@@YBPlaysMusic it’s also possible that Matt’s voice was double tracked in this song. They do that occasionally, though Scott covers the bass line very well in live performances. Also regarding those higher-pitched single notes you didn’t have a name for, we called “bell tones” when I sang in church and high school choirs about a hundred years ago.

I think one of the best compliments you can give any vocal group is not being able to pick out parts when they sing together. It is a mark of real musicianship. We are always taught to listen to everyone else singing around you and not focus on your own voice. Pentatonix simply prove this with every song they release. Magic and music together! ❤️

Kudos, young man, I enjoy your reactions very much! I do search for them on purpose, actually. PTX are contagious, aren't they. If you want to enjoy Scott's bass than the SOUND OF SILENCE would be the right one. In fact, we hear Scott sings the bass in almost every song; whenever a bass singer (/first Avi and now Matt) has his own solo, Scott is the one who takes over the bass. In Sound of Silence, however, he is the first who “hits” the bass from the start. And if you'd like to hear Kevin's falsetto, you must listening to AMAZING GRACE (also enjoying everybody's tremendous talent there). By now you reacted to the songs where Matt is the bass. He is awesome no doubt; but it would be also interesitng watching your reaction to the songs where Avi was still with them. Basso profondo. Crazy! Anyway, Matt brought the new sound and bright energy into the group. And try HALLELUJAH (double reaction would be nice to watch - official and live version), IMAGINE, HAVANA ... and DAFT PUNK MEDLEY, BOHEMIAN RAPSODY and LITTLE DRUMMER BOY (they were so young back then) are "the must"! And of course DANCE OF THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY - no words, instruments only - just their voices. OMG, there are tones of PTX songs to listen to. Well, hope you will. Cheers from sunny Slovenia!

I think the lowest I've heard Mitch's lead vocal was probably Take On Me, but I'm going off memory there. He has such a huge vocal range, but because he's so well known for his higher vocals I think his silky smooth low end can often get overlooked and people are surprised at just how low he can go. So with that said, it's possible some of those low harmonies had his voice in the mix too, but it's often hard to be sure unless you get to watch them singing it live with a good wide view allowing you to see what everyone is doing. I know others have pointed out about Kevin being a tenor, I don't actually know how low his singing range is, but he can do a kind of pseudo bass using what I assume are beat boxing related techniques (he doesn't use it here as it sounds more "electronic", I'd say), he uses it in their original Love Again. I don't think he uses it much actually because he's said it's painful to do, so not really sustainable it's more for like a short blast.

I see folks have already let you know that Tears for Fears (TfF) originated the song, in 1982. Their version is fast and poppy, but has the same brilliant lyrics. Where Gary Jules comes in is that he and Michael Andrews completely rearranged the song in 2001 for the soundtrack of _Donnie Darko._ This is where the slow, haunting melody originates. So in a way you are correct, this is a cover of Gary's (and Michael's) *arrangement.* Take a listen to the TfF original. I didn't like it the first time I heard it, but I've grown to appreciate it a bit more since then. I still greatly prefer the _Donnie Darko_ arrangement, though.⬅ Regarding the shadow/ghostly imagery in the background, my guess is that it is a callback to the movie. It had themes of multiple realities and was intentionally "off" in subtle ways (and sometimes not so subtle). In that context seeing the Pentatonix folks with perhaps their own separate realities is quite fitting.

You do great reactions. I suspect I must be early, because you should have about two orders of magnitude more subscribers than you do. The production value of your videos is well beyond most reactors that I've seen. You even do the same depth of field cinematography yourself that you called out in the PTX video (perhaps Dries had something to do with that)? Anyway, keep it up.

Thank you so much Allan for the kind words! So glad you appreciate the quality of my videos! Haha, well, we both have been making videos over the last couple of years but Dries does it professionally, I just do it as a hobby. But you're right, since the beginning we've been influencing each other about this. To give you some info regarding this (should you be interested haha), Dries actually started as a photographer, whilst I made simple videos back in the day, so gradually, while I was learning more about videography, Dries also got interested in videography and I learned about photography through him. And you are in fact right, he was the first one that told me about depth of field (in pictures though but for video it's practically the same thing :p ) ;)

It is very unusual but all of the members have at least 5 octive ranges, if not more. All 4 men can do some bass notes, yes even Mitch and he still go so high you have to look again. Kerstin has an equally amazing range but I have not seen anything below low alto from her, but would not be surprised if she could.

Just subscribed for your Pentatonix reactions! Looking forward to seeing what else is here. If you want to hear Mitch sing low, listen to "Take On Me" (no video, only audio). He goes from lower than I can hit, to higher than I can comfortably hit, and I have a pretty wide range as a second soprano (nothing compared to his, though)!

Hi domn1c, I can understand your frustration with pauzes, but I have to pauze the video sometimes for copyright issues, otherwise, the video might be blocked (which makes it unwatchable). This has happened to a couple of my videos already as well. What makes it annoying, is that there's no specific explanation on when exactly a video gets blocked or not, because of this, it is different for every video. That's why I try to lower the chance of this happening by pausing sometimes. So, some reactions might get away with pausing less, but we just can't know exactly how often we should pause or not. I do appreciate you took the time to give your comment, I can always try to improve towards future videos, so thank you!

And then, "Less is more" also fits in the sense that the less pauzes I do, the more chance there is for the video getting blocked. But like I said, there's no definitive length of time that's described for this...
