Pentax K-1 Hands-On Field Test (with Nick Devlin)

Ғылым және технология

It's been over a long wait for the first full frame Pentax camera, but it's finally arrived in the form of the new 36 megapixel K-1 DSLR. The K-1 looks great for the price, but can it win over a medium format shooter? We brought in Nick Devlin to find out.

For all the slagging of the award winning cinematographer, Jordan you absolutely rocked this video. Fantastic camera work! BTW on the focus point moving comlaint... no biggie. Pentax lets you change that. To enable: 1. Mount a lens and press Menu. 2. Go to Custom 3 menu 3. select ''Change AF point button options' 4. Select 'Type 2' for "Press AF point change button to set the desired shooting settings marked on 4-way controller" Now your 4-way controller will by default move the focus point around. easy :)

I'm a Canon user for twenty years but I'd move to Pentax without question for the K-1. The doubts I had about lens availability seem unfounded, and I'm sure third-party lens manufacturers will be issuing a lot more if this camera becomes even half as popular as expected. Cheaper than quite a number of aps-c cameras, at that price point it has to be one of the best deals in photography today. Thanks TCSTV.

I actually just jumped from Nikon to this K1. I had a D300 and had been using it for years, and when the thought of full frame came up I was just going to get the D750 and call it done. Then I heard about this camera and it all changed. what really won me over (among other things) was the grip and the in body stabilization. as far as the grip and the body design goes, it just has some sort of Zen to it. it feels like a well designed machine with character where as the Nikon feels (note: feels not is) uninspired and lifeless. I don't know how else to describe it. and that in body stabilization is a godsend. I have been able to get usable shots at 1 full second. not tack sharp, but completely usable. this massive buffer zone will help me keep the ISO down at times when I would have to ramp it up on other cameras and that alone is worth its weight in gold. absolutely love this camera and glad I bought it.

Hmm, your arguments read a bit like an audiophile review... you might as well say the pictures have more fullness to them or whatever impossible to measure quality :) But your case seems a good one to go this Pentax, not heavily invested in a system system, wanting to replace an older aps-c with full frame would mean buying new lenses anyway. And you end up with an underdog camera with a lot of options to play around with legacy systems from the film days.

+mipmipmipmipmip I really don't know how else to describe it though. there is something to be said as to how a camera feels in your hands. how it s ergonomics are set up and how it just fits a person. it's completely subjective, but damn does the ergonomics really work well for this camera. and you hit the nail on the head. I wasn't super invested in Nikon, and would have to buy a bunch of new lenses anyways. so this happened to give me a lot more bang for the buck.

Hi! Does the Pentax K-1 camera suffer from a transition to Magenta in color rendering? And if so, how do you fight Magenta? Magenta is very clearly visible on some objects: brown in reality the earth, brown in reality the wool - in the photo with Pentax K-1 get purple. How do you deal with this? And Yes, I also own a Nikon D300 camera:) And I saw the Pentax K-1 camera, too. But I was confused by the obvious Magenta in some of the pictures.

I've waited patiently for TCSTV review of the K-1, but it was worth the wait. Most convincing were the photos you two guys took, these speak volumes, not least because I too enjoy landscape photography. I have always found TCSTV reviews to be insightful and appreciative about Pentax cameras, but at the same time completely impartial - this is no exception. Thanks for putting this together guys - the K-1 is now on my shopping list. Loved the pre review warning, but it seems to me that Pentaxians are only upset when reviews are not sufficiently well informed or exacting. You did good research and criticisms were justified as indeed was the general positive tenor of the review which I found informative and helpful. Well done guys!

I just switched from Pentax k5iis to Sony A7ii 6 months ago. I really miss that brand and feel so excited about the new K1. The camera body is no doubt extraordinary but I think Pentax still has a long way to go on releasing more modern ff lenses. I'm looking forward to the new ultra-wide * lens from geniune Pentax design, instead of the tamron 15-30 f2.8. And I'll definitely to switch back to Pentax once their modern ff lenses line up is complete.

You can't compare DRTV to this channel or to Northrup's channel (or other channels like photouniverse which i love). It's a different thing.. DRTV is fun, strange stuff, weird comparisons, .. they are guys that make a channel for guys.. but they are so original that an amateur can get inspired, or can take the photo "issue" like a game, and not like a work.. (and i'm sorry for all these pro and great photographers, but it is what photography should be). It's like compare Mission Impossible with.. i don't know.. a Hitchcock film. My opinion, obviously..

I really enjoyed this video. Okay...I'm jumping ship and diving in! I was a Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji and Leica guy. I had multiple systems and invested on equipment for almost 25 years. I was searching to expand the shooting envelope in each systems and I think Pentax answered it with this camera...finally!!! I held and tried it with the 77mm f/1.8 for almost half an hour at Photocon LA this past May. I was shooting at ISO 100 at f/3.5 and 1/8th of a second. Holy $hit!!! I was blown how sharp the image, detail and microcontrast. I almost scooped up Nikon's D810 but the K1's technology, capabilities and price are significantly untouchable. This camera is legit!!! Can't wait to get mine!!!

Thoroughly enjoyable review! Thanks, guys. EDit: it's 2021 and I've had the K-1 for 4 years. As a landscape and macro camera it's still hard to beat. It's great in the studio for portraits too, especially with the 77 mm Limited, though it has a tendency to sometimes focus on something other than the subject's eye. The new 85 mm f1.4 is much better in this respect, and is a tad sharper, but when the 77 nails it... oh baby! I am now awaiting delivery of the K-3 III, but the K-1 will not be consigned to the cupboard. It's still that good.

zeebazu I didn't say there were few complaints. I said there were few negative reviews. There is a difference, because you can always come up with some complaints for products that in every other way are well-regarded. For example, the A7rII is often called the best mirrorless camera on the market. But you can also complain about its user interface. Yet that doesn't make its overall review a bad one.

zeebazu All I'm disagreeing with you about is that you said that this disclaimer is really necessary for Sony reviews. And I was disputing that...and you really didn't disagree with me at all. This camera looks to be a fine camera, and in fact, in another comment in this same video, I said as much. Now, if you want to see a video where the disclaimer is warranted, then look up The Camera Store TV's "Pentax K-01" review.

What's the best adventure camera between this and the Nikon d810? I really love the Pentax but want to buy the better camera for my style.

Looks great. I started with a K1000 screw mount and am glad Pentax is still innovating.

The disclaimer alone should help earn this video a few thousand likes. Also, Fire Wire skewers? Way to splash out with the freebies, Ricoh. (Full disclosure: I thought the skewers required a Firewire connection to work.)

Hello...great review! Do these cameras have a crop mode you can transfer over to in order to bump up the frames per second? I like to shoot sports as well so it would be nice to use this as a portrait and sports camera.

Cheers for the tip about enabling the histogram in image review Chris, that's genius. Works just the same on my K-01 (which is a beast of a camera if you've got vintage Pentax glass). :-)

I was a Nikon user, chose the pentax k3 when it came out in 2014. Best decision ever. I was shooting a Nikon D7000 prior, and it just didn't "feel" right - the ergonomics were all off. The pentax k-3 however felt so good in the hand. It was like an extension of my body. It was inexpensive compared to its competitor's comparable cameras, had no anti-aliasing filter, produced great images, was sturdy and rugged (and weather sealed), and had a great choice of lenses. I decided to go with the 70-200 f/2.8 sigma and a sigma art lens. My brother shoots professionally with a d810 and he was surprised at how great the Pentax felt. Definately go with Pentax if you want reliable, inexpensive, and good images. I would suggest waiting a few months to buy any newly released Pentax bodies, as the prices usually drop quickly within 6-10 months.

Thank you for another great review and video. The thing is I get used to an electronic viewfinder. I can not go back from the Sony’s. I love using ‘zebras’ on landscape photography. It seems to be a great camera but I think the Sony A7Rii is best for my kind of photography. Thank you guys and cheers from Portugal.

thank you for this review. the k1 looks incredible. it goes underwater!! the focus point selection would be a problem for me; is it faster/easier than sony a7rii? what is the focal flange distance? is it possible to use canon or nikon lenses on the k1? what about using vintage smc super takumar m42 lenses? is there a crop mode that allow use of more lenses? the k1 is clearly an amazing camera.

Thanks for the wonderful review, loved it! It's definitely an honest one, like all your other reviews. There are so few surprises with a Pentax: excellent (still) image quality, solid build and handling was guaranteed even before its release and (unfortunately) so probably was the sucky continuous shooting and video capabilities. Pentax has always managed to bring out the best in any sensor (the legendary K5) and this is no exception. And so, perhaps the fact that it performs 0.5-1 stop better than the D810 was not a surprise either. Add to that the excellent in-built image stabilization, we have a beast in a FF camera and esp. at this price point. Unfortunately, as much as I'd love to, I'm not able to invest in one right now. I'm happy with my K-3 at the moment. Will perhaps wait for another 6-12 months and hope for the price to come down (as has been the case with most Pentax flagships in the past). BTW, nice humour in the initial disclaimer! --- A happy Zentaxian.
