Freddie once said he was okay with anyone doing his music, “just don’t make it boring, darling!” So, I think he would have approved. No one who sings this will ever capture Freddie’s full emotions since this song was personal for him. PTX covered this as an homage and treated it with the utmost respect. They spent years waiting to record it until they were sure they could pay it their full respect. The video not only pays homage to Queen with nods to the original video, the Sheer Heart attack album cover, and Dr. May’s astrophysics degree…but they are paying homage to their own journey; from shooting one-take videos on a couch in their apartments, to traveling the world as a multi-platinum, Grammy winning supergroup. But, in the end, they’re still those kids from the “couch videos”. Brian May shared the link to this video on his social media with a simple, “Enjoy!” One thing about PTX…they perform this live. They do the entire thing, including the operatic bridge, live…which even the Great Freddie Mercury and Queen could not do.

Your beatboxer dude is Kevin Olusola. He is arguably the most musically talented in this group of amazing musicians. He played Carnegie Hall when he was a teenager...twice. Once on Sax and once on Cello. He then went to Yale where he studied to become a doctor. While at Yale he played Cello in the YSO orchestra before taking a year abroad in China. While in China he became fluent in Mandarin. At some point he also came in runner up in a Yo-Yo Ma competition, with Yo-Yo ma commenting on Kevin's incredible ability. Anyway, if you are curious what a single person can do, musically, check out his KOver of "Down". It's a roller coaster of amazing skill.

I love the way you define all the little meanings of the video itself. By-the-way Pentatonix love Queen and was doing more of a tribute to them not trying to take them on. They have an amazing story and I hope you continue down the Pentatonix rabbit hole😊

I saw another reaction this today. Referring to the original, he said something like "This is not an emotional song so I don't know why it's hitting me so hard...". My reaction would have been WTF but I only got as far as the "Wha...". Then I stared at the screen for a while.

Brian May said 'Freddie would be proud'. 'Simple' is one of the words you used 😆 but they did this video in a street they had closed down on a motorized couch! PTX didn't take on this video on a whim, it took months bc of the respect they had for Queen, so it had to be perfect. Loved your reaction and commentary bruh.

I'm a Queen and Pentatonix fan and when I first heard this I agree that I was missing some emotional content from Mitch's singing. But you do need to acknowledge that they paid enough respect to Freddie to know that it would take multiple singers to cover all the sections. And Mitch does have his own demons. He was a gay man with a high voice going through middle school and high school in suburban Texas, and had to play "masc Mitch" most of the time. This was relatively early in PTX's career, but you should hear Mitch now on some of his recent solo songs. I'd like to hear a more recent version of this to see if he is better able now to access those emotions.

Yes, a guitar solo. Megaphone was only a prop. Mitch, the counter tenor does this live without megaphone with just his voice. Sounds the same. You've just gotten started with PTX, keep going. They're amazing. PTX doesn't necessarily copy an original, they always pay homage to the original but still make it their own. Hope you continue to react to them.

The whole video is symbolic. The couch because when they first started out it was just them sitting on a couch singing. The moving of the couch symbolizes them moving forward in their career. The stars toward the end is a nod to Brian May being an astrophysicist.

Pentatonix wisely chose not to replicate the full pain of Freddy's version. Instead they - and Mitch in particular - took an ironic tone. Later when the group came together they gave a joyous interpretation of their take on reality vs fantasy.

Kevin's snare is the one that always melts my brain. He's absurd. And while Mitch may not have *quite* the intensity Freddie had, he's damn close enough that you just can't be mad about it. And check out a live version of you really want Mitch's guitar solo to really break you.

No yelling! They took years to decide to do this because they wanted to do it justice. The first time they sang it was in the Evolution of Music video. They paid homage in several ways. Mitch wore things in Freddie’s honor. Glad you enjoyed their version as well!

I think your assessment is fair. I know they spent years working on this song to ensure they created a worthy tribute to Freddie and Queen, but no one could ever replicate Queen. I think PTX shows respect to the songs they cover while putting their own twist on them. Generally I like the PTX versions better, but not always. That is probably my favorite aspect of music, it can be different things to different people. Thanks for your reaction and the very… entertaining story. The foam worked.

I sympathize with your hearing the drums. I used to play tympani and when I go to the symphony I am focused on the tympanist. BTW, I thought the sound quality, both your comments and the video, was great. As for the position on the couch, it reminds me the cover of Queen's Sheer Heart Attack album.

"Vocal sandwich"! Very good...never heard that analogy before. Since everything PTX does is very deliberate, I'm sure they decided not to try to be Freddie while still keeping the song intact. I think that if any member of the group doesn't get as many deserved accolades from the comments it is Scott. Kevin, Avi, and Mitch get the most comments as a rule, from what I've seen.

Mitch (the lead in this one) actually has the highest male voice type in opera terms! (counter-tenor) also that megaphone he uses is just a prop, she does that guitar solo live with just her voice, and it sounds brilliant! i recommend checking out “Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy” from them, they won a grammy for it despite it having no words! super impressive stuff

You're right about the full emotion because that was Freddie's baby. I love Queen (have all my life) My cat's name is Freddie. Lol. That being said, Pentatonix does a fantastic job of paying homage to Queen and every other cover I've heard them do. They do an amazing job on IMAGINE, by the way. I agree. I actually avoided listening to this song for the longest time because I didn’t want to be disappointed. When I finally broke down, I went into listening already half-cringed, ready to be let down. By the end I was practically giving them a standing O in my living room. It’s a brilliant homage.

You almost lost me early on, but then you did your stuff. I can tell you’re an incredibly intelligent man. The way you articulate, comments, self deprecating, knowledge, etc. I enjoyed your honest take on this song. I think you’re correct that the same emotion from Freddie is not there. But wouldn’t it be awful for someone to come along and replace that in your mind?! This song was about what it was supposed to be - great, but on its own… and Freddie would be happy with Pentatonix. 😊

I absolutely agree with you about black licorice being disgusting. Doesn’t everyone have a big tub of red vines? Isn’t it a requirement. In regards to the emotion I completely understand where your coming from. Im 62 and have been through things. Everyone has, but at 62 I’ve had more time to go through more shit. It definitely gives me a different perspective of things. I realize that the likely hood of you even reading the comments I’ve been posting is slim. I’m not even sure if they’ll tie into the video you showed. Anyway…you know how they say “Dance like no one is watching” well I decided to “comment like no one is reading” 🤭 one more thing…the movies…BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY was more realistic.& ROCKETMAN was a musical. Really hard to compare. But I did prefer BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY.

Sorry, but I did not like the song when Queen sang it. I listened to PTX and have listened to it multiple times since I've first heard it and now I love it. PTX don't do covers, they enhance them. The drums and guitar solo (megaphone is a prop and not need on stage) are fantastic and nothing is pre-recorded. They do tribute to Freddie and Brian May but they do their own thing enhance that song.
