb mode and the magic green button , do you can the aperture time to set up 20 minutes. Why do I need a remote control? Greetings from germany.

  • @CapeNightPhotography

    @CapeNightPhotography

    Жыл бұрын

Hi! You shouldn't need the remote in either circumstance. If you go longer than 20 minutes, you just push the green button to put it in regular bulb mode. Just make sure that in the menu (I think in C1) you change bulb mode to 2. This allows you to start and stop your bulb exposures by pressing the shutter button. If set to "1" you would need to hold the button down or attach a locked release to hold the shutter open. I only use a shutter release cable for doing star stacks sometimes. Enjoy your camera! You're going to love it I am sure.

Hey Kelly, I've looked into this and it seems to be baked into the RAW file with no option to turn that off. This is separate from the normal noise reduction function you normally find in the menu. You may not find that it is noticeable. Opinions seem to vary on that.

Where do you guys buy cheap used Pentax K-1 cameras? Have once seen an offer for 600€ (mint condition, shuttercont ~10 000) and unfortunately missed it. Often people say in their videos "got a really good offer" ... well, all I see everywhere (e-bay etc) that price for used K-1 is between 1000-1300€. Brand new Pentax K-1 mk2 costs here in shop 1500€ . Since I photohraph often at night, I would prefere the first version of the camera too, however the price has to be right (up to 800€). If it's not a big secret, where did you buy your used camera and how much did you pay?

Pentax K1mk2 user, and I use mine for street photography in NYC and elsewhere..So much for the MYTH/LIE about needing a baby camera to shoot strangers..MYTH TWO...Plenty of AF and manual glass, probably way back from 1903 BC..All the main focal lengths are covered...Oh yeah, you probably cannot be a whiny, crybaby, weak wimp to haul this baby around,or it will leave you crying...ALL functions are right there and easy to find, even on the menu.I understand a few reviewers were so slow and mentally challenged, they could not figure out and master a camera menu.I know how Sony feels i guess because being the best at what you do,like Pentax does, comes with certain criticisms, yet Pentax dumbs it down for even them.NO OVERHEATING,so No EASYBAKE OVEN ,,NO recalls, like from the RECALL KINGS..NO WACKY AF..no need for 46 firmware updates...How does it work at night????Had it for 2 + years,,and still havent used a flash..

I agree with all of that. It's got some of the best dynamic range capabilities I've seen and it is very forgiving if you under expose something. So much better than my old 6D was (too much color banding during recoveries.) The first time I had a chance to play around with the K1 I was amazed at the menu layout in terms of its simplicity. I like not having to go 12 levels deep into a menu item to dig out a function I need. Thanks for your comment!

Great video, however you do have one thing wrong. The K-1 mk 1 does have motion control for Pixelshift images (it was added via a firmware update). The K-1 mk ii has that as well as hand held Pixelshift capability. The Astrotracer can track the stars for up to 5 minutes (lens dependant). I love my K-1 mk 1, and like you was not happy with the built in noise reduction for RAW files. Shooting both side by side, I didn't see any difference, but the thought of it rubbed me the wrong way.

Thanks Craig! I should have said it had been improved. You are 100% correct. Yeah, I feel the same way about the noise reduction. If someone handed me a K1 MKII, I wouldn't scoff at it at all. Fantastic camera. But it does stick in my brain about those raw files. I've settled on 2 -2.5 minutes on astro for my 15-30mm as that's when I start to see some trailing in the corners (which I crop out). This feature is absolutely something I don't think I can live without now.

@@haenzelv6287 I hesitate to as there must be some bad luck involved as Pentax does have quality weather sealing l have no doubt. Anyway I was shooting some surfers amongst about a hundred other photographer's & we were hit with a rogue wave, no real big deal all got a bit wet but the water got in the rear screen of the K70 making it no longer usable for viewing yet others there did not even have weather sealing but had no issues anyway replaced it with KP which l loved was so compact anyway the wind blew my tripod over & Kp landed in wet sand not water but sand was damp, picked it up immediately cleaned it off but it never worked again. My Z6 has been hit full on by a rogue wave 10 times worse than the K70 just rinsed with clean water & been caught in torrential rain many times & though l should take more care l just don't have to worry about it. I say this not to bash Pentax but buyers need to know both sides to a product as they were 2 different models & both failed with Ricoh telling me they not worth the repair cost.

I suspected that the way I dropped it and how mine landed was likely going to be an issue for any camera body. That said, it still shoots, just a little soft to the far left due to a misaligned lens mount. Fixable but left me uncertain as to what might happen later down the road as a result of the drop. Amen for photography insurance. I will likely just use it as a back up unit once I get everything realigned. Glad you're liking your new Z6! Looks like a fantastic camera.

Ricoh has done some very stupid changes from K5 to K1. While K1 is a much more capable camera, in some aspects, it has gone backward. And now, with this upgrade of K1! Instead of making some improvements, they have made it a worse camera. And worst of all, many K1 users delivered their cameras, paid some 500 dollars, that Ricoh downgrade their camera to M-K II!
