The original was by Cosmo Sheldrake and used in an Apple I Phone commercial ( I believe). It does evoke rather trippy Vibes and does mention Heffalumps which are from Winnie the Pooh. Fun song 🥰

There are also references to Jabberwocky from Through the Looking Glass, and Homer's Odyssey that I've picked up - probably more that I'm just not familiar with.

@@Badger77722 You got the rest of it. Heffalumps from Winnie the Pooh. Borogroves and Slithy Toves from Jabberwocky, Lewis Carroll. Reference to the Odyssey journey from Homer when Odysseus had to make it past Scylla and Charybdis, the Siren and the Whirlpool Monster, on his way home. Not sure about the armbands part but Odysseus had his crew put wax in their ears so they couldn't hear the temptation of the Siren but he had to be able to listen to the boat and wind etc. to give orders how to steer around the whirlpool, so he got tied to the mast of his own ship and gave orders to the crew while being tied up so he couldn't jump overboard and kill himself trying to make it to Scylla. That's all the direct mythology/lore references in the song.

If you listened to this song without the video there's no way you would guess that it is acapella. Kevin's percussion is stellar, and Matt's base is on point. It has such a fun and upbeat vibe. Very different than the original version.

It's just a fun song, and you can tell they're having fun doing it.

The best intro to this group is to watch their Sing-Off episodes. They won the third (2011) season, and haven’t stopped since. To see three teenagers, just out of high school, recruit and team up with two talented, perfect strangers and create the magic that is Pentatonix in a few short weeks is astounding. 12 episodes…a must watch!

After having watched this video many times, I'm amazed how different it felt just seeing it in mirror image. It felt as though the spatial relationships and interactions between the members were completely changed and made me see things I'd missed before. Note to self: How to refresh a well-known video - reverse it. The music however was just as it always was and who'd need to refresh that?

The original song by singer/songwriter Cosmo Sheldrake is much slower tempo, and also only has a single singer (Cosmo), so it's a very different vibe, for me. It's on KZread. But Cosmo is a classy person - he wrote a comment on PTX's version, thanking them for covering his song! Mitch has said in an interview that he has no idea what the song is about, but it's a lot of fun to sing!

I always wish with this one people listened to the original first. They made it faster and proper which i think goes well with the lyrics. I wouldn't have listened to the original more than once but I love this version.

Mitch has said they have no idea what its about, but its so much fun to perform. There is a live stream from 2021 where they perform this and its so good. I will be seeing them in concert in Sept and Im so excited to go. They also in the livestream do Happy now from the original album The Lucky Ones and that is such a good album every single song is great! And all originals. Hi Marissa, I'm seeing them in August & like you I'm so excited!! I saw that 2021 video & I think it's so cute how Mitch introduces the song saying he has no idea what it means but it's so much fun to sing! Lol! As a Winnie the Pooh fan, I was tickled that Sheldrake mentions heffalumps! HaHa!! I agree he needs to do the songs from The Lucky Ones and the Popspring Performance!!!

The Cosmo Sheldrake original is quite different. Slower, but just as quirky. You should check it out…for an interesting comparison. Then google him, his life story best explains his song writing. Another fun one that leaves me with Tim Burton vibes is, “Making Christmas”! And no, don’t wait until Xmas! Their exceptional talent and skill really shines musically and creatively. These people belong on stage. Someone needs to write them their own stage/screen musical!

This is one of my favorite Pentatonix videos. Thank you for reacting to it. Happy that you liked it. The song is catchy and who wouldn't want to run away from the humdrum and Come Along with them to a place safe from greed, anger and boredom, then dance and sing until sundown and feast with abandon...? It sounds pretty good to me. I love it. This video was released March 22, 2019. Matt has been their bass since October 14, 2017.

Well it makes references to Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass, & another I think from Peter Pan. Plus it talks about going to an island where all they will do is play all day with friends, the only caution is to not listen when the Sirens sing...Don't know if the song means "Let's go on vaca & pretend we have no responsibilities for a while" or if it means to literally run away to a place like Neverland where no one ages because time doesn't pass there. 🤔

Great reaction. I heard this song in an Apple commercial. The one with all the people dressed in body suits of different colors...... Maybe that was inspiration for the Set Design..... But PTX version was much more upbeat than original song. Kind of "bouncy"..... ha ha. Thanks for you videos . They are very enjoyable.

It always reminds me a modern version of the Fairy Rings in stories. In legends, fairies lure both children and artists to join the circle, to come away with them where there will be no cares or worries (think Neverland) and while I love it (I'm a sucker for anything that uses mythology and fantasy - I've been a strolling actor and Ren Faires and the like😊 - so it's kinda in the job description) it is also, if you put it in that focus? Gets a tad creepy because it's all about luring you away.

It is definitely worth watching the original, not for the music, although it's not bad, but it's a single man that is playing all the strange instruments you could ever imagine, and some you couldn't. Look for Cosmo Sheldrake on YT.

I saw another Avi fan mention once that this video came out the same day as the Change On the Rise video. It's so mind blowing thinking of Avi in this video if he hadn't gone on his own path. I love both videos/songs.

The original version has a darker, more malevolent sound. This is much more uptempo, and I love the sort of skipping, shuffling rhythm that PTX added to it. How about another one of their original songs? Try A Little Space ft Ateez, if you haven't already. 🌞

I'm enjoying your reactions - I'll subscribe for more. A couple of my faves are Gold (a Mitch lead) and Say Something (a Kirstin lead), also New Rules X Are you That Somebody with a great start with Matt & Kevin and choose one of their medleys - Michael Jackson or History of Music are a couple that are amazing - they are just the best at perfectly transitioning between songs. I'd never heard this song until they did it either; it sounds super nonsensical, kind of Tim Burton-ish to me. :) If you'd like to branch out a bit, Mitch and Scott formed a side group for a couple years called Superfruit. Their voices are so amazing together and they have several medleys that are just stellar. I love The Promise. And they had a vlog for quite a while that has some hilarious episodes; they're both pretty funny. Their music and definitely their vlog can be a little more adult - a very different vibe from PTX stuff but still perfect. Oh yeah - you might try Popspring - it's a professionally done video of a live performance - three of their originals and the MJ medley. It's a longer video so some reactors split it up, but most Pentaholics will watch the whole thing with you.
