Scott is a baritone with a 4 octave range. He also does falsetto, and takes the bass part when Matt (or Avi) is singing. Avi was with the group from the beginning in 2011, and left in 2017. (He has a wonderful solo career) Matt Sallee is "the new guy". There is no way to adequately describe what Pentatonix does to a song. I have decided to use "pentafy". Once a song is pentafied, it becomes pentastic.

I've seen it put like this: The Simon and Garfunkel version is a warning. The Disturbed version is angry at the people ignored the warning. The Pentatonix version is about hope that the message may still be heard.

So the bass with the beanie and beard has left the group as of 2017 and now has a solo career. His name is Avi Kaplan and his voice is magical. He wasn’t doing well with the crazy touring schedule and everything. If you watch his solo stuff you’ll see that his vibe is a lot more chill now. Which is phenomenal for him. Matt Salle is the “new” bass who has officially been with the group since 2018. He has a beautiful voice. His bass is different and yet still works perfectly with Pentatonix. His vibe works soooo well with the group. Mitch Grassi has the mesmerizing voice, Scott Hoying is the baritone and Kirstie is the soprano. Kevin is the insanely talented beat boxer, with a shockingly beautiful tenor voice (he shows it off occasionally) and he is a world class cellist who can cello box, aka beat box and play the cello simultaneously.

No, just 5 in the group, Avi, the bass left in 2017, and Matt took his place. It's been long enough now he's not the new guy anymore. But we still call him the new guy, and probably will for the next 20 years until someone else is replaced. Then that person becomes the new guy, and Matt is relieved of that title. Hopefully it will be that long before someone else needs replaced.

This song has an example of the Pentatonix "wall of sound" during the final chorus. It's basically everyone who is singing belting their hearts out, making it seem like there must be more than just 5 people performing. You also heard the wall of sound in Hallelujah, at the end while they were doing what I call "the Hallelujah choruses". A couple of other songs with examples are Imagine (cover of John Lennon's iconic song) and Amazing Grace (the (probably) familiar song often sung in church or at funerals). Imagine has some amazing visuals and also lets you hear Kevin's (the beatboxer) amazing falsetto, and Amazing Grace has both Kevin's falsetto and you REALLY get to hear just how powerful a singer Kirstin is during the last portion of her solo.

That voice you love belongs to Mitch Grassi. His voice is always stellar, we all stop (well I do) no matter what is going on and just focus on Mitch. Mitch is truly amazing what he can do with those vocal cords!!! In older videos, before Avi left I also was drawn to Avi. I think a lot of Pentaholics miss Avi, Matt is doing really great job filling the bass 'spot' left by Avi.

As already mentioned, "The Prayer" is an excellent choice to hear Mitch at his most angelic. If you want to hear more of Matt, catch "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" - Matt has a totally delightful not-so-evil grin, and this song is a good one to hear Scott doing the bass harmonies. If you want more of Avi (and I'm not sure what you've already watched so there may be some overlap), try "Hallelujah," "Imagine," "Bohemian Rhapsody." Actually, come to think of it, *regardless* of whether you're looking for videos with Avi, watch those three. They're iconic. But check out the originals first. Leonard Cohen wrote and performed "Hallelujah"; John Lennon wrote and performed "Imagine"; and "Bohemian Rhapsody" was by Queen. Also, check out "Prayers For This World" from their new Christmas album, _Holidays Around the World._

In this video, from left to right: * Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable. Matt is the new bass, who took over after Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable, Kaplan left in 2017, due to illness in his family. We all miss Avi, but Matt is a wonderful singer who is quickly becoming spectacular. As you can hear, his range extends from the bass well up into the baritone. * Kirsten (AKA Kirstie - rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado. Kirsten is supposedly a mezzo soprano, but her actual range extends well down into the alto and upwards just as high as Mitch can go. * Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. His voice extends downward well into the bass range and upward into the tenor range. * Mitch Grassi, counter tenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves (not counting his whistle notes) and his voice has been described as "a once in a generation voice." It's also frequently called "angelic." Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men called it one of the prettiest voices he'd ever heard. * Kevin Olusola (the "s" is pronounced like an "sh"), beatboxer extraordinaire. Also a cellist, saxophonist, graduate of Yale pre-med, and speaker of five languages, including Mandarin. Kevin has a beautiful tenor voice with a gorgeous falsetto on top of it. He has developed a technique for beatboxing *while* playing the cello that he calls "celloboxing." Not to put too fine a point on it, Kevin is a genius.

Hello Valhalla, The first singer is Scott Hoying - he has a wide range and will cover the bass backing when the bass is singing. The second singer is Mitch Grassi - the voice of an angel, smooth as caramel, clear as a bell, clean as a whistle, the voice of a generation, a supreme counter tenor with immense vocal skill. Here he is using a lower register and he can climb the octaves right into the stratosphere. The third singer is Matt Sallee the bass that joined in 2017/18 and he replaced Avi Kaplan who left amicably after six years. The fourth singer is Kirstie Maldonado the soprano with a sharp belting voice. The fifth member is the beat boxer is Kevin Olusola a master beat boxer, you see him stopping, slapping, clapping and doing vocal percussion. This performance has amazing harmonies and the PTX signature wall of sound. Please react to The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Imagine, Can You Feel The Love Tonight and Come Along to get some variety and to see them all perform. BTW PTX just got nominated for Grammy #4 this week for their 2021 Christmas Album Evergreen. You have about 250 more songs to go in the PTX collection.

If I were going to describe the different interpretations of "Sound of Silence," I would say the original by Simon & Garfunkel was a lament, Disturbed took that lament to a dark and ominous place, and Pentatonix has brought it closer to the original, but with more emotion, making it a fervent plea for change. I wouldn't call it happy, though the arrangement is certainly beautiful. You noticed that Avi is missing in this line-up. He left Pentatonix in 2017, and has since grown a solid solo career. As an "imaginary Viking," you will most certainly enjoy his original "Change on the Rise," and "All is Well" (7 Layers Sessions version).

Don’t feel bad for not realizing Scott could sing that low after just two reactions…I had been listening to PTX for a few years and Scott stopped me dead cold in my tracks the first time I heard them sing this! As far as your preference of artists…it’s just that, a preference. There is no right or wrong…you didn’t hurt my feelings! I have heard it said that the Simon & Garfunkel version(the original, Paul Simon wrote it when he was 21) is a warning…Disturbed, its happed and they’re angry…PTX, is hopeful…as good of an explanation as any, I guess….

I remember being confused the first time I watched hallelujah because ei couldn't figure out who the bass was. I thought it was avi, but there was bass when he sang. I assumed Kevin was backup bass until I heard him sing in amazing grace and realized he was NOT a bass... Then I saw this one and it suddenly made sense. I like listening multiple times and trying to listen for what each person is doing throughout the song. Parts of bohemian rhapsody are still bugging me. I think avi may be singing and doing wind at the same time. I feel like I hear 6 sounds....

You are missing something ~ Beard & beanie guy, Avi Kaplan, has an incredible solo career! Please react to his powerful "Change on the Rise", or his beautiful "Avi Kaplan, All Is Well, 7 Layers Session # 126", He is amazing! I still love Pentatonix and enjoyed this reaction.

I think of Simon & Garfunkel's version as the prophets telling us about the hard times to come. Disturbed is telling us about the hard times while they are happening. Pentatonix is telling us about the hard times that they have gone through and survived. They each tell the story from a slightly different place. S&G are part of my youth, so I still have a bit of preference for that one. But I have come to appreciate all three as great interpretations of this song.

You should check out Home Free and their version of Ring of Fire. I think you'll really like it. They are a country version of Pentatonix. And also check out Voice Play, they also do a capella with covers and medleys. Can't go wrong with anything from those three groups.

Highly recommend The Evolution of Music (its what made them popular on KZread), AHA (just an overall amazing sound), and their start on The Sing-Off cuz you see how far they've come from there. Also would love to see your reaction to Panic at the Disco with Brendons vocal range.

Scott (1st singer) has a 6 octave range...dudes amazing. Mitch(2nd singer) also has a 6 octave voice. Kirstin the 4th singer has a you guessed 6 octave range, Matt Sallee (3rd singer) has a 4.5 octave range. Kevin Olusola (beat boxer also has a 5 octave range. There has only been 1 change in the group and that is the bass Matt Sallee, took over for Avi Kaplan in 2017. Just those 5.kirstie and Mitch are chameleons and change their appearance A_LOT. I feel the 1st version (Simon and Garfunckle) was the rising of alarm, PTX is the Warning, Disturbed It is the bell tolling It Is Here! Love all the versions.

I think comparing ptx vs disturbed versions are like comparing apples and oranges. Disturbed is angry and gritty and powerful, ptx is technical, beautiful in a terrible way, brilliant and dramatic. I don’t think you have to choose between them. I wouldn’t describe the ptx version as happy, tho. But you do you.

You don't have to understand the technical aspects of music to know how it makes you feel. And you did a fantastic job of describing that! Others have already explained the transition of bass singers, from Avi to Matt. Most of us love them both dearly, for different reasons. I also love TheStarkster's description of the 3 versions of this song and I agree 💯. Thanks for another great reaction, cheers!

I love your reactions. No need to apologize for liking what you like! If anyone, even us Pentaholics, give you grief for that, then just tell us to pound sand/stuff it/go away. You be you. I still love Simon & Garfunkel's version, but this is a close second. I think Disturbed's performance is fabulous, but I just don't enjoy the darkness (unless I'm in a dark place, then bring it on). I believe you said you like Johnny Cash, so as a previous commenter mentioned, you might like Ring of Fire by Home Free (featuring Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix) as an introduction to another a cappella (from Italian: in chapel style - performance of a polyphonic (multipart) musical work by unaccompanied voices) group. In addition to a number of original songs, Pentatonix covers artists of various styles, including rock (like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody), rap (Can't Hold Us), theater (Can You Feel the Love Tonight?), tons of Christmas songs (Mary Did You Know? is my favorite), plus pop, dubstep, electro, reggae, hip hop, classical music, and more. Lots of folks love their 90s Dance Medley and their "Evolution of..." performances (like the Evolution of Michael Jackson).

I have to say that Hallelujah, Sound of Silence and Bohemian Rhapsody were not even in my like version, until Pentatonix. They've sang it so unbelievable that they converted me. They do not do covers, they enhance them. As far as Sound of Silence by Disturbed, I actually didn't like it at all, as I found him terribly angry and Simon & Garfunkel irritated me for some unknown reason. Bohemian Rhapsody to me was too broken up with different segments whereas with PTX, I understood the song more (of course reading comments helped me understand the song). They are amazing, is all I can say. You should watch their latest 'The Prayer' originally sang by a fellow Canadian Celine Dion with Italian Andrea Bocelli. It will leave you speechless. Get ready to be Mitch slapped again. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaKq3Nl6gNTUmbg.html
